Been looking at some polish vids...I guess I changed my mind. I guess now my question is paint or powder coat?

I took a old dryer motor welded a threaded bolt on it put on a buffing pad mounted it to my bench. Bought a polishing bar (green one)and wd 40 and went to town on my engine mount, ride plate. First time polishing and it came out mirror finish. Wd 40 was the trick tho. Doing my intake trying to knock down the cast flashing should of sent it out pain in the ass sanding. If you have money to spend send it out.

ha. yeah. maintaining polished metal can get old. if you let it sit for too long....youll have more work cut out for you to bring back the "chine". this is where clear powder coating comes in...
i had a lead on a powder coater. (is that a word?) havent talked to him in awhile, but he used to give killer deals on black satin or gloss powder. ill see if i can reach him...get an idea for some of these parts....
stay tuned....til next time....same bat time.....same bat channel.... :screwy:

Just my $.02, I was too cheap to spend $150 to have J&M speedcenter polish my SBC Vortec PerformerRPM intake, so I spent over $300 on sanding rolls, flapper wheels, etc. and after days of grinding on it, it still wasn't anywhere near shiny. Of course then Edeljunk came out with an AirGap RPM the very next month and I had to buy a new intake. This time I spent the $150, but the polished mowed all the detail off of the casting.
After polishing all my boat aluminium, I had Embee spray it with their clear ceramic coating. It has lasted without dulling and doesn't turn milky like clear powdercoat. Techline Coatings makes a clear to put over bare polished metal and I am sure that Kings offers a similar process. If you hate polishing as much as I do, look into a clear coat.
Another alternative would be zinc coating. Embee did a really killer black zinc coating on Larry Merisch's top alcohol dragster induction.
Cheers,
Joe

Yeah I've done some mistakes like that too thinking why pay someone to do it when I can get it done for 20 bucks and a day. Never works out that way. I'll probably just take them in. Wanna do it together with my headers. Anybody know a shop that does both?

id agree with flusher. i havent had experience with clear powder or clear ceramic....but i can believe that the clear powder would change somehow. also....some times....it can be cheaper to do yourself....if you already own 90% of supplies for the job....otherwise tooling up can negate out sourcing it....unless you foresee doing the work multiple times. you know....
theres a spot down here that has done some polishing for me. Deans metal polishing. i had them do some porsche alloys for my bug some time ago. came out great. no clear coat of any kind. dont know if they offer it. also dont know if they will do headers. worth giving them a call. at the time they were easy to work with....dont quite remember....couldve been 60 or 110 per wheel to polish. that included stripping what paint was on them.
let us know which route you take.

Well what I meant was I need a place to get my headers ceramic coated and the covers possibly powder coated.

It's not so much that the powder coat changes as it is that it just doesn't look as brilliant as it does when it is freshly polished. When I worked at Pacific Coast Cobra, we polished and clear powder coated all the aluminum on the boss's SOHC 427. It looked really nice, but just didn't have that bling that bare polished aluminum has. Of course this was on a show car that never spent much time in the sun. I couldn't say if it would turn yellow.

Embee is good, sometimes. Heard a lot of smaller jobs go to shit. Long turn around times, lost parts, mega high pricing etc. then again that's just hearsay. I did call about ceramic coating my headers, $250 to strip and $500 to coat. Guess I didn't talk to the right guy. But other then that, the company is doing something right...

Sounds like somebody got a foot to the ass on that one. Shouldnt cost more that 300. Talk to owner Jeff and let him know it's for a boat deal. He will hook you up!

Glad it wasn't just me.
I've never had anything done by them but they do have a good reputation.

I was blown away. All good though, and they definitely have a reputation.
As for Jeff, I asked for him but he was busy.

Heard About a place in the ad area. I remember a fellow member taking his headers in and got them done. Great price and again from what I remember they also do powder coating. Wish he would chime in. He his profile pic is Jack Nicholson. Pretty sure that's how you spell it lol.

Embee did my headers and I don't remember the cost exactly, but I know they were less than $400.00. I think $300.00 sounds right. As far as I can tell, they did a very nice job, but they're black and I run them dry quite a bit so.....
-
you could shine up those valve covers fairly easy with an angle grinder and a polishing wheel and rouge, or a bench grinder with a wheel. mothers or any paste polish and an old sock is gonna take DAYS. the paste waxes are more for maintaining shine on something thats already polished unless you like torturing yourself for hours.

Hard to tell surface finish.... were they polished before?
