Starting to look for a Jet Project

After spending the 4th in Blythe, ive decided i want a Jet. But i want a project that i need to "build" from the bottom up. Im looking for something that has atleast the jet and i believe i want either a dominator or berkeley? I guess my question is if you were looking for a boat, that you want to build and plan on putting some pretty decent horsepower to (650+) what pre-reqs would you have?

Im not looking for triple digits but would like to be 80+, im looking at "v hulls" like a southwind or tahiti etc? I know there are lots in this design. What would be the most sought after or best for what i plan to do? Im not looking to buy anything right now but maybe in a couple of months.

In otherwords, if someone can "school" me on jet boats that would be great

stay away from a tahiti/hawaiian/kona... 650 in one of those you'll blow the 1/4 stringers right out of it. hah.

if you want a fun go fast project go with like a nordic, eliminator, miller, southwind, bahner, hallett, rogers hull.

a couple of months will be a good time but be ready to jump on a good hull if its a smokin deal.

if money is no object you can always keep your eyes out for a california performance or gullwing. if you have a fire in your wallet theres always a rouse hull.

yeah i wish money was no object. This will be a project stretched over a couple years and budgeted. I plan to do all of the work (or atleast as much as possible) myself.

See, ive built quite a few street cars in the past and have gotten out of the car scene. I now want to do a boat project and expect it to take a while. To be honest i really want to do a big block mopar project :-)

On a side not, what do those hulls run?

$10k bare.

i think only 10 rouse were made and then the shop was closed. but under a handfull were ever rigged. they're pretty bad ass though.

What's wrong with kona? I know a few people with them, myself included and they are full stringer boats but that's not to say all are.

But there are hulls out there that are pretty much ment to move in a hurry. There's 4 things I would look for in a good project hull. A good bottom with no fiberglass work needed ( ill tell you all about that if you want), full stringer, preferably a berk pump, and something that's solid overall.

High 5 for wanting to put together a Mopar boat, but don't say that too loudly cuz all the GM guys will just hang their heads in shame and not participate in helping you.

But IF you really want to go this route you are going to have to look around for mounts, exhaust etc. and you will find they are not that easy to come by. You can always fab up a rail mounting system (if you have the skills) and you can probably even build you own header type exhaust, but again it takes a fair amount of skill to do it right. Keep us updated whatever you do. I am not far away if you want help (mostly beer) with this project

Good luck , with any project you start on! boats are fun and quick to turn into yard art, cause the price has gone way over budget. And a mopar motor is not going to help. Dont get me wrong i like abuse myself, my motor of choice is a 455 olds. If your serious about a boat project buy something complete that needs a little help , or a boat that the motor is missing. But if you have a budget and you have to follow it kinda close starting from scratch is NOT GONNA WORK.

Now this is just my opinion and may not be everyone elses, Good luck either way!

Yeah the plan honestly is to buy something complete or very close to complete that i can then change/re-do what i want. But ill have all of the stupid little stuff that ends up costing you a lot more than you ever expected

I have a 69 Rogers hull that kind of became yard art that I might let go for a few hundred. It has a Berkley Jet and no engine.

I hope i didnt give you that itch making passes on thursday and friday in the swtd

. Like said above. Miller, southwind, Bahner, Rogers, Hallet, eliminator, would do well. I would stay away from the nordic and the southwind with bigger HP, they tend to have a porpoising issues with some of them. I am looking for a miller or a rogers to replace my Southwind 18 right now.

Things i would look for
+ Gel or paint is in good condition( ive re done to many boats)
+full stringers
+no glass work
+ berk or Dominator jet w/ Split bowl and diverter
+tandem axle trailer.

Jake the Nordic is a somewhat heavy hull and will handle the HP.....

I am not saying that it won't handle it hp. I've herd lots of stories that southwinds and Nordics that run in the upper 90's start to get handling problems, "lots of lift built into those hulls" I also herd that bottom work will make it worse if it's not done exactly right. Not trying knock your boat.

4 sure. It ran well. Got 98 out of her and river Dan still got me by 4. But I get him by 4 out of the hull.

Yes Jake, this is all your fault haha. I love my banner and will keep it as a cruiser for family stuff or tubing boarding etc... hell she runs pretty hard as it is. After I discovered the driveshaft bellows was ripped and headed back to McIntyre. At wot for the whole trip I checked the GPS and apparently hit 71.3. Which is plenty fast enough for that thing. But I'd also like something to play with that I can use to scare the crap out of someone haha.

My Nordic handles very good all around and runs hard in chop! Porpoising has never been an issue. Mine runs 76 mph. But if I was to buy another boat it would be a Rogers TR bottom or SWTD/Placecraft.
