Post by: Nordie on November 25, 2010, 10:04:40 AM
And heres the story....so i am housesitting for nordic454 (brandon)....7:30 im out of bed getting my morning started when all of a sudden every god damn smoke alarm starts going off in the house....immediately i spring into action...i start checking every corner of the house...nothing...check the attic...nothing....alright no fire no smoke...one big 200 hundred plus pound dog that is in the fetal posistion soiling himself...time to pull batteries cause something is array....nothing changes....ok time to call brandon whos in atlanta that his smoke alarms are going off and if it has ever happened before...hes like whatttttttttttttttt.....i said dont worry no fire....ok ok...so i kill the power to the house...ahhhhhhh nice n quiet....so i turn back on the power and were good...so i take tank dog for a walk to settle the nerves a little...and stop by my friend steves (who lives a street over) for a cup of coffee...phone rings its the gf...she yells do you hear this shit...ahhhh damn they are going off again...so me and tank spring into action....we get to the house and i head up the driveway and tank dog stops dead in his tracks...looks at me and i know what hes thinking....something along the lines of...if you think im going up there you effing nuts dude...ok tank...i tie his leash up to my hitch of my truck and kill the power to the house....turn it back on and silence...ok screw this time to goto walgreens...i coax tank dog inside and tell the already angry gf what to do if it happens....i get to walgreens at 8:30...only to find that they dont open till 9...fml...so i head back to brandons only to find that steve is outside...so i stop and talk to him until i can goto walgreens....so at walgreens i get two cans of compressed air and 5 batteries....and a red bull....the cashier rings up the batteries 5 times toooo many...i was like ummmmmmm...so she voids it 4 times then proceeds to put away all the batteries...i was like ummmmmmm....by this time the lady behind me is in tears...10 after 9 i am home to a really pissed off gf and a tramatized dog...and she yells...the power is off...ok....then she yells i got a effing headache...ok...so i just cleaned all the smoke detectors and new batteries...so far so good....now i get to proceed to going to a mormon dinner with her family...im pouring my first drink as of now....

Needless to say happy thanksgiving to all...and may your day be better then mine

not to worry you......but you should check to see if you got a carbon monoxide leak or something dude....

i dont know shit about smoke detectors especially if they are wired up serially......but if its not just one, but ALL of them going off...that to me would say theres more of an issue then a dirty sensor or a low battery.

better safe than sorry.

If I'm not mistaken I think if one goes off it will set the rest off. Correct me if I'm wrong. Hope your day gets better dude. Sounds like you've got alot of room for improvement. Happy turkey day everyone.

Yeah we also checked for this....i checked pilot lights as well...but gas is detectable by smell...carbon monoxide is not though....the problematic detector i believe to have been in their office...upon replacing batteries that detector started going off again when the others didnt...when i hit the reset button it stopped....with fresh batteries and the cleaning they have been guiet for almost 2 hours...also unmentioned was i had opened the back door for tank to go in and outside....

Well, I guess I'm not the only one this stuff happens too!  ;D

Yes, those detectors are designed  to all go off if one goes off. Could be batteries, but if they're at or beyond the 5 year point (Manufacturers say 10 years, which is BS, at least here in arrid environments), time for Brandon to invest in some new detectors. All of 'em. Finding the one thats causing it is futile for the 50 bucks or so for new ones.  ;)

Also, I know here in the PHX area, the local fire departments will come and check them out, and even replace them for you if you already have them, for free.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
