I have a 2007 Silverado LTZ 5.3 w/ Flex (never have run E85) and it takes awhile for it to start. i crank it over for a good 20-30 seconds then it finally struggles to start...then starts. once its started, it runs fine.
also, i have noticed that my avg mpg has gone from 16 to 12 since this started about 2-3 weeks ago.
There is a check engine light. I went to autozone and had them do their free code check, an it came back with "no codes" :screwy:
when it started doing this, its been every time...not just once n awhile. its every time i try to start it since the first time it did it to me.
any suggestions as to what it can be?

Actually I'm really sorry cuz I know you ain't gonna get much help from the dealer. I have lived your future and it ain't pretty.

i would agree with you.....but it was black and white when this shit started. not like it gradually became a problem.

You definately have an electrical gremlin in that truck! Could be a possibility of a lot of things....I'm beginning to think fuel pump....gm fuel pump's tend to go out around 100k on them trucks....also the fuel filter is probably ready for service! Now question? You started having this issue when swapping to e85? Or are you still running 87? Your mileage going down is a solid indicator of the fuel filter and possibly the fuel pump....maybe tomorrow we can take a look at it, and I can get a real scanner on that thing and run some diagnostic tests!

Brad is the fuel pump making a humming noise?My buddy kind of had the same problem but his truck is not a flex.If the fuel pump is humming it might need to be replaced.you should be able to here it while running by the fuel tank.

thats what i was thinking.
i have an electric and a mechanical fuel pump in my boat. The electrical can be toggled on and off via toggle switch. if its not on, it takes a few cranks to get it running. if it on...it fires right up.
i know my truck in the past has "hummed" as soon as the ignition turns on....havent noticed if it still does it or not.....gunna go check right now.

I just emailed the old man about this. We had exactly the same thing on his old Van with a 4.3 Vortec a few years ago, and I'm struggling to remember the whole week long ordeal.
While I was back there, I was voted to figure it out.
Immediately thought injectors, but that wasn't it. (Bigger problem in the northeast in the winter, beleive me, fugger would drag the battery down but QUICK).
As I recall there was an electronic valve, I'm still searching the internet for what it is/was, that was in the rear of the intake manifold that I changed out. Still wasn't the problem, but in doing this we found a wiring problem with that valves harness and plug. Cut the wires and crimped in some new Molex connectors, That fixed it then.
Did the same thing a few months later, and as already pointed out, was the in tank fuel pump.

i check the fuse...its good.

BINGO! and they're only good for about 75K miles, guess where the fuel filter is? Yep, attached to the pump, also only good to about 75K. Have fun with that, it requires dropping the tank, I did mine on my 99 Silverado, and I'll never do another one!

Yep, pump is in tank. Not too hard to change out. Bout 2 hours.

disconnect battery, empty out tank as much as possible then put floor jack or strong buddy and start undoing the strap bolts. lower it slowly until you can reach the connectors, disconnect elec wiring and fuel lines lower it rest of the way. Undo retaining ring and carefully pull out pump. swap out pump and re-install. PITA, but not too bad.

Could well be. Take it to the dealer and see bro. All they can tell you is yes or no. If yes, you're golden, if no, well, yeah look at Sam's post as to how to do it. Really not to bad to do. When I did it it was like 5 degress outside and I was doing it in the old mans driveway.
The pump/sender/etc etc is all one deal that comes out together. It's all held in place pretty much the same as a garbage disposal is in the kitchen sink in your house. Use a brass rod and a hammer to unlock the ring though, don't want no sparks........ >:D

sorta funny my filter was on the frame rail! on my 2000...i had a 5.3 truck, but not that body style, wonder how many changes they have made? im guessing because of the e85 it made the pump more expensive! also there are two ways to do the fuel pump and believe it or not option #2 is alot easier just takes a little help...
option one drop the tank, and then pull the pump
option two take the bed off! walah it's right there!

actually this stuff works ok....there is this stuff that you can buy that you can actually tie into the fuel rail there's a provision there kinda like charging you ac system....anyway you get a can that attatches to the fuel rail, and that's what really cleans the injectors...also the MAF "mass air flow" sensor could probably use a good cleaning!
like i said there's ways to look at stuff going on in your motor just gotta make sure the motis is up to date, and we can scan it, and that thing will tell you more about your vehicle then you want to know!

You're loosing residual fuel pressure or failing to get cold start enrichment/throttle angle commanded by the PCM. When you shut the thing off, fuel pressure should stay in the injector manifolds/lines from the pump so that you don't have to prime it next time you start the truck. It sounds like it's bleeding off ifor the ECT isn't reading correctly.
You need to get a scan tool on it and check if the engine coolant temp sensor is reading correctly when the engine is cold and you are having the starting problem.
You should have a shraeder valve somewhere on the injector manifold...in the morning before you start the truck, press the pin and see if there is any fuel pressure...if not, you've got a bad check valve in the pump or a leaking regulator or injector.
If it's a leaking injector...the easiest backyard way to probably figure this out is to crank it for about 10 seconds or so and then stop and pull all the plugs....the wet plug is in the hole with the leaky injector.
If it's under ex. warranty, bring it in to the dealer and let them deal with it. That's what warranties are for.

I got a $0 deductable up to 70k....I'm @ 66k. ...take it in tomorrow morning to get it fixed.
Also there's a recall on my windshield washer fluid heater (never used the dumb thing) ...they take it out and chevy sends me 100 bucks...sweet!

failed fuel pump was the culprit.
as far as the electrical issue...they ran a battery test and it failed. said it was low on the amps. it was only 18 months old and was put in there by the dealer...no warrenty :mad: ...so i had them put in a new one...$150...but it has a 100% replacement 5 year warranty.
up next - tires.

Your lucky you caught it before it completly went out. I had a 99 1500 and my fuel pump went out on wash road at glamis at 8:30 on a sunday night driving home.. it made for a lonnnnggg ass ride home with Felipe the truck driver...

Damn dealer they always screw you on the battery deal.Make sure you hold onto the receipt and the warranty info.If you dont have any of that stuff when the battery goes out again they will screw you again.I have two of those in my truck and that happend to me $480 later :banghead:

Vegas heat KILLS batteries. Been through 3 of them in 3 years. All Nissan Batteries, ALL under Warranty!
As far as tires, watch craigslist. Just picked up 4 brand new 18" Continental takeoffs for my Titan on the stock steel rims for $120. Had a tire place swap the tires onto my rims, $52 mounted and balanced. $172 for a full set, beats $180 for each tire plus M&B.
I see takes off all the time for Silverados for $200-$600 Complete.
