Dont forget to once over .......
« on: March 26, 2008, 06:04:31 pm »
YOUR TRAILER ! As the season begins to get in gear , lake and river trips will start to be planned and in my case the last thing to get looked at is the trailer . There have been a few of us already on here that have had trailer mishaps. (some worse than others , right speedy  ;) ) Something just as simple as lubing the coupler and checking your tires for abnormalities , greasing the bearings to get you over to your local trailer shop and have them give you some suggestions and some prices .

My buddy just roasted a bearing on his trailer . Called Kustom Trailer and they would've charged about $130 per axle . Cheap insurance if you ask me and they arent that difficult to do yourself either . Having said that , I have some work to do . Lets be safe on the road and have fun on the water .

you are absolutely right about trailers especially tires...just because the tread looks good doesnt mean shit...a big one is making sure you have the pin in the tounge...or something equivalent such as a 5/16 bolt double nuted <~~~thats how i roll

A few weeks back on my way home from Parker I saw about 4 Three-wheeled trailers stranded on the side of the road. Im bringing a spare this summer.

One suggestion I would like to make is the fact that I bring 2 mounted spares with me. If I LOSE 1 ON THE way no big deal, if I lose 1 on the way home no big deal, better than payin big bucks at a place like needles for a tire. Also have a pair of good tie downs or chains with hooks so ya can wrap up an axle if ya have the unfortunate experience of losing a 3rd tire, that is if ya have a 2 axle trailer. Just my .02   Mark

Last year on the AVI trip I had 3 blowouts on my tandem trailer. You have to air down the tire pressure when it's 120+ degree's outside.

The advice below is awesome and would have saved my assss and could have prevented me from having to go to the tire store and pay $480 for 4 tires.

One suggestion I would like to make is the fact that I bring 2 mounted spares with me. If I LOSE 1 ON THE way no big deal, if I lose 1 on the way home no big deal, better than payin big bucks at a place like needles for a tire. Another great idea pertaining to trailers is the size of the safety chain. I think almost all of the trailers I have owned have had puny chains on them. There's a thread on this board about that very subject.

(I'm the guy who lost a trailer with a boat on it - ball latch broke, snapped the safety chains and had the boat careen out of control next to a elementary school. At least the insurance denied coverage 'cause the watercraft ins wasn't caused by the boat, and to the auto insurance the boat is cargo - so here is the $200 less $500 deducable (read no money) for your trailer, sorry about the trailer cargo, we don't cover that).....

Try Progressive.  I just got a policy and they count the trailer and boat together for total value.  They also cover theft from things not bolted to the boat (Cooler, I-pod, etc) from theft up to $1000.  Just tell them no idea on the HP and top speed and with one accident on my record and a separate auto policy I got a year for $380.  I am making my 1st river trip this weekend before the real heat comes, but I did add bearing buddies and repack the bearings which appeared to still be OK with fresh Hi-Temp grease.  I really need to get a spare before the next trip.

Thanks. I called progressive and it was $413 yr for my setup - until I added my 35 year old wife. She is too young for them, and it jacked my policy up by $128! Called AAA - $403/yr for same deal.

Check and double check.  Last week I had my trailer worked over.:  new shoes, seals, springs, backing plate, pull and re-lube bearings, basically everything but new drums.  Sunday night leaving San V I burned up both bearings... smoke screen down the 67!  Double check their work after a few miles, you never know what yahoo worked on your pride and joy.

Even though, my trailer & boat were covered when hooked to my truck , the agent told me if for some reason they come off, they are no longer covered..........so of course i had ins on them seperately. Can never be too sure.

Whatch it guy's they have loop holes all in there favor :banghead: And it cost us more to be covered and guess who's getting rich off it..........

But what you gonna do ??? Gotto have it.

You dont need a read out from a dyno to get ins..But dont lie and dont tell the truth, a simple i really dont know what the hp is ;D

Now if you have  a blower sitting on top, that changes the whole ball game

I think the biggest thing that affects us Jet owners is over the transom headers. I have yet to find anyone to insure my boat. Sure, I did the progressive online thing and got a policy, and they never asked. But I called and asked, they dropped me. I know, why open your mouth. But lots of folks can vouch that if you lie or dont disclose, why even pay? Cause they will not pay the claim once they investigate :-[

While in transit it is covered by the tow vehicle!

While in transit is NOT covered by most insurance policies. The only thing that is covered is the trailer itself, not the cargo...meaning the boat!

Your boat has to have "Property" coverage on your boat, otherwise if it becomes seperated from the trailer while in transit (we all know who that refers to) you have NO insurance.  You also need to make sure you DO NOT have a "IN Transit" Exclusion on your policy.

and I know everyone has opinions on what is right and wrong, So for all to know this info came from the Regional Vice President for AAA!

If you have any questions about your policy or questions in general let me know thru PM and I will have the wife go over your policy.

Yep, I'm the biach that found out about the whole cargo deal. Now it would cover anything the boat hits after the deducatable (and your rates go up), but the boat itself is SOL.

Progressive asked my to get the cam specs before they would insure. Not sure what they do if I change it later.

AAA physically has to see the boat before they will insure, but they had a better rate. I am putting the single plane on it, a cover, and through transom exhaust to make sure no insurance issues pop up while the inspection happens.

I am going to make sure its insured no matter what, in a stated value amount (non depreciated). I need to see what the AAA policy actually is, otherwise I'll end up with progressive.

Marc if you have a contact in AAA, PM me.

Well I took your advice Beerjet...     :o bunk weld failed...  Now it looks like I will have to buy that mig welder after all  ;D
Trailer needs some attention before I can go to the lake, but it's all good, was planning on redoing her anyways... paint, welds, safety chains,
bunks and tie downs to be improved! But now I know a few things need serious attention before I can move her. May have caught it myself, but...
thinking of what everyone said, thought I would take a look over everything. Glad I did  :o
Boating safer  ;D
