Alright guys, I am in the market for a hand-held gps unit that I can take on the boat mainly for the speed passes but also for basic locations and such. I have decided I want a garmin but am not sure wich one is best for me. what are all you out there using? Thanks

Older garmin Etrex 60 non colour screen good on batteries and fairly accurate.

I just brought home an older Magellan Map410 unit I had bought dad years ago for mapping the locations of property markers. In playing with it, PERFECT for marine applications in it's Marine mode with USA Marine Maps downloaded. :thumbup:
Certainly not state of the art, but pretty damn cool little device! Gonna mount it in my tuna boat...... ;)

You want one that will record the top speed so you don't have to be watching the GPS while driving at speed.
The NJ racers are required to have one so I'm sure you will get some more recommendations soon.

Garmin E-Trex is very popular, i've heard good things about them, they range in price from $60 to $80. But if you have a smart phone with satellite capability you can just download a GPS app, i did on my phone, it was free too! I've tested the accuracy of it in my truck and it's nearly perfect.
I use it in boat all the time, just my $.02.

I personally love my Garmin GPSmap 60csx ;D. I use it on the boat for speed and in my cars with inaccurate speedometers, and on the quad in Glamis is the best. Geocache is fun to do and it creates a ride. All the waypoints to all the hills are downloadable from the net. If you have ever been lost in Glamis, with the GPS you will never be lost again and you can always find the same spot to camp.

what app are you using, because the one i downloaded it 2mph slow all the time...tried it in about 4 vehicles, and tested it while i was coming up on one of them signs that tells you your speed, and once again 2mph slow, and most of the time the app only shows me even numbers like 64 66 68 mph

I have an Etrex Legend and love it. Got all my favorite spots for trail riding saved. I never got to use it in a boat. But I did test it driving my truck. I was shocked how far off the speedo was on my truck.

I hate to bring this back to the top but I figured I would let everyone know what I got... I ended up buying a Garmin E-trex Venture HC, the HC means it has a higher sensitivity antena and the C means it is in color . Just bought it a fee minutes ago so now it is time to see how the Fock this thing works. I paid waaaaayyyy too much for it but I figured It will be the only one I need to buy so whatever, its only money right????? Like I always say Fake it 'til you make it

If you're using it in a boat, don't under estimate how quickly it will slip, fall & sink :banghead:
Get some pics of top speed (even if you have to get it in the truck on the way to the river) ;)

Yeah Im thinkin its gonna get a teather of some sorts to the boat or a coozie life jacket. And yes the first thing I plan on doing is getting some top speed shots.
