hey guys, I really havn't reported any results yet because I have still not had a good run. I have been messing with just about everything else on the boat to kill time because i've been waiting for a buddy to come over and help me figure out why the hell it was mis-firing when I got over 3000 RPM's. In the mean time I pulled the motor and built a what I call a "water dam" between the stringers, we used 3/5 kiln dried plywood and glassed it in. I also polished the front and rear bell housing and repainted the motor and dooshed the bilge all up. Then we put the motor back in last weekend because my buddy was ready to look at it yesterday so we had to have it ready.
Now for the details....so I was at the end of my knowledge as why it was mis-firing when i got it over 3 grand...i had my guesses but I wanted a buddy to come over and help me out, this guy is far more knowledgable than me. So we got it all hooked up on the hose and started messing with it, after some deliberation, and messing with timing it just didn't make sense. So we popped the dizzy cap off and found out that wack ass retro fitted pertronics unit was installed like crap. The rotor it self had enough play in it on the dizzy shaft to cause me to have about 10 to 15 degrees of slop in it. (these figures are according to my buddy) but it made perfect sense to me, this is why i couldn't time the thing for the life of me, of if I could get it timed it was ok at idle and low RPM's but when I would romp it it it would mis-fire.
So we decide I can get a new rotor assembly and try to put the cap back on and the brackets that hold on the cap break, we all just lauged at this point and said, ok well time for a new dizzy. I know I could find the parts to get this one back up and running but it's gotta be 30 yrs old and it looks like shit.
So I am in the market for a dizzy, I am gonna pick on up this week and then go do a final test at Elsenore on Saturday. Other than that my buddy did a compression test and she has about 125 PSI on all cyl's and appearst to be ok, at least for this summer I'm sure it will get me thru.
So let me get back to you guys on Sunday night with an update post. As well as some new pics of my progress.
