bahner vs tahit day cruiser?
« on: September 03, 2014, 07:43:11 PM »
So I've been working on my Tahiti mini day cruiser. Needs a lot of work...stringers, floors, transom....dash.
my question is,  should I continue with project or buy another Hull?
I've got a line on a bahner....looks identical to mine from what I can see in pics.  Would the bahner retain more value than the Tahiti. Both boats are mini day cruisers...21'.
not sure how much, if any work is needed on bahner... so I'll assume It's as bad as my Tahiti. Considering that all repairs were done, on either boat, which would hold more value?
I hear lots of good things about bahner..... more than Tahiti(of this model)
any thoughts??

There were a lot more Tahiti's made.
Not exactly the best boats ever made but made well for there intended purpose.
Bahner was just splashing everyone else's good hulls.
I'd pick the one that needed less work.

It is my preference to lean toward the Bahner. I have owned two and honestly, extremely well built boat. If the company and business dealings were as good as their hulls, they would still be building great boats.  It basically boils down to personal preference.

i understand what you guys are saying.  obvious choice would be to pick the one that needs less work.  could very be the bahner, ill see soon.
i was trying to come up with some justification of getting into buying another hull....dealing with space/storage, transferring all the rigging...not to mention getting the hull here as trailer was not included in price.  i fully understand, you very rarely get back what you put in to toys/boats....  so i was curious as to which of the two brands usually sell for more....or at least hold their value.

If you don't have any emotional attachment to either boat, I'd have to agree on going with the one requiring least amount of work.  I believe that after these boats have passed through multiple hands, the value is in the condition of the boat and what's in the boat more than the name on the side. There are a few exceptions where the name alone adds value.  Bahner is a good name, but your talking about a 30+ year old boat.

having owned both a tahiti 18 and a bahner 21... the tahiti is the lesser of the two.  bahner has much better quality fiberglass work, attention to detail, etc.  the tahiti was almost "thrown together" is if they were trying to crank them out as fast as they could.  some areas in the bilge had 1/2" thick pools of resin that add absolutely 0 strength to the hull.  it was flimsy, the deck shook, hell the whole boat shook when you'd get in mild chop.

look at this video... im in some fairly GOOD water and you can see my seat bases wobbling around.  keep in mind this is a brand new floor, brand new seat bases fiberglassed to teh floor, etc.  i did some things to improve it, full stringers, bulkhead, gunwale supports, etc but it was NEVER close in comparison.

my bahner is solid as a rock compared to the tahiti.

i dont want to discourage you from the work you've already done and moving forward in your project.  but pretty soon the season will be over and there will be a giant flood of project hulls at dirt cheap to work with.  good hulls like rogers, hallets, spectras, etc.

Jarvis .. if youre talkin about the hull that was listed a little while back, I'd jump on it if its as fair as the pictures claim it to be.
I have the same exact boat, different interior layout than was in that one. A ton of storage in the bow. I can pack pretty much everything under the bow, will still ride smooth and easy to get on plane.
Have had Sleekcraft, Hawaiian, Baker/Stoker boats and this one by fsr rides the best.

thank you gents!
thats pretty much what i was expecting to hear about those two hulls.  .......................HOWEVER......... .

i just came back from visiting the guy and the boat.  very cool dude by far.  but the hull is not a bahner.   :-\
HIN says it to be a wet and wild boat.  never heard of them.  upon looking them up....they were in san dimas and like many manufacturers...are out of business (from the info i can find)

hull did look ok, all things considered.  full stringer boat. those appear to be solid for the most part.  transom had a bad spot by adapter cutout on driver side and entire floor needs to be replaced.  with all that....its a leg up from my tahiti...which needs all the above plus full transom, stringers, which were 1/4 length, dash, gunwale supports...the whole 9.

im a little disappointed it didnt turn out to be a bahner....or even an ultra as he thought it may have been one or the other.
maybe wet and wild boats were good....who knows?  upon inspecting it....it did seem to have a better looking layup than my tahiti.  like ka0tyk said.....mine looked rushed....quite a few larger areas that glass was dry, no resin. came right up. anyway.

H20Nut21Bahner, yes...hull was listed on here a short time ago.  started as a full boat for sale, then got parted out.  listed as 21 foot bahner.  red boat.

ill search some more on this company.  thanks to all for the insight!

That sucks it turns out to not be a Bahner. But I say if you like the way it looks, it looks to be the same or less work and looks solid to you. I'd hop on it

Wow .. sucks that it's not a Bahner. From the pictures that were listed, looked to be a spitting image of my boat.
I need the bimini frame odf that boat! Hahah

Boats that age, are generally just a name plate.
They were all just a splash of another hull.
That being said, I'd pick the one that was laid up better.
Regardless of brand.

copy that!  the 'new' one is definitely a better layup than my tahiti.  and about 8 years newer.  just wish i could find something regarding that brand.  its as if no one has heard of them at all.

What's there to know?
There were thousands of start ups.
If they had built some sort of end all be all hull, we'd still be talking about it.
Just another solid cruiser that was left behind.
