455 OLDS?????????

So i have found me a old Spectra that is real nice. But it has the 455 olds in it. I have heard nothing but horror stories on these, I can switch the engine later, But am curious how much HP they put out? Mark

they arent bad if you just want to cruise around the lake and stuff....great dependable motors.

now if you want to squeeze hp out of it and go fast, i dont suggest doing it.

my dad had a tahiti with an olds in it....had it for like 10 years and only changed the oil in it....he sold it to this guy and he put ot headers, tunnel ram, etc on it.....blew it up his first trip out.

The only issue with the Olds is in their oiling system, otherwise they are great engines. You can get some serious reliable HP out of it once the oiling mods are made. They were offered in several different HP combinations so it's not that easy to get a HP number on it. Most of the stock Olds marine engines put out bigger HP and torque numbers than most of its competitors of the day. What year is the block, that should give you an idea of it's piston type (assuming it's stock internally). Which heads are on it? Is there a tag on the bellhousing?

An Olds can be built to last if done right.
But for real power potential and aftermarket options, Chevy or Ford.

Check out realoldspower.com. There is a boat section there with some very experienced people.

What are your plans for the boat? Is it a good enough deal that would make the engine swap worth
the price you are paying for the boat?

So I went to go look at it and it is really clean, but the guy switched the manifold and put a double pumper on there and is having overheating problems?

? I think he put the manifold gasket on wrong? Any thoughts?

If he swapped a factory intake for an aftermarket intake he may have used the same gaskets the stock intake would use which is a valley pan. You don't want to use a valley pan gasket with an aftermarket intake on a Olds V8. However, I don't believe that would make it overheat. If the Holley is running really lean it will run hotter than normal, not a condition you want to run for very long. Maybe he swapped the intake manifold and the new used intake has a thermostat in it? Need more info. How is your jet boat overheating, what's it doing to make you think it's overheating?

He seems to think it is running lean, its weird though cause one of the manifolds gasket is thicker then the other. I made an offer on the boat and he accepted, The trailer alone is worth the 5k. It is a triple axle ellis trailer fully boxed frenched led lights chrome fenders, thick bunks and full cat walk, I will post some pics after I go pick it up next weekend.

Socal Olds motors have (and will) run well and provide great service as long as they are run/driven conservatively We build and service several a season and have good sucess,there are lots of tips and ticks to make these motors last . The over heating complaint could be several diffent things as I'm sure you realize ,please feel free to call if we can guide you with a diagnosis and help you test this boat once you have it ! Maybe there is a vaccum leak at the manifold or carb, that could be the lean issue. Also, if he gooped RTV around the water passages, debris could be clogging the colling.

I personally think he used the wrong gasket and is blocking the water inlet, I also think the carb needs to be re-jetted?
