Diesel WHOA's
« on: December 12, 2009, 01:58:53 PM »
so since tuesday my truck has been acting really funny, and i couldn't figure out why until now...now i need to pay for a 200$ diagnostic, and then find out what injectors half to be replaced...each injector is approx 200-300 a piece...i might just do them all, but to do the job by myself it is still going to cost upwards of 2 grand...ouch...can next year get here already this probably has been the worst year of my life and i just want to wake up and be 2010

i'd pay the 200 and replace only the bad ones. who knows, maybe its just 1 or 2...and if thats the case, that 200 saved you 100's

yeah the deal is i found a company that will say all 8 and almost everything to do the job...you half to tear alot off of the motor to do these injectors it is a pretty elaborate job, the kit costs about 1400 dollars and they say it takes a first timer about 14 hours to do the job meaning me its gonna take 16-20...monday after work i am going to take the truck to a shop that is able to do balance rates on my injectors and see if they really are bad or possibly figure out what is going on, but from what i am told my type if engine is plagued by injector issues, and right at the milemarker where they like to go out...the good news is i know only a couple are out, but i might as well do them all...however one side of the motor is alot easier to get to if i have one or two out there...then i will go ahead and just do that side.....everything of this magnatude always happens to me at x-mas time...remember truck was broken into as well around this time

Nordie, before you have any work done call your local dealer and give them the info on your truck (year, mileage) and see it it still falls under the warranty.  You might be able to get away with a small fee and not the big ticket.

Next question though, how much hot rod stuff do you have on it and can it be removed easily?

Just have the ones fixed that are broke. Mine (A Ford) is having similar issues until warmed up with the cold weather, and yeah, gonna be some $$$. Replacing these injectors is not something you really want to tackle on your own, IMO.  Done it many times on Backhoes, Bulldozers, OIl Drilling Rigs and trucks. Not fun, and usually involves a lot more than just the injectors.

yeah they extended the warranty to 7 year 200k warranty for just the injectors i tried calling dealership and service dept. was already closed so i cant call them till monday...as far as bolt ons i havent got a clue...the visible ones are edge programmer, afe cold air intake, and 4 inch magnaflow exhaust...however my turbo is really loud, and the 02's i have heard arent like that so i think someone has messed with the turbo because i dont even have the cute little plastic engine cover...my normal warrany expired 10k ago when i hit 95k....bolts ons will not by any means be easy to cover up...they did my water pump under warranty with all the bolt ons there....

i found a site with the exact way of tackling this job and doesnt appear to be too difficult...the deal is i cant even afford the replacement parts right now let alone pay someone to do the job so it will half to be done by me...the good news is i have the step by step detail to replace then, and an account with alldata...so armed with them two im sure i will be ok....the hardest part is doing all this on a lifted truck...im waiting to a guy to call me back so we can scan my truck and diagnose the exact problem and the problematic injectors...if it is 1-3 injectors i will only replace them...if it is 4 or more i am gonna replace all 8...i remember my step-dad having chevy replace his cause he was out on the road, and had to and when it was all said and done the bill was 5 thousand dollars...thats right 5 grand...no way no how will i shovel out that dough...

if it wasnt for bad luck i wouldnt have any luck at all

however my turbo is really loud, and the 02's i have heard arent like that so i think someone has messed with the turbo

im not turbo tech, but i've owned a few turbo cars in my day. the noise you are talking about can be caused by a number of things, including the turbo going bad. mainly the fins are getting rough edges. you do have a engine programmer that probably increases the boost causing the turbo to work harder which in turn makes its lifespan shorter. also if you have a boost leak, that will make the turbo sound louder. of course you dont feel a performance drop, this is due to the turbo working harder to create the correct boost pressure.

just some things to consider. i dont know shit about turbo diesel trucks, but turbos in general all function the same.

diag will be done tomorrow it will cost me 200 for one hour of diag...we are going to check balance rates on the injectors...lb7 duramax motors 01-04 are plagued by this issue i have spent since wednesday on the computer researching everything, and the symptoms are all there for injector issues...the motor still runs good, but i know for a fact that it is an injector...i wont be shoveling out dough for trouble shooting, but it is hard to find someone in vegas area that has a clue about these things...found one guy just waiting for a return phone call...i wasnt believing it was injectors till i decided to start my motor today, and finally found the white smoke, and the oil is a touch high meaning she's pumping fuel into the oil...im guessing it is just one injector, but there is a spec for replacement and i will replace all the injectors out of spec....then when the rest of em go i'll half to replace them as well...meaning i should do em all while i got the motor opened up right? my biggest concern is this is my only source of transportation and i got to goto work ya know?

actually i was thinking that the cold air intake causes the spooling sound...truck runs about 25 26 pounds of boost when on the go pedal

Borrow my Pontiac, everyone else has recently, lol.

I got a bad over-spooling deal on mine late last summer and it was a bad wastegate. Unless towing heavily, uphill and really on the pedal, you should NOT be going into the 25-26lb range, I would think! Mine never sees more than 15 PSI when loaded or empty, flatfooted getting to speed on an on ramp. Towing the boat it'll rarely (The only time, I think, was the Temple bar trip last March) approach 20 PSI. Somethings seriously amiss here! Maybe the Edge programmer?

Hellifiknow! It's a Chebbie!  :D

if it were up to me i would be chasing 30-40 psi i think out of all the other duramax guys i know they have higher end programmers are pushing alot more boost...ive seen a 101 psi from a cummings getting 9mpg....the point is there is no issue with my turbo or boost...i been running my truck like this since day one...im at 108k and that is the margin for the injectors between 50-150k

I dunno. I just remember Terry informing me (correctly, I might add), that built up boost pressure on an engine was a bad sign you were over pressurizing it, as it obviously cannot flow that kind of volume at that rpm. Diesel's can, and should, take more pressure, but more pressure= more strain on parts unnecessarily, as I understand it. You also need to flow more fuel as pressures rise. It's all about efficiency, as I recall the discussion (Actually, several before he drilled it into my lil brain).

But what do I know, lol. Ask Terry.  100 PSI is INSANE to me! And I doubt intake manifold gaskets and other parts last long with that, and I cannot even imagine the exhaust gas temp readings on that engine!

But I've also heard horror stories about the 6.0 in mine, and haven't had a real problem 'cept the cold running at our recent sub-freezing (45 degree) temps of late.  ;D 129k and running strong as ever, once warmed up.

As it is, you need injectors, and this discussion is not helping that lil bro. It never ends, the cost of maintenance.

FWIW I just spent $400 fixing the g/f's Sable so it had heat because her ex-room mate put stop leak in to try and fix the leaking reservior. (what a FUN TIME THAT was, lol, asswipe clogged the new heater core! Luckily it withstood a 125 PSI pressure flush and a new blend motor).

Hence the Pontiac is free now if you need it as a loaner, lol.

it is just my series motor that is plagued by this...they probably would have lasted a little longer but the additional tune probably doesnt help, and my step-dad same truck lost his at 95k it is to be expected and happened at an untimely manner for me, and i mean really untimely...as soon as my saving shrunk because i havent been working as much untimely...but with my recent luck i should have expected this right? tomorrow i will find out if my truck falls into the 7 year 200k warranty if it does i will sneak by with inches because after the 31'st i would be out of the 7 year plan....if not i get the walk of shame of borrowing money something i never have had to do before....the good news is i can pay it back, but i hate asking anyone for help....still waiting on a guy with efi live to properly diagnose the truck for me and find out if it is indeed the injectors....but i will almost garuntee it

so tomorrow i find out if it is covered under warranty called the dealership...they said it should be as long as the injectors are the actual problem...they are going to diagnose it and that is going to cost 100 bucks for one hour diagnostic but if covered under warranty i am fine with that...so long as it is the problem lets all hope...they told me the only thing to void warranty would be a type of programmer...well lets just say no programmer exist in the truck right now...its on the work bench  ;) ....and the warranty will cover rental car costs, but even if it doesnt 50 bucks for a rental car wont be too bad so if i am out 150 besides 2grand to do the job myself i will be just fine with that...only tomorrow will tell

yeah which is totally fine with me cause then they will tell me the problem and i can fix it myself...j&s diesel wanted to charge me 200 hundo for diagnostic so it's fine regardless...i will get to the bottom of this, but with my days of online research everything tells me injectors...

i've done alot of injector work to those motors, if it's got a soild miss probaly a injector, if the oil is over full and does it when cold the injector o rings are going to bad real easy to fix about a good 6-8 hours

yeah couldnt agree more....mine is more of a vibration im guessing a miss by a diesel a diesel standard...i was told by many that a good sign is the puff of white smoke at start-up and the fact that my oil is reading high but not super high if i was to guess i am out one injector is out...the balance rates will be tested tomorrow, but i am almost certain it is injector...not scared to tackle the job but if warranty covers it i am game...
