ive been dealing with the airbag suspension in my expedition for like 3 months. i kept putting it off. the compressor would kick on over and over in the night, etc...
finally got around to doing it today

these old things didnt have much life left in them... one of em leaked for sure and i just poked the other one with my finger and it started leaking too.

the air suspension in these things is the main suspension for the truck. theres a ride height sensor and depending on how much you put in your truck (boat, or 50 boxes of hardwood floor) the truck pumps itself back to level. its a NICE feature.
-
Oh nice that sounds like it could come handy

They also make a coil conversion for no more air bag problems on these trucks.

now i got the "maintenance bug"
new shocks front and rear, new brakes, oil change, transmission fluid and filter change, coolant change...
(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ash4%2F302515_10151126649844833_1145143137_n.jpg&hash=d18e3367624044e3ec2680702ab3d758402c8582)
fun stuff. ive had like 8 mustangs previously and this is my first "truck"... i must say its WAAAAAAY easier to work on. i think i did the rear brakes and shocks in about an hour.
-
last of my "upgrades"... a common problem for f150/navi/expeditions is the blend door breaking. since its an expedition ive just been using the rear system for cooling and heating... why not, its twice as big. heh.
well its time to fix all of that.

You're crazy all that work to get rid of it

I sold a 7.3(worst thing I ever did was sell it)
I would steer clear of a 6.oh

Those years will need head studs, egr, oil cooler and a turbo. Will cost you 7 grand to make it a dependable runner.
I sold my diesel and went with a new Gasser because they are low maintenance as all hell and always work. My new truck takes hills slower and I can't smokescreen the civic behind me at the stoplight... I would take your expedition to the river pulling the boat over any stock 6.0
Don't let me taint your decision, just go online and read the horror stories.

yeah i know the 7.3's are the way to go over the 6 liters... and im not really wanting a v8 5.4 for such a large car (although ive had a few modular motors already and im VERY familiar with them), my MPG would be complete crap. and the v10 gets 10-12mpg on a good day realistically.... but the 03's and newer with the 7.3's are hard to find a clean runner with less than 200k... and i MUST have a 2wd in order to fit it into the parking garage at work.
the expedition is a great car but we usually roll to the lake with 4-6 people, 2 dogs, and a bunch of stuff. with 4 we usually end up taking out the 3rd row, and with 6 we end up using the boat as storage for everything. an excursion would make a nice upgrade without any sacrafices.
i hear the diesel excursions are getting almost 20-22mpg these days, is this true?
-
Keep your foot out of it, keep up on the maintenance and you would see probably 17-20 if your lucky on a bone stock 6oh(no) powerstroke. If your that die hard about it you could get a 04 excursion and swap in a 05-06 6.0 engine. 03-04's were the big problem child 05's were better but the 06 motor if I remember correctly had all the querks worked out. But if your lucky you can still find a 7.3 ex under 150k for around 10. There's one right now at a used lot right now for 13k and its got 90 on the od that belongs to the guy that owns the lot. Wifes in the air about it or it would be in my drive way. 7.3 would be the way to go 6ohs can be good motors if taken care of and have a few mods done to them. The 6.4 is hit an miss. $600 chip and tunes and your in the 600hp range with no other supporting mods but if your fuel system craps 12k just to repair it. And the 6.7 seems to be a great motor unless you mod the hell out of it then the pistons like to window the block.

Mr . KaOtyk.. I have the same heater prob with my 99 chevy. the dash needs to come out to replace the heater core... is it really that big of a deal or is it just a bunch of phillips head screws and some duct work.. i am a bit scared.. how many hours do you think you had in that job? Dont get me wrong i can turn a few wrenches ... just trying to get an idea.... thanks robbie

ive done 2 mustangs and now my expedition heater cores. its not difficult work, but it usually requires removing a LOT of stuff just to get back there. it helps if you can find a howto online so that you only remove whats required... i followed one that was a ford manual but someone had actually gone through and made edits with "skip this step, not necessary" it also helped me with the "quick disconnects" that ford uses for their heater core lines... if i didnt read or see the pictures i wouldve been back there hacking away trying to get em off.
even still it was a good 7-8 hour job start to finish. a lot of screws, bolts, etc.

Just to throw my couple pennies into the ring...
I own a 2005 PSD 4X4 crew and you could get the keys out of my hand.. I love this truck! Had it since new, it had a turbo problem when I first got it at 5,000 miles and had all the updates done and it has been rock solid ever since (although it does only have 32,000 miles on her).
I have taken it to SoCal a few times, Idaho, Oregon like six times, it's awesome on trips. Typically get anywhere from 18-23 MPG depending on how I drive (I typically never drive over 75 MPH).
I find that if I use the cruise control and set it for 2000 RPM (which equates to about 72 MPH) I average better than 19 MPG.
I have an updated EGR cooler, it runs synthetic oils in literally everything, gets a shot of cetane booster in every tank and in all honesty is treated like a princess.
Never regretted buying it for even a second. And I paid it off a few months back..

Depends on what model your 99 is...
Tahoe? 1500? There was a body style change around there that I have experience with. If its old body style at that time, steering column has to come out and the dash has hinge points it will pivot on and lean on your front seat. Like my 96 2500 work truck. That will expose the box that has heater core and evaporator core in it.
If its the latter, it'd be like my 02 half ton daily driver, in which you'd only have to remove the glove box door to get to the box that contains heater and evaporator core.

i need to redo the bunks, but i need to find a trailer shop that can reweld them into the right spots first. but man i SCORED. $300 for a competition tandem trailer and i gave the avenger hull that was on it to a friend. im glad i kept looking, i almost dropped like $1200 on an ellis a couple days before i found this one...

then i found these on ebay for $49 a piece. trailer needs new tires as well so might as well do the rims.
