Title: From empty hull to a restored river racer in 45 days
Post by: RushinEliminator17 on July 11, 2014, 06:01:07 PM
1979 19' Dana Sprint BBC Berkeley

My son is super into disneys planes movie and figurines. So he asked me "Daddy, build me a "Dusty" boat."

So, I did just that!

Went from an empty hull to water ready in 45 days. Went thru EVERYTHING! I have pics of every single step...just too lazy to post a build thread.

Lots of late nights and super early morning starts.

I just brought the boat home from the shop into my garage at home. Jet sticks out into my wife's laundry area... Needless to say, she's less than thrilled.

For those that know me, I'm not really a Chevy guy... My passion is Olds, I know, I'm a rare breed.

Anyways some specs of what's in in:

454 030 over
Mild ported 049 heads
Rpm performer intake
4781 850 carb
Xm comp cam

Pump detailed/built by Harold Bruce/RD marine with ride plate and shoe.

Gonna take her out for a test run this weekend. We'll see what she does...
Anyone going out this weekend to any local 661 lakes?

Jason, how is the inspection at pyramid? I know you went last week. I ran the boat today, broke in the cam and made sure everything was ok... Now there is water in the bilge, and some in the pump. I don't wanna get there just to be turned around. Otherwise, I'm game to go out Sunday morning.

Is your buddies boat a Spectra?

Phil, you must be clean and dry to enter   They don't want to see any water whatsoever. Nothing in the bilge, no drips out the pump or exhaust.

Yea, didn't think anything different...I'm gonna dry everything out tomorrow.
I bet the water in my bilge is cleaner than the water in the lake!

Great boat... It was originally built and raced by a guy named Lee Daniels.  He raced compjet back in the day as well as pulled waterski racers with it.  It turned great

Thanks for sharing the inside info... I got it as an empty hull with a rotten floor from a guy who knew nothing about it.
Has a lot of bottom work done to it and it speed coated.
Funny you say it turned great, it has a center shark fin/turn fun right in front of the intake.
Also has an extreme loader, which I have a feeling will be switched out... I'm excited to see how she rides!

She ran at Arrowhead for years and was good in the rough water

Early to Mid 80's was when it raced at Arrowhead.  So I would estimate late 70's to early 80's was its compjet years.

I liked the hull a lot, that's why I got it 😎. I knew there was definitely racing history behind it, just didn't know the specifics. Glad someone chimed in with the exact details...
