I know this has more than likely been covered many times but I sure can't find it so here goes. I'm look for a good handheld GPS unit. Does anyone have any good suggestions? I don't have room on my dash for an installed GPS speedometer.

Hey Greg I'm using the Garmin Etrex Legend , its blue and waterproof works good and is small. I bought it at Wally world for 120.00 Mark

Just another little bit of info, May or may not be of any interest to anybody here but I did buy the bluewater charts from Garmin also. I can download charts to the handheld for offshore fishing. Pretty cool for finding wrecks, rock piles and the like and marking them if its a honey hole and going back to them at another time jus my 02 Mark

I purchased one at christmas time from www.tigergps.com with good results.
For the one I was looking for they had the best price.

GPS is in the cell phone and in the truck for that part. ;) :D

The local maps were already on mine. I even have taken it with me on a couple of trips to sacramento. Was a trip the first time I took it to the sandbar and turned it on for the hell of it. Didnt see any roads but I could see the bend of the river where the sand bar is, was pretty cool

Hey Greg that is the one im using and is easy to use and like I said the inland maps were already loaded. even used it when I drove to SAC a couple of times to visit relatives. For ME the thing I like is how small it is :D Mark

Well, Mark it's on its way so I'll get some time playing before I take it out in the boat. I like the fact that it's small and I can use it in both the boat and the car. Greg

Another interesting fact I would like to mention is that when you use it in your vehicle you may see that the speed on your speedometer doesnt match what is on the GPS. The GPS is RIGHT the speedo will be the one that is off. Cars and trucks can be off 2 to 4 %. Motorcycles can be up to 10% mark

I already know my SUV's speedo is off by about 4 or 5 MPH. I'm going to take it in to Ford and see if they can set it correctly. This thing may be a lot of fun to play with.

Yes it definately will be fun to fool around with. Something else to think about...... if your speedo is off on your vehicle and you have a warranty on it......hmmm.....does that mean your warranty expires sooner than it should have ??? ??? YUP sure does :mad: Another thing about fixin a speedo I had heard that some are programable and some arent, but i dont know that for sure Mark

Well, I don't worry about the warrant any longer. This is a 2000 model and that is long gone. :)

I hear ya on the warranty thing, but to give you an example....anyway ;D ;D lets say your speedo says you are doing 65 mph and your GPS says 61 mph, its a 4 hour drive to the river, the GPS is right so you just put 16 miles one way on your "odometer" that shouldnt be there, 32 miles round trip. That can add up quick. Of course you would adjust up or down according to speed. But it could affect either the warranty or resale value because of mileage. Just my 02 Mark

i use the garmin gps map series hand held. they are waterproof and have a lot of options. i use it on my dirtbike in my buggy in my truck and in my boat. and in my rv if i am lost i love that thing.

They are awesome in a car. I haven't seen a better built in GPS unit on brand new cars. The one that comes with the Lincoln sucks, lexus sucks, cadillac sucks, Mercedes is a little better, BMW is the better of all of them. But these two are real lifesavers! At $500 it's really worth it as far as full function vehicle navigation systems are concerned.
