But I hate fords and mopars worse....
Spent the day cleaning chips and swarf outta the machine shop...got rid of a bunch of junk I've been moving around the shop for 5 years....as I rolled the trash bin out to the street after pouring myself an "end of weekend" drink...I notice a puddle under the truck. Fawk. Intake gaskets....5.7L R motor. Started the job at 6pm, finished at 9. My fatass still beat book time....with only a led light strapped to my head and no air tools (neighbors get pissed when I run 'em after dark). Kinda sore from climbing in and outta the truck all night. Why, after 40 years of building a SBC, can GM not figure out how to make intake gaskets not leak?

Pop's 96 intake has leaked a few times. The last time it had a problem the aluminum was eaten away on the manifold. Surfaced with epoxy, machined flat again, and a new fel pro gasket, been leak free for 100k. Don't know why GM made part of the manifold a water jacket.
They changed in 99, cause my 02 has a plastic intake and they don't screw up.

How else would they make money? Those private corporate jets don't fuel themselves!

you must have herd those stories, about the big 3 going to junkyards and looking at there cars and trucks, and all the parts that were still good on them. that they went in and made them with cheaper material. so they would not last that long anymore.

GM was aware of the intake manifold problems of those years. So the next newer generation of SBC was equipped with a manifold that can't leak. Case in point.

thats a case of a engineering flaw. thats just to expensive to go back and fix .so they wait till next run.

Mopar would have left you on roadside with vultures circling you long before the intake had a chance to drip. :thumbup:

Yeah, at least GM didn't decide to bury the back half of the engine underneath a cracked dashboard...that would have made the job a real bitch.
My neighbor has a dodge...2003, I just did the rear end....for the second time (the dealer job lasted 50k miles...due to a less than clean pinion race removal job, and failure to knock down
the chisel mark that stood proud of the bore), head gaskets and a valve a job months back....with less than 150k on it.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if it weren't for mopars my tools would rust.
I wish I could afford a tundra

As far as better intake gaskets for the "R" motor. Felpro and GM performance sell a paper type gasket that is a replacement for the plastic POS factory ones I must have replaced a train load back in the day. And checking the manifold for cracks or rot by the water gaskets is a good thing. ^-^
