Teak Wood Swim Step

OK I bought the 1977 Tahiti for $1600 seems to be a great deal. I am excited get to bring it home tommorow. This was the first time in 18 years I have been boatless and it only lasted about 8 months never again I will die owning a boat. My question to you guys is the swim step needs to be sanded and refinished. after sanding do i just add teak oil or do you clear coat the step. First boat with a teak step. Hopefully someone out here has done this before and can give me some helpful tips. Need to get it ready for the lake, river or any body of water just water....

when i first brought my boat home...the wood step needed attention too....went to boat store and found "starbrite" 3 step teak cleaner..
1 bottle was teak cleaner, kinda cleaned out the black stuff in the wood
1 bottle was teak brightner, kinda like a wood bleach
1 bottle was teak oil, to seal and preserve

i did have some rough edges around the wood i did hit it with some 220 on a da and then started the 3 step process

the more elbow grease you use the better it turns out

I seen that marine west carries the starbrite. I am going to hit it slightly with 220 sand paper just to make a super smooth finish before I do the 3 step process. Hopefully it comes out super nice.

dont use too fine a paper or you will close the pores of the wood and it will not absorb the finish as well I would stick with 150 max and dont sand too much just my 02

Starbrite blows...

I have been using Teka for better than 25 years, (my first actual job was a boat detailer for a shop)..

You will be blown away, use this before doing any sanding at all, teak is a very oily wood, it does not really take much to bring it back, it's the dirt and mildew that make it look like poo poo....
