i was just out in the garage and noticed that my boat has chrome tipped thru hull exhaust with rubber flappers on it.... my question is can i take these flappers off the tips and run my boat that way,or will i flood the engine with water apon power down????

also i was thinking of putting a cold air intake on my engine..... will this help out on power or not? and will i have to get a marine air filter or will a regular automotive filter work?

You need a USCG aproved air filter if your going that way, in my experience a cold air dealio is not required as much as more air to the engine cover, areal easy way to tell if you need to play with that area is to remove the engine cover and do a couple of speed runs comparing it to the #'s you get with the cover on..
I did a Carrera for a guy several years ago and he had a built 468 BBC in it (I/O) and we pulled the cover and picked up 200 RPM (which is absolutely huge) we fixed it with four speaker grills cut into the rear seat to get more air. Both cheap and effective.
Leave the flappers there. There is no benefit in pulling them off (at all). They will save you from an unexpected engine overhaul.

thanx for the input i need to take the cover off and replace the hinges any ways will check when i get it off.... still a little to cold to take it to the river right now,not to mention the river is way too high right now due to all the damn rain!!!!!!!!

are you running the Illinois river or do you take it out on Lake Michigan at all. have seen some great power boat races from there a time or two. i used to live in michigan and i worked in Chi town for about 6-8 mths one time doing cable audit. great town, and great food. found a great little mexican joint that made the best breakfast burrito`s. must have weighed a pound at least.
and hell a little high water is more fun to run with anyways. lol.

no im in southern illinois we run the ohio river most of the time, somtimes we go to rend lake but its just to damn rough for my little boat... :mad:

ahh ok gotcha. still gotta love the river and the lakes. one of the things i miss living here in okie town. i found it so funny at first to listen to someone say they are going to the lake for the weekend. i believe the biggest lake here is called Eufala. has something like 600 miles of shoreline i beleive.but when you come from the great lakes area it is hard to call it a lake. but with having been here now for 8yrs i am getting used to it. and with having just gotten certified for diving i would love to go home and be able to dive one of the great lakes.

I agree with GT, leave the flappers be. Not gonna gain anything, and if you do mostly river running, even more so as currents can easily waterlock the engine depending on which direction you're running and lift. (see the same thing on the lakes here at times, when they open the locks the current can be extreme at say Saguaro or Canyon lake).
You also need (required) a USCG Flame arrestor in all 50 states on all boats, from what I've found out. I would look at ways to direct what airflow you do have to the engine as it is maybe a bigger flame arrestor, again, as GT said. (Which, to my mind, is that not what a cold air intake does anyway?)
While we're on the subject, when did the BS Honda guys start making "Cold Air Intakes" for watercraft? Missed that evolution.
If you want more performance from the exhaust, gonna hafta go with center risers, TT or OT headers. Pretty much you're only options.

I am from STL and probably going to run up there this weekend. (the river is flooded again :mad:
Had my buddy call the corps today and see if there were any restrictions:
called Illinois Army Corp of Engineers - Lake Carlyle...spoke to Dave he said as long as it doesn't interfere with anyone's recreation (doesn't piss anyone off) ;D everything should be fine. He didn't even know what the noise restriction is...I mentioned the motor you're running. He didn't have a problem with it so I guess there aren't any horsepower restrictions.

yeah riser were about an hour and a half from carlyle lake dont know if we are gonna make it out this weekend or not hoping to but wife has to work :mad:. there are no restrictions on the lake maybe if we get to go we might see you up there......

Great looking boats, I do have to admit I like the hulls a lot! We got more 'beaners on here than we have in Guadalupe!, lol, and kinda neat to see one on the water!
