Yeah it was 29 Palms.  Great weather and even did an Easter egg hunt for the kiddies.

Nordie, if your buddy needs anything I have a friend that runs the Bultaco group on Yahoo groups.  Good guys with all the hot setups.

Next month Primm, lookout NV here come the old guys   :screwy:

Not sure yet Brad.  I know my partner is going and I will probably go along with or without the bike just cuz I love the rides at the casinos in Primm.
The bike quit running in a very strange way but I am going to look into it this afternoon.  Maybe someone on here might have a clue cuz I don't.  I overgeared a bit this race expecting many full throttle sections.  I had to hunt for the hard pack and stay out of the shallow sand in order to pull peak RPM.  Honestly I was worried about seizing the entire race as the bike was having to pull 300 lbs. below peak up long sandwashes.  About 20 miles into the race going up a slight hill it just started to "bog" and then finally just stopped pulling altogether.  After about 20 sec. I kicked it and it fired right up, no smoke or blubbering.  Tried to get back in the race but it just wouldn't pull me away from a stop.  After 3 or 4 more tries and letting it cool for a minute or two, it wouldn't start at all.  Back home I pulled the plug expecting it to be fouled but it doesn't look to bad.  Darker than it should be but not black, sooty or oily or wet.  It always ran good and crisp down low, it just wouldn't pull up into the last quarter of peak RPM's and finally at WFO it just slowly bogged almost like running out of gas but smoother, until finally just coming to a stop.    Any ideas from the "collective" ?

Air cooled bike you got her hot bubba! I know all them bikes when they get hot just flat lose their power and won't go anywhere....possibly smoked the clutch....if you were geared high you could have been using a lot of clutch to keep up your momentum....I would fire it up when you get home and see if you get the same result! Probably ready to change that gear oil as well!

The clutch was the only thing I could think of but it still engaged perfectly.  Lots of lever feel, held still in gear at idle etc.  New oil before the race too.  Definately wasn't slipping cuz I couldn't rev it high enough.  Also this race had plenty of downhills and even asphalt to cool things off a bit.  I am going to run it in a day or two in a nearby sandwash to see if I can replicate the problem when cool though.   Thanks for your input Nordie.   Anybody else?  I'm stumped.

sound like it got hot, how was the compression when trying to kick it over

Everything seemed normal, good to go.   Two or three times within 15-90 seconds after it dying on me, it fired up again first kick.  I was also running plenty of octane and it was a relatively cool day.

My boss puts on the 29 palms race. He is or was president of the hill toppers. I raced all big 6 races for 3 years straight up until last year. 29 palms has always been my favorite.

Does this old bike have reeds? If so they might be shot and need replaced.

No reeds.   Modern stuff has been made to work recently (V-Force) though.   Appx.  $600 w/ the porting to the piston.   Too rich for my blood.   Thanks for trying guys.
OG - this was a very well run event.  I was amazed at how many people it took to put this on.  Awesome course although I could have done without those little cement whoop-d-doo's.   I slammed them really hard the first time cuz I didn't know they were there.   Aced the mudhole that gave me nightmares all week too.
All those sandy 90 degree corners I just held it WFO and carved 'em like a flat tracker.   Very fun stuff.

Yeah I was tired enough after the first lap that getting thru those gates was kinda tough, I had a lot of trouble staying in the groove and there wasn't much room for error.
Check out this pic my cousin just sent me.  I have no idea how she got it but that was me on the same CZ back in about 1975 or so.  Damn I was skinny at 15!

thats awesome.  I have kinda the same story. my 85' 250r atc I've had my whole life my dad bought it new 4 months before I was born theres pics of me in a baby carrierbackpack thing at pismo on it when I was a month old, wish I had a scanner.  Ill never sell that bike. Im loving the fact that your still racing the vintage bike. I used to work for cyclestop and we specialized in restoring and racing vintage bikes. I've had quite a few, everything from a 80 cr 80 elsinore to a 74 cr125 elsinore to a 75 rm125 to a 1980 cr250 elsinore. I kick myself in the ass every day for selling the cr125 I have a set of OG white mugen plastics and tank in the garage, I just wish the original Mugen cr was with them...
