Title: Call me crazy...
Post by: ka0tyk on March 22, 2013, 06:14:47 PM
picking up a "new" boat tomorrow... cruiser with nothing but a floor and some gas tanks.   Hopefully I can get an interior built and upholstered before summer!  Otherwise I'll be stuck on the rollbar boat.

haha tomorrow morning im pulling the motor out of mine and building a dolly for it to sit outside and the new'er boat is going into the garage on the trailer.  i bought some beefy caster wheels for it.  if anyone wants a 78 tahiti with interior, tanks, pump, and no motor it'll be for sale.

Welcome to the Bahner Club!

thanks!  any tips/tricks/pix you have would be greatly appreciated.

ever since i saw this one ive wanted one.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk189/Ry2000lavey/Picture002.jpg (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk189/Ry2000lavey/Picture002.jpg)

got this one for $150 out the door.   >:D  its dirty, the floor needs to be replaced it had been sitting bow down for about a year.  wouldnt matter anyways i wouldve replaced the floor regardless.  full stringer, there isnt a single scratch or scrape on the thing.  rubrail is in great shape, the bottom is spotless, the strakes have no chips and a kinda cool touch is the gel stripes and yellow extend underneath with a little pinstripe.  the transom is rotten but thats not very hard to replace along with the floor. ill have my grandma make me a teak swimstep (she has a full woodshop and she makes AMAZING furniture, a swimstep would be cake for her).  engine will be covered, but ill make the scoop stick out of the top facing backwards.  2 buckets with a bench across the back.  and if time/money permits i might make it an open bow... but that might be on the list for next season.  for now its floor, interior, motor, drive, boating.  done!

ive heard horror stories about mr bahner... one thread said he was wanted by a tough crowd and he was found dead on the side of the road or something.  before that was prison time, etc.

trailer is a little short.  ill move it forward and add a swing tongue to stretch it out a bit.  in the pic its sitting about 2' off the back.

You going with quicksilver forward controls or foot pedal and shifter for forward/reverse? You will not like it without power steering... You getting just a bravo unit or the whole kit and kabootle from someone's part-out with the hydraulics and pump for trim?

I sometimes miss the lever throttle I had in my old tuna boat, like cruise control when you have to get up and open the cooler.

And no, you will not be ready this season.

getting the whole kit from a part out boat. ive heard i can keep my current steering but ive been seeing like a hydraulic assist steering setup.  how hard is it to steer while under way without power?

as far as controls i was thinking about something like this:

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cpperformance.com%2Fimages%2FProduct%2Flarge%2F124-SC3002.jpg&hash=7f591845eb3bb8a174a19fc48400d6d3e3c521c4)

im keeping my eyes open on the offshore boat forums for one.

WTF???  I would assume you know that this boat doesn't run a jet drive and an I/O without power steering just don't make sense.  Looks like a good amount of work and $$$ before she floats so get a move on, summer is knocking at your door.

I had a 3.0L inline 4 Chevy and Mercruiser's entry level drive. Depending on trim and side to side balance in the boat, it would rip the wheel from your hand one way or another (enough to make passengers scream) if you didn't pay attention or have a good grip.

Back then, the power steering was probably an option for my 4 banger, likely mandatory on all 4.3 V6 motors.

I wouldn't want to hang onto a bravo with a healthy big block unless I had a really big pirate ship style steering wheel.

More like open the treasure chest and start buying things.. Good investment though.

I remember the day at lake Perris almost 10 years ago when I let a buddy's girlfriend drive it and I sat in the bow... It was a very sobering moment because my back ended up skipping on the water and almost sucked me out of the boat, and I became aware that it IS possible to spin a boat with an outdrive. Though I told her to use the kung fu grip, she failed. I never did let anyone else drive the boat after that.

Outdrives need power steering, It's like putting an airplane motor and prop on the end of a cat's tail, all of your engines power is converted to thrust implied 2' behind your (rotten) transom and inches below your keel's path.

first boat that'll have an engine hatch... where does your blower hose go to?  down in the bottom of the bilge? do the gas fumes go to the bottom or the top?  im guessing that most bilge blowers are gas fume friendly?

Blower intake hose rests on the bottom of the hull, perpendicular. Gas fumes will always sink to the bottom. Always run the blower while getting ready to launch. Most boats with a closed engine compartment have ventilation on the cap, one side scooping in, the other side angled to release. Mine doesn't so I run the sheet out of the blower when in doubt. I run the blower when fueling on the water or extended no wake idling.

If your looking for parts, hit me up. I have drives (late generation) Bravo ones, engine brackets, power steering pumps, hoses, water pumps, exhaust manifolds, ignition sets, I can get transom assemblies.

Be careful with lumpy camshafts with an i/o, they're difficult to shift.

I probably have enough crap to build that boat twice.

Just got rid of a Blackhawk set up.

Also just so you know, transom thickness is critical on these.

Nice find.

how thick should the transom be?  I'm seeing the original at 2" where the wood is still good.  its built up towards the center, im thinking of just doing it 2" all the way across.

it would be great if you could put me together something, bravo or alpha complete with trim pump, etc.  im waiting on the reply from the setup i was looking at to discuss shipping right now, havent paid yet.  would rather help out a board member.  O0

i think it has to do with the way the steering bracket is on the transom assembly.  i dunno.  the mother in laws mastercraft is right hand drive too.  weird.

The transom cannot be less than 2"or greater than 2 1/4" for the drive shaft yoke to fit on the torque properly.

I will try to put together a list for you this evening. Diggin' holes right now....  >:(

You can have the steering on either side on a stern drive.
