Title: how much time is needed on motor

so i got a fresh 454 in my boat. and i was wondering how much time you guys baby your motors until you just say fuck it and use it like a boat is supposed to be used. lol

I have one good weekend on mine so probably went thru two tanks of gas already. i am thinking of changing the oil one more time. then just running it. until i trade it out for the bigger motor that is.

anyway just wondering what you guys do when ya put  a new motor in

My engine builder told me to nail it as soon as I get out of the no wake zone! And if it breaks it's his fault and he would take care of it!!

So I did and all has been good ever since.

ya that is kind of what i did. putted out of the cove. took her up to 3k crused for a bit varying the rpm range. now i just drive it. i pulled a tube yesterday. and i was just wondering if i hurt anything by jumping the gun

I am no motor head but It is my understanding that it should be broken in like you are gonna drive it. If you baby it for very long and then nail it I bet it wont like it!

When I dynoed my motor, they did a "break in" for about 10 min of run time. Varied the RPM's.  We changed the oil, he made one half azz pull to make sure all was ok, then gave it hell. I say change your oil and your good to go. What oil do you run?

right now just non detergent 30 weight with zink to break in the cam. it is gettin changed on friday. what should i use. i think it is still too early to go to synthetic

I've run Synthetic in Moo since the engine was installed after the bench cam break in. Just changed out Pickle to the same stuff Moo's running, but I dun think you wanna run $125 a case Joe Gibbs stuff, do you? (worth it, IMO if you want to).

Solid, flat tappet cam, I'd be running what I am, else be adding zinc additive every time, and more frequent oil changes. Just me, I'm kinda new to these boats, but when I changed out the intake gaskets back in March, everything looked like new in there!

I have a case of the 10-30 joe gibbs hot rod oil in my garage , if you want it I'll let it go for cost and bring out on fathers day for you.

plus i might be buying a new boat this weekend.
