So work has been stupid stupid slow for me...I mean come on im in the construction trade...Well my old super intendant has been in contact with me and asking what has been going on with me at work...well the people that took over for him take the family, and friends as their main priority for keeping busy "which is understandible"...anyway my old super intendant has kept in touch with me and asked me about my work hours...well 2 weeks ago while i am dealing with all the other chrises in my life he asked me to show up to orientation at a new state of the art power plant in california for orientation...so friday knowing i was going to be off on monday i set it all up...so today i spent all day at orientation, and a phone call to my other company about the fact i was there did not go over so well...should i feel bad about this? they work me like 30 hours one week, then sit me at home the next! As it appears now i half to drive to state line everyday, and do what i do? What is state tax going to be like, or do i even have to deal with that? are you californians mad at me? should my previous company be mad at me for not telling them? or should i be proud of being part of the worlds largest solar power plants in the world?

Take the job Josh and don't feel bad doing what's right for you.
If you work "in" the state of california you will have state tax taken from your check and will have to file california state income tax come april 2012.

Josh, I'm doing my own thing, left my job, it'll be OK. The more time you sweat worrying about the petty stuff, the less time you have petting the sweaty stuff lil bro! ;)
IN other words, take a chance and bet on yourself once in a while!

No way bro, take the job and don not look back. I am leaving my job tomorrow for various reasons and when it comes down to it, there is only one person that knows what is best foor you, and only one person that is looking out for you. And that is you. Take the job, don't feel bad, especially in this economy you gotta get work where you can.

you got to do whatever is best for you. if you can become a state worker that is job security and you wont work very hard. ;D. Plus they usualy have pensions and good 401k plans. i would say go for it. steady income is better than work that comes and goes

If you can ignore the fact that Cali has the highest taxes in the country, and that they are so broke that you may be taking IOU's than I say JUMP Froggy ! Look at it as Win Win -- you get more hours and better benefits and they get to hire another relative. :thumbup:

Actually I think AZ has higher taxes. So far, the state hasn't given out IOU's to employees in over 17 years and if you sign up with a CA Employees credit union like Golden One, they will honor the IOU's. I think you should go for it. You can't beat the retirement or medical, dental, vision benefits!

so they're upset that you're doing an orientation somewhere else? they should be. i wouldve done a sick day, and left it at that. they dont need to know any other information. why would u even tell them that you're potentially working somewhere else without giving a PROPER notice that you'd be leaving the company? they're prolly worried that you're about to bail on them. theres nothing bad about leaving a company. you're not the first employee to leave and you wont be the last. but you gotta go about it the right way so you make yourself look good to both sides.
imagine the conversation after the phone call:
you: "hello, this is bob, im currently at company B doing an orientation..."
them: "wait... what?"
after the call "i just got off the phone with bob and he's working for another company"

i dont think they should take taxes out claim exempt youll pay nevada the tax not cali..hell if you fuel up in nevada youll save even more.calis about to charge another 1.00 a gallon to state tax just to get this dump out of dept...look out here i come nevada..that s weird i work in az,utah and nevada,ship even texas.thats weird they must owe me tax return.. :screwy: :screwy: :screwy: :sly: :sly: O0

You can be loyal to your current employer, and keep working less than full time, or you can tell them thanks for the work, but you've got another offer and you're going to take it.

i should have specified a little better...i still work for a sub contractor, but the job is in the state of california!!! the job will some how some way end up in the hands of california, but as far as right now i am there to tie rebar...allegedly between the two companies they should keep me busy, but im pretty sure i burned a bridge...although i shouldnt really care, i am leaving some close friends behind that i have worked with for 7 years now...i have seen the writing on the wall with this company so im hoping i made the right choice! i guess one of the best perks of this job is it's 4 10's so river trips will be alot easier!!! I now have a ton of other projects on my hands as well with my gramps passing on...he left behind a cabinet shop in his back yard...a mechanics bay with some very nice vehicles, and 3 houses to be maintained!

Hopefully, you answered any doubt you had with that statement. It sucks to leave a job when you where you work with good friends. But if you are getting passed up for work that's given to "family and friends" :sly:
Focus on the fact that your old boss looked up, that should say something about you and your work.
4 10's can make for a long day, but a 3 day weekend, EVERY weekend is nice.
When would you start?

sorry for the late respond most us of do realize that when the contractor is done with you maybe and suppose to give 24hr layoff notice does not usally happen so do they care what you think. go for it and good luck

i have already started, and am already hating it...for one i am not allowed to work like i normally do...we cant run, and haul ass...for two the contractor sucks ass, they cant even stay ahead of us, 8 rodbusters to like 75 carpenters....for three the drive can absolutely lick my ball sack!!!! im used to a 20 minute drive to work, not a focking 1 hour n 15 minute drive!!!!!!...for 4 the state of california will be taking their state tax from my check! yet i still will be in a better spot then i was here in town...the 10 hour day and the drive is already taking a toll on me, and with the slower work progress, and the not the more haul ass method i am used to, it actually makes me more tired! i dont want to do a damn thing when i get home!!!!
