If you could hang...
« on: July 05, 2011, 08:43:34 PM »
If you could hang out with any racer for the day who would it be?

RacingJunk.com posted this question on Facebook and I thought it would go good here.

LOL! X2!!! Not too far off on the Danica one either........ :sly:

Met Kenny Bernstein years ago. Friend of mines dad built/repaired his F/C chassis for him in Seneca Pa. Mike Kachek. Helluva nice guy! But probably the one I'd like to have met and spent some time with would have to be Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins.  My uncle knows him. He built engines for my uncle back when he was racing a Studebaker, then later a '65 GTO and then a 68 Corvette.

Guys like what, in his 80's anyway, but invented Pro-Stock drag racing in general, even built winning Nascar Grand National engines, Sprint cars, you name it, he did it. Far more famous as a driver! Still holds a record for number of consecutive runs without a missed shift, I beleive.......

Fun question.

And as funny as this is going to sound, I already have.

I had the opportunity to meet Joe Leonard, maybe not a hero to most, but the coolest guy ever.

He raced Indy cars back in the day. Many may remember him as the dude that almost won the Indy 500 driving the STP gas turbine car. The car broke a bolt in the final lap of the race after leading virtually every lap....Heartbreaker for sure.

Hung out, had some BBQ and even been back to help with some air conditioning and heating problems on his house.

How about the youngest (20) person to win a world championship?  And then he went on to win it 5 more CONSECUTIVE times.  Oh yeah, in the most physically demanding sport in the world.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you .  .  .   Joel Robert

He began his career in Grand Prix motocross racing for the Czechoslovakian firm CZ. In 1964, he became the youngest motocross World Champion at the time when he clinched the 250cc class at the age of 20. He won the 250cc crown for CZ again in 1968 and 1969.[2]
For the 1970 season, Robert was wooed from CZ by the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki, who was seeking to make inroads into the European dominated sport. He continued his winning streak with Suzuki by capturing the 250cc Grand Prix championship in 1970, 1971 and 1972.[3] His record of 50 Motocross Grand Prix victories stood for more than 30 years until it was broken by fellow Belgian, Stefan Everts in 2004.
Robert is remembered as one of the most naturally talented motocross riders in history. In one of the most physically demanding disciplines in sports, he was notorious for his lack of training as well as his cigarette smoking. He even put his cigarette out on Sylvain Geboers's crossbar once on the start line at a series finale, which Joël ended up winning.[4] It is rumored that in his prime, Robert was strong enough to pick up the back end of a small car.[5]

Hannah runs a close second.  I picked Joel because he knew how to party and was always surrounded by booze and chicks.  Now the cigs mighta killed me.  In Europe he could do no wrong and the fans loved him, competitors not so much.   Hanna was way up there on the rowdy fun scale, but everyone hated him because he spoke his mind 100% of the time.   Sure glad I never rented him a car.  His antics in rental cars are EPIC.  Can't remember for sure but I think it was Hannah who drove a rental car into a hotel lobby.  He didn't crash into it, he just drove in and checked in.  It was in Europe and he just played dumb like he couldn't understand what they were upset about.
By the Showtime era, a lot of stuff the early guys did would have landed you in jail.  And let's not forget Emig and Lechien, although things kinda ended badly for those two guys.

I kinda ran into Bob Glidden one time. So I'm standin there and I figure I'll get him to sign something before he gets away so I hand him my hat, this was when Purolator was sponsering Ricky Smith, He looks at it, "PUROLATOR" right on the front so he signed it under the bill, still got it i think.

I kinda ran into Bob Glidden one time.   I thought I knew where this was going . . .  I nearly bounced Eddie Hill off of the front of my truck in the parking lot of a hotel in Pomona.  Neither one of us was watching where we were going.  Inches from being REAL ugly.

I've met and hung out with quite a few racers/gearheads from the glory days of drag racing & hot rodding. Al Teague, Ed Iskendarian, Mousy Marcellus, & Tommy Ivo to name a few. Those are the guys that had/have the heart of a racer. No sponsor bullshit, no big dreams, just regular guys that turned their dream into reality. I really can't think of many modern racers I'd like to spend an hour with. Maybe, maybe Tony Stewart, and I say this strictly because he's got moxie. The guy had a dream ride @ Joe Gibbs Racing, JGR goes to Toyota, TS tells them to pound sand. I like that.

Skip I don't follow NASCAR at all but why is having Toyota in the mix a bad thing?  A) you know they are going to be driven to succeed so it makes everyone step up their program doesn't it?   and B)  the cars are all so similar, does a name on the door really make any difference.  It ain't your father's NASCAR anymore.  Now y'all have templates.  Might as well call it IROC

I don't give a rat's ass if 'yota is in Neckcar, hell my truck is a Tundra! I give TS props for standing up for what he believes in, he didn't like the fact that he'd be driving a Toyota, so he told JGR to pound sand. I like that.

actually skip is 100% right...when jg went to toyota all throughout the season stewart straight up said he would rather be in a chevy...i respect the guy 100% for telling the truth...and with hass going to prison he had his chance on buying a team...not only that, but the guy gets hounded by the media, and he is not affraid to punch some fucktard from espn...i would love to drink some beer with that guy...some high end baller that tells the absolute truth! and all he cares about is winning races

in fact allthough 99% of the people hate him is kyle busch...the dude can flat out drive and gives it his all...why do they hate him? probably because he is outspoken and gets pissed if he finishes second...if i was a team owner that's the guy i want...most of his outrage comes actually from his father...the poor kid would drive his heart out, and his dad would throw his race car in the trailer and say i didnt bring you here to finish second! wtf are we even bring you here for, and that is how kyle was talked to, also kurt, but kyle obviously it got to the most...i really respect the guy...
