some of you might not care but, i found this a little scary and i feel i should pass this article along, it sure will make me stop and think a little before i weld on something i just cleaned..

Definitely good info for the DIY guys. I think most shops that read the MSDS quit using the chlorinated brake cleaners a long time ago. It -may- even have been outlawed in California. I know I've never seen it at my current job(14 years) and I remember switching away from it several years earlier at my previous job.

Chlorinated solvents are extremely dangerous, phosgene gas is what the Nazi's used in WWII as a nerve agent. FWIW, R22, R12, R500 and several other refrigerants are chlorinated and pose the same dangers.
The best solvent there is for cleaning metal before welding and so on is denatured alcohol, it is not as effective and takes longer, but burns clean and cold and does not flash.
Never use acetone, it literally explodes when it flashes, also, when welding gas or diesel tanks, be really really careful. Use nitrogen (dry) or argon to displace any fumes, and do it outside.

i have been thinking about this for a while, i am wondering how much damage i have done to myself internally that i don't know about? i have never got hurt like this guy did, but i think it would be safe to say i am going to eventually get some kind of cancer from doing things like this.

True story but we used to requisition a can of freon (12) to "chill the choke" on the cars back in the day in an attempt to duplicate "cold start" conditions :screwy: later found out " freon passing thru the combustion process cause phosgene :banghead:

Yep I know, I know.... when I was a kid in the late 60's living in the orchard country we would play in the sheds where they stored the sacks of chemicals for the spray rigs. The chemicals?? DDT baby! It's got a very unique smell. We didn't know DDT from ABC we were kids. We'd dare each other to eat the stuff. And we would hide out in there for hours or make a fort out of the shack.
