If you have the motivation to restore it and its structurly sound, yes, its worth it.

I would hate to see this left at the dump to die. No matter how bad a boat is cosmeticly, i will never promote it to be destroyed.

I would hate to see this left at the dump to die. No matter how bad a boat is cosmeticly, i will never promote it to be destroyed.

99% of the jet boats that were made are sellable at about 3 - 5K, looking and running good. It costs far more than 3 - 5K to get 99% of the jet boat projects out there to look and run well enough to get that 3 - 5K selling price. So unless there is sentimental value or value in that particular boat's history, I don't see how any jet boat project is worth it. In my generalizations I'm not including those few boats out there that are different, like my friend's Eliminator that he put 25K into and sold for 11K, or another friend who's probably put 30K in his jet boat and probably couldn't get 5K for it, I'm talking about your average jet boat here. A AFU Hallet is very average.

The more jet boats that are destroyed the more the rest of the jet boats that weren't destroyed are worth. Seen the value of a '69 Camaro lately? I remember a time when you could buy a '69 Z28 Camaro for less than 2K.

My .02 is if you like throwing cash in the trash then buy it, if you don't like throwing cash in the trash, buy a jet boat that's already done.   ;)

Sh*t, i got my boat just before Parker, havent even heard it run yet. Its alot of  work just getting these "turn key" boats running. If you have the facilities, time and money then have at it. If you are good with your hands and know people like Rod and Mark who go thru a buttload of parts you could resarect the old girl. I like saving them from the boneyard too, have had three in less than a year.

This seems to be a split debate as you can see....weigh out your options and go with it.

My Tahiti is getting close to being done. It not about the $$$ its about the love for classic boats and my hobby. I am not in the business of buying and selling boats. just having projects to keep me busy and seeing them resurrected from the dead and not go to a junk yard. When I see a boat in bad shape I try and think of what it looked like when it was brought home  back in the day and all the fun someone had with it and what it can be again.  Its a labor of love

If there's a usable intake under the boat and the trailer is easily repairable, that alone makes it worth $200 I think.

Nothing wrong with that. When I was younger (read much less responsibilities) I went through many cars and many thousands of dollars never to be seen again, which was fine for that time in my life. But now, hell no. Restore that '73 Duster with a slant 6 and it'll cost you 20K, restore that '69 Dart GT with a HiPo 340 and it'll cost you 20K, which one are you going to love more? I'd rather spend my cash on something that will be worth something when I'm done. Frock it, buy it, put 25K into it, keep it until your family has 5 in it, it'll be too small, and then sell it for $4K because it was rebuilt so long ago and because run of the mill jets have low resale value's.  ???  You can spend the 25K on a standard issue $200 Hallett project boat, or you can spend slightly more in the original purchase price on a newer open bow jet project which will get you a lot more of your cash back and it'll take that much more to grow out of.   ;)  As far as a Labor of Love, remember that love is blind so maybe we should all be rebuilding 40 year old never heard of brand jets and never get a top speed out of the thing because it handles like crap compared to later models.   ;D

If there's a usable intake under the boat and the trailer is easily repairable, that alone makes it worth $200 I think.

The intake is worth about $50, the trailer is worth about $200 without paperwork and with useable tires, the hull is worthless (as it sits) and will cost you $35 - $50 to dump at the dump, so looking at it from a purely investment type of deal it's worth about $150 - if your time has no value to you. Where this boat is worth it's purchase price I have no idea. It would be undisputable that open bow jets have a better resale value, will cost about $1000 more in initial "project" price, will cost the exact same amount in restoring it (except the uhpolstory will be a couple hundred more, and will be worth more when it's done.

Buy it, measure twice cut once, and make it an open bow.   O0

I'd at least go look at it . Hallett made some very impressive hulls . They were generally on the heavier side but at the same time they would take what ever you could throw at them . If you did most of the work and really were in no hurry to finish it , those better hulls are worth more when complete . I dont care what hobby your into , You can never make money on your projects . The ones you do are few and far between .

I had a 20' saguaro sit for about a year and a half while I gathered a ton of parts . I ended up being talked out of putting money into it even though it was a splash of a beisemeyer. I had tanks , jet , motor , exhaust , and ton of other odds and ends . I wasn't anywhere near putting it together so I looked around and found a turn key Hallett 210 for under 5k . Not a single hole in the upholstery and the gell was just a little oxidized .

The guy was right , why put money into a hull that isnt going to be worth anything after its done . So here I am backing a truck full of money to my hallett. We all know money is an issue so it's a matter of how time do you have and how much of a project are you ready to take on . By the way , you can sell the trailer for $200 at least .

If you're looking for a project, go for it. A boat is not an investment..... it doesn't matter if you restore one, buy it new, or find one with little use, you won't make money on it. What offsets the money you put into it is the enjoyment you get out of it. If you're a bean counter and can't equate an ROI to an intangible like enjoyment, don't buy a boat.

Incorrect.

No, it is correct. If you truly DO invest (invest to make a PROFIT, not just spend money), you wouldn't buy a boat where the potential for profit is slim to none. Unless you're a boat broker, you are not an investor. Between purchase, restoration, maintenance, registration (all the "normal" expenses of boat ownership), it's a loser financially. Slice it, dice it, it doesn't matter, it's still a loser.
Title: Re: Hallet hull with trailer $200
Post by: hotrod56cars on May 16, 2007, 08:53:06 AM
A boat is exactly like any other potential investment. You can spend 20K on a '69 Malibu 2 door or 20K on a '69 Malibu 4 door and the resale is significantly different. You can spend 500K on a Mobile Home or 500K on a house and the resale is significantly different. Boats are no different.

When you have spent that 20K on that 4 door or that 500K on that mobile home, they will always be a 4 door or a mobile home and have resale value's as such. They will both offer enjoyment, but will never be worth what you had spent.

So I guess if you don't care if you buy smart, don't care you'll never get even close to what you spent, unrealistically plan on keeping that boat for the next 50 or so years, then maybe it's worth throwing that cash away for the enjoyment of throwing that cash away in your 4K boat.

Au contrare

I profited $1750 on boat #1, I made $500 on boat #2, I lost $175 on boat #3 but gained an extra tandem trailer which I could easily and quickly sell for $400, I could easily make $600+ on that family boat I just boat. I have owned 4 boats so far and have made $ on every one of them (if I decide to sell a trailer). There's people out there that make their entire living off of buying and selling boats.

In the examples you made, the margins are too slim to truly be called "investments'. An investor moves his money to where it has the highest return, not just where he hopes he won't get burned. Playing at boats is fine (and what this thread is about), but let's not confuse a hobby with investing.

rod and roost, i think you both are miscommunicating.

Rod, you turn boats around, maybe put a little elbow grease into it and make a little cash.

Roost is talking about doing a full restoration.....putting lots of time and money into a boat to make it a full running boat that looks great.

In Roosts case, he is correct, its no different then restoring a hot rod. You will never get back the money, blood sweat and tears put into it.

In Rods case, yes, you can buy someone elses headache, fix the problems, put some elbow grease into it and sell it for a bit more.......or buy it, and part it out on ebay......and come out on top.

The intake is worth about $50...

fifty bucks? Show me where the fifty dollar intakes are stashed. I see where you have 4 boats under your belt, but please...

There are people that make a living on buying and selling boats, but not many do it on the old and small crap that we mess with here. It's big boats where there's always a buyer. People with money. People that buy big boats, as a general rule, always have money no matter what the economy is like. THAT is where you can make a good chunk of change turning a boat.

The boat trader, ebay, craigslist and all the other outlets are stuffed full of boats being dumped by people, the average guy, already feeling the pinch of things starting to go upside down, not to mention the price of gas. Now is not the time to try to turn a boat for a profit, I just bought another boat yesterday and the owner came down a bunch to make the deal with me. Stuff is not moving. But now is a very good time to buy a boat because of that. It's a good buyers market right now (it's always a buyers market in the boat biz. When times are tough all builders will bend over backwards to get the sell and you can grind on them to get what you want. When times are good, if the builder you're working with won't deal, there's another one down the street that will...everybody's busy and everybody's happy)

Back to the original question, that thing is worth at least 200 bucks if that's the kind of project you're looking for. But no one has mentioned the shape of the bottom. That's the single most important thing to worry about, not only on this basket case, but any boat. If the bottom's good, the rest is cake.  ;)

Oh yeah, who in their right mind would restore a 1973 Duster with a slant 6 much less sink 20 grand into a post 1971 car?  :D

fifty bucks? Show me where the fifty dollar intakes are stashed. I see where you have 4 boats under your belt, but please...

This seems to be debated....I have a WTB post on hotboat looking for a rounded keel intake and I have got offers in the post and via PM for intakes from $125 to $300.....but if you look on ebay right now, theres one for $56....and another went for $15 the other day. Though I am not pressed for time to get an intake since the wriedt is far from setting the pump back up......but I am in the market for one and I find it funny how skewed the prices are depending on where you look.

Same goes with boats.....I personally think many boats on hotboat's spam section are overpriced. Yes, there are a few deals you can find in there, but nothing that makes everyone scramble for their wallets. I understand why hotboat's spam section is overpriced and that would be the first place I would sell a boat if I was trying to make a buck.

Its on craigslist where you find rare odd deals because the owners either dont know what they have or just dont care and want it gone.

Bottom line - the market is very skewed on pricing of boats and/or parts. It all depends on where you look.

I hear ya. Different cars for different folks. I'm just not a big fan of anything post '71 except for a few chevy trucks. And I've never warmed up to anything mopar except for my uncle's '65 4 speed formula S Barracuda that he bought brand new and still has. Still has the original silver paint with the black strip down the center. For some reason I love that car and am still waiting for my chnace to buy it, fat chance there. Even most mopar guys think that's one of the uglest things ever made. lol

That means I get to gas and oil it and keep it turn key for the bitches and thats just another thing I dont want to do while i am relaxing/having fun at the lake. I was thinking about buying a old school stand up jet ski and watching them try and ride it all day and keep falling down. Is that wrong?? I dont think so.

If I lay out $200 and get $400 back, that to me is an investment. I really don't give a rats asss what the actual dollar amount is, if someone buys anything with the intent to profit from it - "it" is an investment. Does cash buy arrogence?

The guy that puts 20K into a Duster with a slant 6 is the same guy that would buy an awesome Eliminator jet, dump 25K into it, and barely be able to sell it for 11K.

50 dollar intakes are everywhere if you know where to look. I just sold a perfect intake for a Jacuzzi for $20 a couple of weeks ago. I have an entire pump with the intake I'll sell anyone right now for $100.

I may be wrong on what goes wrong in a Ford 460 when the pushrods are too long, but I am not wrong on the above statements, except on how arrogence is aquired.

So hotrod, after your own description of what you sell and make a profit on, I'm still confused why you don't think this old hallett is a good deal. I would think it'd be right up your alley. There's way more than 200 bucks worth of parts on that hull. I've seen a set emblems sell for more than a hundered bucks. Ebay changed everything, crap that you couldn't give away will almost always sell now. I'm amazed at what people buy on there.  Maybe the hull isn't worth saving, maybe it is, can't tell from looking at a picture on the net, but when you look at the sum of the parts, foot pedal, intake, trailer, st contol, fuel fills, tanks and so on it's a good deal for someone that is into that kind of selling.

I think the only one showing a little arrogance here is you. Someone who wanted to could easily double their investment with this deal, like you have. But it seems you're above that with this one?
Title: Re: Hallet hull with trailer $200
Post by: hotrod56cars on May 19, 2007, 11:58:19 AM
Here we go again, I've rubbed old rigger the wrong way, again!   ???

Not enough parts in the Hallet. Yes, I'd make a profit. I've never watched the emblems sell so I have no idea what they're worth. The hull costs $50 to get it gone, the trailer's worth $200 (minus that previous $50 makes it $150), the intake maybe $50, foot pedal about $30, I haven't sold a steering control yet (but will soon, but it's an odd looking control ?), I haven't run across fuel fills worth selling yet, tanks are a hit or miss depending on the dimensions.

Ouch. I'd rather buy a $1000 boat, make $1000 profit, than buy a $200 boat and make a $200 profit.

Besides, my yard is now officially full and I have no room left until I go through the boats I've got.

Have a wonderfull day.   ;D
Title: Re: Hallet hull with trailer $200
Post by: old rigger on May 19, 2007, 02:09:47 PM
trust me, you didn't rub me the wrong way. We're talking about boats here and there's nothing being discussed anywhere on the boards that leaves a lasting impression on me. I just like talking about boats, what Ive seen and done and what I say is only my very narrow opinion basied on my limited experence.

Having said that, you were the one that said..."If I lay out $200 and get $400 back, that to me is an investment. I really don't give a rats asss what the actual dollar amount is, if someone buys anything with the intent to profit from it - "it" is an investment. Does cash buy arrogence?"

So to me at least you're contradicting yourself a little. Bottom line is I think it's a good deal for the right guy, you don't. Who's right, it's doesn't matter. Hell the guy that started the thread even lost interest and gave up on it.  ::)
Title: Re: Hallet hull with trailer $200

I think that there is more involved in just moving the salvagable parts. What about your time spent in picking up the hull, removing the parts, being available for would be buyers? The gas used to transport the boat home etc. It all adds up. This is of course if nothing goes wrong bringing the heap home (such as trailer problems, tickets for non working lights etc)
All that shit in hopes for a 200 dollar profit. No thanks, I'd pass too.

well I look at it this way. I can go buy a $4000-$5000 boat turnkey. It will still not be "perfect" and I am buying the word of the seller on the motor, pump, parts condition, worth, and whoever built it actually know what they were doing. Like I said before THIS IS NOT A MONEY THING it is a fun project with a great outcome if done with patience and the right combination of parts. I think Beerjet was commenting that he does not even know what his engine has as far as internals. (sorry if I quoted the wrong person). My Tahiti cost me $600 with full stringers and a brand new pump with reciepts. I am up to $6000 with fiberglass, and engine so far but..... it is all brand new and I either did it myself or am having a professinal do things in front of me. I have the reciepts, the build sheets etc. and I do not plan to sell for a very long time. So the project is a beautiful turn key reliable boat that I know the complete history of I feel better about traveling and having people and friends enjoy the boat if I am far from home etc. My interoir will be brand new, engine brand new and pump. If I get 5-10 years of family enjoyment with a boat that I built myself the extra money for having a fresh ride built my way does not matter. I am sure that there are better conditon of hulls than that Hallet but it is a classic hallet that people would appreciate and like alot if completed correctly. I guess I look long term instead of immediate financial aspect when I see a boat like that.

well I look at it this way.

The 4- 5 thousand range in jet boats typically has nothing to offer but crap. By the time you are done with a 4 thousand dollar gem you will have 9 grand in it. The best way to buy a boat and not loose your ass is to spend the money first. Buy from reputable people and perferably buy a boat that you know the history on.
A boat like that Hallet will soak the money out of you more so than if you bought one that's already done. I'm talking a quality one in the 10,000 plus range.
The good thing about buying a beater boat (such as the Hallet) is that you can spend the money at your own pace. This seams to be easier for some people rather than saving for it. Sad thing is that you have to spend a few summers on the beach until your project is done  :-\

My income along with my G/F's income is about $3900, our mortgage is $3200 a month, we've got 4 kids, and all the bills everybody else has. At any given time I might "put in" ? 6 hours of work to make $100, as a last resort which I do often. That Hallett to me is a last resort, I'm willing to "waste" the time and effort of making that $200 profit if there is nothing else going on (income wise). Right now, I've got a few other things going on to make up the difference on the income so at this particular time the Hallet isn't worth it to me, but in two weeks - you never know (should be: I never know).

I laughed when I read old rigger's post of his "limited experience". That was funny sh!t.

I think bluenun's opinion, in my opinion, is a healthy opinion (that's a lot of opinion's) as far as building a jet boat that you're planning on keeping a long time. But if you're not quite sure if you're going to like your own jet boat or how long you're going to keep it, or if you're going to have to sell it to get cash, I think the $4K - $5K boat might be the ticket to figuring it out. keep that same $4K - $5K boat for too long and like Quickjet said the next thing you know you've got $9K in that same boat and still could only sell it for $4K - $5K.

If that Hallet sits aroung long enough, I'm sure sooner or later I'll have to get my hands on it.   :-\

That $4,000 dollar range is mixed with crap and jewels... problem is, few will agree on which is which. If I sold the Stevens for $4,000, one person would value it one way for what it IS, another for it's condition, and another still for the sum total of it's parts. Is it crap? Not to me, and probably not to someone that likes Stevens'. Someone looking for a hull with greater speed potential, or a modern engine might think that $4K is crazy talk.
I paid $3800 for the Circus boat in 2002, with a junk pump, engine and interior. Was it crap? Not to me, as I wanted an open bow jet and factored the repair costs into it. Here again, some would think I was insane spending that kind of money for an open bow, but it had a greater value to me. Of course, NOW that it has thousands more in it, it's value to me is less monetary, and probably more emotional.
The bottom line for ME (and only me) is that the VALUE I have for my boats will undoubtedly will be different than someone else's.
Hell after thinking about.......
Anyone want to buy an Advantage open bow or a Stevens flat bottom jet?????   ;D

It's a 1965 STevens flatbottom jet with a Ford 390 FE and Berk JA. Here's a thread on HDF with a few pics (http://www.havasudoug.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?s=7a08e55824da5e150ec1565f5117d8e1;act=ST;f=16;t=7136)
