Title: Don't worship the sun..
Post by: BIG JOHNSON on January 10, 2014, 02:25:36 PM
For years my ol lady has bitched at me about wearing sunblock. I've always hated how sunblock feels on my neck, plus I like to get a nice tan in the summer.

Well the same chick has recently been bugging the crap out of me to go to the Dr. for a checkup and to have them look at this funny little flat brown spot on my shoulder. I hate going to the Dr, and I pissed and moaned about going. I thought it was the stupidest reason to pay a $25 copay.

Turns out it's malignant melanoma in situ.

Bummer, but it was caught at stage zero. They'll do a little more trimming next week and say I'll be good to go and very lucky the woman caught it.

Don't be afraid of the dermatologist.

I had a very similar situation happen to me, but they found several spots on my back. Nothing that was a problem yet, but yeah. So times they are right, I also hate the doctors. I still go to the pediatrician and he knows when I'm come in it's something bad. He is always telling me to come in before I feel I need to.

Glad to hear you're all good though.

It's like preventative maintenance, we all do it to our vehicles and boats...

Had melanoma when I was 12, and wouldn't hurt to get into the dermatologist soon.... Glad all worked well for you brother!

Wife will be chasing me all over the boat this summer with banana boat, maybe I can get a banana boat sponsorship and letter it up.

I rode my stand up almost every other day after work this past spring and summer, sometimes before I had to work. Never wore sunblock. This summer I know I'm gonna look like bubble boy on the ski with a Gilligan hat and a wet long sleeve..

Be sure to get something meant to block UV rays.   Getting any ordinary shirt wet lessens any blocking benefit the simple t-shirt material may have.

Had a scare in the early 90's when I had severe burns on the tops of my ears, it actually cooked the cartilage like a bratwurst and hurt like hell.

Ever since then, I have been using the Banana Boat Sport spray sunscreen SPF 30 on my face, neck and arms every single day and wear a stupid looking floppy hat when I know my exposure is going to be greater than normal. It seems normal now that I have been doing it so long. One of my good friends went through the skin grafts and radiation treatments for Melanoma and it literally opened my eyes.

I literally work outside, sometimes on metallic/reflective roofs all day, every day.

I am so glad to hear you caught it so early. So rock on, but take steps to make sure you can be an old ass rocker, it pisses the youngn's off...  ;D

Go at least once a year to your derm... most over the counter sun block lotions create or promote cancer BTW.

So far, no study has shown sunblock to actually  cause cancer. But it is recommened  that  micronized zinc oxcide  sunscreen is used  instead.

It's better to confirm that nothing is wrong.

I guess you're right. Now I'm paranoid and have to set another appointment which is going to be tough since I've canceled twice. Ugh

They took it out and all good now. Little tender and skin feels stretched.

The real Dr. went over the pathology report with us and explained that it was caught so early that the thickness of the lesson was hardly measurable. In situ. Better than 99% chance that it has not and will not spread. Went back to target and bought even more sunblock for this season.

Why is it only people who are lathered up in the goop get skin cancer?
I personally won't wear such toxins.

I've read a lot on suntan lotion and I won't use it either. It can go numerous ways. Skin is an organ, actually our biggest and applying all that crap to it can really fudge you up. Kinda like adding fluoride to the water. Or using plastic dinning ware. Or cooking with aluminum pots and pans. Or eating at McDonalds. :-)

Fukushima.

I'm just throwing this out there and I don't want you to think that this is in any way a personal attack...

I will never say "the fish is safe, go ahead and eat as much as you can of it"...

However.

From what I know and have learned over the last 17 years working around X-ray, radiation labs and mocked up nuclear power plants with GE and PG&E, your concerns are not without merit, but somewhat misguided.

To say you "wont eat fish caught in the Pacific" is just silly.

Why would you eat fish everywhere but the Pacific? So your saying you would eat fish/seafood from the Gulf? You would eat fish/Seafood form the China sea?

Where I am going with this is that if you eat a farm raised fish, say a salmon, you are consuming an amount of methylmercury and PCB's several times greater than a fish caught in the wild, is that OK?

Gamma radiation is most detrimental/dangerous when it is inhaled, via mists and vapors, not necessarily by ingestion into the gut. So my recommendation would be to go ahead and enjoy some seafood once in a while, but don't breathe the fog off the California coast. Technically the fog will harm you quicker attacking the lymph systems..

Just my humble opinion and you can let it mean nothing at all, just couldn't leave it lie there...

You just have to do the research and know what you are rubbing onto your skin.

First off, look for UVA and UVB protection, UVA is the one that will mess you up. There are also chemicals to avoid, straight up, typically if you can't pronounce it, it has no business on your skin.

I can tell you that my dermatologist recommended the Banana Boat Sport spray...

I have been using it religiously for many years and it seems to work very well.

I simply will not go outside without it...

BTW, the Banana Boat stuff is recommended  by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

You guys are a bunch of conspiracy theorists.  :sly:

I'm sure there is more to the radiation from Japan than they are telling that's for sure.

Just my 2 cents. No trying to start anything.

The whole seafood theory, well I don't do sea food so no thanks. Fish sticks and tater tots with the kids is as far as I go lol and that may not even be fish.

But as far as sun screen it's banana boat for infants. Simply because we always have it because of the baby and my older daughter has sensitive skin and that's the only one that works for her as well so I'm not gonna stock up on 4 different kinds of sun screen. But I also keep a huge sombrero in the boat and one in my garage and they generally are used often with a long sleeve.  Skin Cancer runs in my family, pretty sure because everyone in my family is in construction and in the sun all day and pretty much everything now causes cancer so I'm kinda careful when out in the sun.
