I normally tip within the normal range.

I usually double the tax....about 15/20% rule of thumb I think... ;D

i usually double the tax usually works out to be 15% unless i get really awesome service i will tip higher then doubling the tax....im a good tipper when it comes to good service....vegas is a messed up city for tips everyone wants one!

My favorite tips......
Plant your corn early.
Don't breath underwater.
Get out of the restaurant business.
Don't wake a sleeping dog.
Don't piss on a police car... :thumbup:
Otherwise, if the service was worth talking about (good or bad) that is how I try to gauge my compensation, if you sucked, the tip will reflect it, if the service was outstanding, they will get the tip I screwed the other peeps out of.... ;)
I will mention this just because I have friends in the business of food, if you do tip and are paying with a credit card, only put half of the tip on the card, make the rest in cash. :thumbup: If on the card it is all reported income. :sly:

I believe in Cali that wait staff is taxed by the state on "expected" tips. Money is taken from them based on their income because they know that these folks often under report their tips. If you stiff your waitress, she pays the state anyway. Just something to consider.
And X2 on Vegas. I hate the idea of having to tip everyone, and boy do they act pissed if you don't give 'em enuf.

most people before even stepping foot into their hotel have already tipped twice...once to valet, and once to bell-hop...this whole town in based on tips!

I know here they pay a tip compliance wether or not they make the tips they are paying for them..
Sometimes the waitstaffs actually pay to go to work when its slow...
With that in mind i tip fair " i think " and if service is good i tip well ;)
Attitude means alot in my wallet, so you better make me smile for that tip >:D

Exactly, they get taxed on 8% (not 15%) this is why the half and half deal. :thumbup:

No but I think that is a piss poor excuse.
I've been bitter ever since my sister in law (ex waitress) decided to take it upon herself and put in some amount that I hadnt agreed on.
That was her excuse, "They make there living off there tips!"
I told her "Its my tip. If you wanna give her a tip, tell her not to use a condom with holes, they dont work. "

The thing with the paid wages is that 99% of restaurants only pay minimum wage because they are counting on the waiters and waitresses making tips. So the actual pay checks are worthless. I worked at a tony romas for 6 months as a second job and if it wasnt for the tips i made the job wouldnt have been worth it. However, I do agree that they should simply be paid a higher wage and the tips shouldnt even be apart of paying.
Oh and you cant leave out the classic tip, dont eat yellow snow!

Knowing that money is going to come out of their pocket either way you would think that Servers would strive to give excellent service. :screwy:
I know a couple here in Vegas that their daughter was personally recruited/swiped by the owner of a major strip resort for one of the hotels resturants, she also make 100k+. There is something to be said for great service.
I dont tip for bad, slow or rude service, PERIOD! But I also tip more then 15% for good service and have been known for tipping well over the norm' for Excellent service.

I'm probably the wrong person to chime in on this, as I've been an obscene tipper when I receive adequate to great service. Some of you are witness to this. (I know how it works......). My fault is in not carrying cash very often and the damn debit card that they HAVE to declare. I try and offset this.
It is true, in the food beverage industry their minimum wage is nothing, based on the "tip" portion to make up at least the difference. I think, though, if I remember correctly, if a certain worker did NOT make the minimum wage for hours worked with their compensation and declared tips added for a certain period of time, the employers had to make up the difference. Dunno how thats enforced, but that is the law as I understand it. But as an employer, if I have anyone NOT making that minimum wage consistently, they are probably going to be promoted to customer very quickly.
Now, most bartenders and waitresses (Waiters) I know give excellent service. I recruited every outstanding one I could, and most of those were making far beyond what I can offer to start in retail. I know bartenders making ( some on, some off the books) in excess of $15 an hour for a part time gig.
Tip how you feel you should, but understand the system of their compensation and greed of their employer knowing that. Etiquette and some group of snobs that dine out every day in NYC cannot tell you what the magic percentage is and how to guage what.
