Well the new career didnt go so well after all. I am going to quit tomorrow ;D. The practice I directed for the last 14 years made me an offer I couldnt refuse to come back ;D Nothing ventured nothing gained right? Tomorrow should be fun day ::)

I think some people are "designed" to be in outside sales and some not. The time away from my family is not worth the exrta money I was making. My kids are only young once. Went out with my old boss for beers last night and after talking for a while it was too good of an offer not to take.

Good for you Bob, I noticed that you were gone a lot more with this job than with your old one, and you're right, nothing ventured, nothing gained. The whole time I was working in Las Vegas I kept telling myself that I had to at least try it, I did, it didn't suit me so I'm back, and I'm happy that I am.

I walked away from Retail years ago for the same reason. Young kids. Came back to it a couple of years ago 'on conditions'. (And honestly, I did miss it). Miracle Home Depot hired me into that with my background.
I was only an associate, and worked my 40 a week (No more 70-80 hour salary gig), and played stupid so I didn't overshadow my managers and District manager. Was fun messing with them for a change, the idiots.
Still kinda work that, 'cept for the last couple of weeks playing store manager, but I like my gig. Been harder as a single parent, that's why the Mead trip, and more to come to make up for it.
Sounds like you made the right move. My lil bro's in industrial sales, and he's out of state, or country, seems like about 15-20 days a month. Plus his own machine shop/mold shop. Hard on his kids, and proly has a lot to do with his ongoing divorce.
That's no life.

Thanks for asking. Went REALLY well. Better than I expected. My now ex-boss even asked me if I would come back to speak at seminars and practice management meetings. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders and i am really looking forward to going back "home" and doing a kick ass job. Thanks for all the well wishes. Now it looks like I get a couple weeks vacation ;D

Hey Bob, just a couple of sincere questions....How much better did you feel coming back than starting the new job? And knowing what you know now, would you be less inclined to take another position?
Just curious, my decision makeing paradigm has been tested lately and I wondered if your experiences applies to my situation.
Congrats on the new/old job dealio, kids come first, they get big so fast it's kind of scary... :screwy:

I feel really good coming back. I felt excited and very scared changing jobs. Even though I was only gone for a little over 3 months I really learned alot. The Dr. I am going back to work for and I had a great conversation in regards to the issues I had prior to my departure and we both "get it". This experience is going to make me a better employee and a stronger person. Like Keith mentioned in his post it is a scary time to be looking for work right now. If I had any doubt that I wouldnt be able to walk back in to this field I wouldnt have left. In my business, offices are always looking for opticians and practice managers. I just got lucky that they were not able to find a replacement for my position. The Dr. gave me a huge compliment that he has interviewed alot of people but he is trying to "fill my shoes" and that person just does not exsist. Felt really good to have something positive said about you. Havent had that for the past 3 months ;). As far as your position goes I dont what that is. My best advise is to not burn any bridges on the way. As I have proven you sometimes have to turn around to back across that same bridge.

Hey Bob, thanks for taking the time, I have been offered a position with another company that fits what I do a little better than my present employer, but there are a million concerns with the economy and how fast it's still going downhill, there is no way I am going to be guaranteed anything, but my position as of right now is really solid and we were able to stay busier than any other division of the company I work for, which is great, but we had to work really hard to stay busy (I hope that makes sense).
The biggest problem I have right now is that I have topped out unless I want to take a middle managment position, which I am not ready to do at this point and time, I like the work I do, just not the people I do it for. Right now I have six of the greatest people there are under me and without them I would not have the track record that our service team has, this bus drives itself and they make me look good (and they know it).
I have had several freinds go to this other company and would love to go over and work with them again, but the comfort thing for me is keeping me from making a move, as for the burning bridges thing, I have only burned one bridge in the 25 years I have been working and that boss is in prison ;D
