Aug. 15, 1971: Sonny DiMarco of Sun Valley goes airborne when his boat disintegrates in a finish-line crash at the National Drag Boat Assn. races at Long Beach Marine Stadium.

DiMarco escaped with only minor injuries. In a separate accident, Gary Cornwall of Reno suffered a broken leg.

Larry Hill of Fresno, drove his boat, Mr. Ed, to a new speed record of 202.46 mph in front of a crowd of 15,800 fans.

Wow, I could very well have been there that day. My Ole mans boat was very near the stadium and I used to cruise the dingy all over that place. I got the dingy hauled off by the shore patrol at those races. They said it was adrift, i had pulled it all the way up on the beach...who knows.
