German Shepard problems!

Ok help! My German is jumping out of my yard everyday. Then if someone comes up to her
She jumps back in!
I have tried everything, taller fence and I just put in an electric border on the fence. I hope this works I promised this was last resort.
Anyone else have dog escape problems?

I know this sounds funny but are you spending time with the dog . German Shepards need a lot of attention . They are pleasers..... I have had 2 in the last 20 years .Mine use to try to get out , but I made the effort to give him even more attention and now he sits and waits for me to get home. They have the perimeter dog shock collars but those are really expensive .

i have 2 other dogs she plays with during the day, she has a million toys, large yard, she is an inside dog when we are home, walks every night, feed them the best food, play with her as much as i can. she is a good dog but dam!

i put the shock collar deal last night around the top and middle of my fence, I always said this was my last resort.
I give her all the toys and she wants to carry bricks around.
today will be the first day with the shocker, im not so sure its going to work as it does really hurt or shock very hard?
not that i want it to but i also dont want to loose my dog. whats wierd is once she is out and over the fence she sits by the front dor and waits all day. she doesnt go anywhere.

I read an article a few years ago about the electric collars and the fact that they are susceptible to electrical interference. In the article a kennel owner was surprised by the pain that a dog seemed to be in at certain times during the day. Upon investigation they found that the shock collar was being triggered by an unknown source. Might be something to check on especially if the dog is alone.

Like I said this article was a few years ago and I am sure that the bugs have been worked out but just some food for thought.

I had the same problem with an escape artist dog. She would jump the fence, play with the neighborhood kids, sleep on the front lawn, etc. Then as soon as she would hear my car she would jump back over the fence into the back yard and be waiting for me like nothing was going on. My neighbor snitched on her, or I never would have known.

I know you said you made the fence taller, but how did you do it ? I added 2' of lattice work to the top of the fence. It looked good and stopped her cold. It wasnt sturdy enough for her to climb, and it was to tall for her to jump.

Well i feel your pain because my last dog Toby was a German Shepard and I live on 2 acres with a 6 ft chain link fence . Toby Got out every week ...... Some times he would stop for a few months . But eventually he would dig out to run for a few hours and always came back. I rented a bobcat to pile up 3 foot berm on the fence to stop him from getting out . I buried railroad ties under all the gates so he couldn't dig out . But he always found away . Well he ended up getting hit by a truck down the street from my house 2 years ago ...... I was devastated as he was my pal for 7 years . But I knew in my heart I did everything I could short of tying him up . I have small kids so a electric fence was out of the question . But Duke my German Shepard I have now has never tried to leave . Some Dogs just have that run instinct I guess . Good luck and I hope it works out for you . I would rather have my dog get a little shock than to get hit or something else bad .

I have three german shepherds and one of them jumps my 6ft fence weekly. I just got a call from my neighbor at 6am yesterday, telling me my puppy had jumped the fence. the best way is try to correct them off of it. my dog would climb a 4ft fence, then jump on some bikes that i had leaning on the fence. it make him easy to climb it. my other two shepherds are largly, so no chance in them jumping the fence. i have methods that work for me, but most would probably disagree with it. what i did with other bad behaviors, is make him do it when im watching and use verbal commands to make him not do it. usually it works, but sometimes, physical corections are used.

i would try lettace panel first or use some type of metal fencing. shepherds hate putting their feet in metal fence. i did it to the other side of my yard, and they dont jump it.

Years ago I had a Rottweiler that loved to escape the yard. She wouldn't jum though, she would dig under the fence. I tried alot of different things to try and keep her in. I ended up getting one of those elctronic fence deals w/ a ahock collar from PetCo. Problem solved!

Well thanks everyone ever since I put up the shock collar deal she learned where it was and her boundaries . A couple zapa is all it took she ain't a dummy so, so far so good!

My neighbor behind me had a german shepard and it kept digging under my 4ft. wood fence and I was affraid it was going to get in the yard and hurt my kids outside playing and I confronted the niegbor and he did not have a concern in the world about it and could not even give a crap. On day my wife called me at work and said the dog has a hole big enough to stick his head under and alost get in our yard so I broought home a transformer from a florecent light and it would jump and arch from wire to wire at least six inches apart so i put one wire on each side of the hole, waited for the dog to stick his head under and then i plugged it in and ZAP!, that dog jumped straight up in the air and could have cleared that 4ft. fence easy, well, I left the wire there for a few days after and you could see the dog walking along the fence but when it got by the hole it would walk way around it and it never tried to dig under the fence again...hehehe.

LOL! I kinda did the same thing many years ago wiring a large motor starting capacitor (Later changed it to a Super Coil) to the body of my Nova. Put a rubber isolated switch under the front fender to turn it on and off.

Had a problem at our local hangout, a bowling alley/pool hall/bar/Roller Skating rink where every time I came out there were three or four guys sitting on it, or leaning on it talking to the girls..........THAT problem ended quickly.

My Boss at the time had an English Bulldog that, never failed, pissed on the wheels, all four of them, every time I drove it to work. Armed it once, heard some yipping that sent shivers up my spine. Took them 2 hours to find the dog, hiding and shaking under the back porch, but he never went anywhere even close to the car again.

Electricity can be VERY useful!

We had to walk over one of the tunnels for your pool cleaner...why they are doing it is beyond me...they dont dig under fences just through the yard...gonna be interesting to see whats under the trailer

That's crazy Josh. We always had red dobies when I was growing up and not one was a digger. But they are smart f*ckers. We had a male and female for awhile and they would team up to get the neighborhood cats, they would let them walk the block wall and the male would throw all his body weight into the wall and knock the cat in and the female would grab it. Our next-door neighbors raised shelties, full on show dogs, well one of the times she was in heat my male, Max, tagged her through the fence. I came home from school to them stuck one on each side of the chain link it was freaking hilarious but the neighbor was pissed. I remember her yelling at my dad about how her dog was ruined and that my dad needs to control his dog...... sorry about the trip down memory lane.

And for the electricity stories. Same side neighbors but they moved out and rented the place to a bunch of border hoppers ( sorry but they really were illegal) anyways the new neighbors apparently didn't know how to piss in the bathroom or even in the dirt for that matter and were pissing through the chainlink onto our concrete and it flatout stunk over there. Well my dad asked them multiple times to stop and they didn't. I can't remember what my dad used but he electrified the whole fence. I can remember hearing there oldest son scream one night. Never smelt piss over there again.

i live by a bunch of crackers (sorry they are white and legal business owners) that took care of my german shepherds when they would jump the fence.

i ended up buying a 20' long dog run and no issues of them "jumping the border."
