Reason number 79 why I love my Dodge Ram
« on: June 08, 2013, 08:16:04 PM »
In 120,000 miles the only work I have ever had the dealer do was an axle seal (under warranty) and the front/rear diff fluids at 18K miles and transmission service at 70K.  Other than brakes and tires the truck still has all the original parts that Mother Mopar built her with.   Today I took it in to have the trans fluid changed before it makes a trip to Washington in a few weeks.  The Service Manager reminds me that the pinion seals front and back are still leaking like they pointed out 50K miles when they had it last.
It is so minor I never worried much about them, but now because Dodge is running a Lifetime Powertrain Warranty again.  My truck was purchased 4 years and 11 months ago he points out.  Then he tells me that because I am the original owner, and there is some evidence that I have been doing regular maintenance on the rig, that I qualify for this warranty.  So they are fixing both pinion seals for FREE.  And doing a tire repair and rotation for FREE.   This really just might be the last truck I ever buy.  But then just how would you improve on a red Mega 4x4 Hemi?    As Hammer would say "You can't touch this."  8)

Now who is gonna break the news to Nordie since he doesn't come around here no mo?

I can't stand seeing a grown man cry, so if he really starts in with the water works you can throw him this bone  .  .  .
the Service Mgr noticed that I had lost one center cap from my wheel.  He figured he would price one out for me and give me 20% off.  To his great surprise, it turns out 20% clocks in at a completely ridiculous $109 !!!    I told him thanks but no, I'll keep checking Pick a Part when I am there for something else.

Please be sure you make note of any good sig material.  Nordie was my best supply   >:D

Hope this won't be the kiss of death for your bearings.  With 120,000 miles of wear on the pinion bearings, I probably would have thought long and hard before I had someone mess with the pre-load. I've seen a bunch of pinion bearing failures after a pinion seal was replaced, especially on newer Dana's.  Not always though, so maybe you should burn some incense, do a couple shots of Fireball,  or sacrifice a bucket of KFC in honor of the bearing God's just to be safe!

Awww Dude yer harshing my mello   :o
It would be a terrible thing if they had to rebuild my old running gear that has 120,000 miles on them with all new parts wouldn't it?

Seriously though, I am not familiar with the problem you describe.  I will be sure and discuss it with them on Monday.  I do have the Danas front and back on my truck I do believe, but I would hope that a dealership that has been in business for over 40 years would not make a mistake as simple as that.  I know they work on a lot of trucks.

I remind you Mopar owners are not saddled with the weaknesses that bowtie owners have come to accept as standard operating procedures.

Good to know, thanks Brandon.    But dang, don't tempt me with a good time.   I do have a 70 Coronet that is gonna get the full monty one of these years.  I am so in lust with the 472 cu in fuel injected, distributor-less Hemi's that come out of a place in the SF bay area.  Pure automotive porn right there baby!

I don't think I'd have love for any vehicle that started leaking at 70K miles.  That would piss me off.  My chevy didn't start leaking till about 130K, but it was a $3,000 truck so that's OK.  The Toyota just sprung it's first leak at 226K miles.  I love my toyota.

Funny you bring that up.  My neighbor has a 2005 Dodge truck....cracked dashboard and all.

At some point...right before the warranty expired, the rear pinion seal was replaced under warranty.  Then about 5K miles later, the bearings were replaced because it started howling.  Then later, it started howling again, so I tore it apart to see WTF.   Apparently "factory training" does not cover the correct use of a drift punch to extract bearing races without beating the shit of the bearing fits in casting, so when the new races went in, the inner race deformed over the punch marks that stood proud of the fit bore, and the front race knocked all the chips off on the way in and never really made it all the home in the fit bore...because it had casting chips behind it.  Great Job Mr. factory trained Dealer "tech".

I fixed it

The "leak" was so minimal that it was more like a mist.  Never enough to have even a drop end up on the driveway in all of that time between 70K and 120K.
I mentioned the concern about pre-loading the gears correctly and the SM says "well then we will have to replace the entire pumpkin under warranty huh?  Don't worry, this isn't my guy's first day on the job."    I'm not gonna lose too much sleep over it.  But it is going to the Canadian border and back in a few weeks, I guess I'll know soon enough if there is going to be a problem.

coming for a visit?????

Just a fly over I'm afraid.  LAX to Anchorage, then 3 weeks later Juneau to Seattle.  I have a buddy who is driving my truck to Seattle, visiting his elderly mother, picking us up from SeaTac and then we are driving to Portland so my wife and buddy Matt can cover an organic beer festival for Beer magazine, then we are driving to Bend where I am visiting cousins and they are covering another show called Spirit-palooza or some crazy thing that is supposed to result in an ad campaign for the owner of Crater Lake Vodka.  Then we are stopping in Shasta to check on my property for a bit to take some measurements and repair a fence, and then on to either Yosemite or SLO depending on a which house an old friend happens to be staying at  Leaving day after tomorrow and not coming back until July.
