Zebra, quagga mussels launch boat restrictions

Some vessels will be banned from six reservoirs to block invasive shellfish

The East Bay Municipal Utility District will restrict recreational boating
in six reservoirs to prevent the spread of two non-native mussels that have
caused havoc in waterways in many states, EBMUD officials announced
Thursday. Boats from Southern California as well as San Benito and Santa
Clara counties will be banned from using the six reservoirs -- some of them
popular recreational lakes. Also, local boats must pass EBMUD inspections
for quagga and zebra mussels before they will be allowed to enter lakes used
for drinking water. The new restrictions go into effect Feb. 1 at San Pablo,
Chabot, Briones and Lafayette reservoirs in the East Bay and Camanche and
Pardee reservoirs in the Sierra foothills.

Local boaters denied Northern Calif. access after mussel found

Recreational boaters from San Benito and Santa Clara counties will be denied
access to six reservoirs in Northern California, the East Bay Municipal
Utility District announced this week. The district made the decision hoping
to prevent the spread of zebra mussels - an invasive species that has the
ability to clog water pipes and choke out local aquatic life - which was
recently found in San Justo Reservoir just south of Hollister, the district
said. Beginning in February, boaters from outside California, Southern
California, and Santa Clara and San Benito counties won't be allowed to
launch on the six reservoirs. The quagga mussel, a close cousin of the zebra
mussel, was found in Southern California last year.Boats using the
reservoirs will undergo inspections before launching.Those waters include
Pardee and Camanche reservoirs in Amador and Calaveras counties; San Pablo,
Lafayette and Briones reservoirs in Contra Costa County; and Lake Chabot in
Alameda County.The invasive mussels can spread through recreational boating.
