For those of you that haven't heard yet I took a header over the bars on my dirt bike on Thanksgiving out at Rasor Rd. Ended up with a fractured rib and a punctured lung :banghead:
Anyway the question I have is for anyone that has had broken ribs before... The rib I broke is the third one from the top (under my left arm seen on the CT scan), but now after a couple days I'm still having a very hard time lifting my arm at the shoulder, like I might have done damage in my shoulder. Is this a normal symptom of a cracked rib? I'm going to try to see my Dr. on Monday for a follow up but was just curious if someone else could give me some insite.
Thanks
Crewchief

Dang Keith !! Im not a DOC but I hope you heel up quick !! Try and drink lots of Apple Pie! haha
-
that sucks, sorry it hurts bad! and will for a while! my dad broke 2 ribs on his back side. he could not get out of bed at all with out help. hell to take a piss in the middle of the night he had to crawl to the bath room. as far as your shoulder yah i think that is normal. you have a lot of muscles tyed to them! your best bet is to rap them tight .its what my dad did, and it did help.
-
It's normal. Like said you have a bunch of muscles in your shoulder that strain easily, and adding the broken ribs compounds the problem. My boss just went trough this about 4 months ago on his road bike (pedals). I have also broken ribs and it takes forever to heal. Heal up quick, boating season is only around the corner

I don't see how a rib can cause a different body part pain. If you said your rib hurts when you lift your shoulder, I'd get that.
I broke my collarbone (shattered) in Glamis in 06 and because I did a violent rag-doll, lawn dart maneuver I wound up with torn rotator cuffs on both shoulders. Sucked for a long time, gave up surfing every other day before work.
Doctors are idiots. All I was ever told was that your gonna need surgery or its never gonna get better. Took about a year and they've been fine ever since.
I've never had a broken rib and I hope I never do. I wish you a speedy recovery.

My uncle pulled three ribs out of his sternum on a dirt bike years ago...
In his words "everything Focking hurts"....
I would not think your shoulder should hurt in and of itself, but I could see that it would hurt to move your shoulder.. I'm betting you probably pulled something in your shoulder...
Time to invest in a side by side old man....LOL ;D

My buddy that I was out with has a saying he just couldn't say enough... "With age comes a cage"
I still like the bike, I just need to invest in a Scott steering damper before I hit the sand again.

i am 40, like my age have some wisdom (well sorta) but was smart enough to sell my quad , even though i still liked it . cause i know that i would do stupid stuff on it. and like the honda slogan says stupid hurts. and at our years ;D we heal really slow!
-
Get well Keith!!

Get well bro. I prefer the notion of killing my self instantaneously, and probably in a spectacular manner. Until then I'll enjoy myself with a drink on the couch such that it doesn't hurt so bad....or maybe I'll crash a couple more boats in the process....regardless of what they say, water is not as hard as rocks and dirt.

there isn't anything worse then having a broken rib and being constipated, or somebody telling you a really funny joke ;D

I found out today what is worse... Finally got in to see my Doctor six days after the wreck and learned that I also have a broken scapula.
That helps explain why I can't lift or move my arm at the shoulder, but don't have any serious pain in the shoulder. :banghead:
-
That sucks Keith,
Hope you heal fast.
Ride on brother
-
time for a rxr xp!
sorry for your injury bud!
-
Yeah, but how's the bike? ;D
Hope you feel better soon and get the time you need to heal.
As I get older I notice I need more time to recover even after I'm feeling OK.
Good luck!

She is biting her tongue on this one... I think she is just waiting until I feel better before she beats the sh!* out of me or kills me in my sleep. Either way, it's not going to be good for me :banghead:

chief .. sorry you got all busted up i to have popped a few ribs and it is not a good thing ,, hang in there time will make it better.. have a nip of the ole apple pie i hear that it is yummy so it may help.. best wishes.. robbie

It's been a week and half and the rib/lung don't seem to be nearly the problem that the broken scapula is. I'm having a very hard time moving my left arm, have no strength and every little thing hurts like a bitch.
Had to make a little hook rod to help me close the door and release the park brake in my Tahoe. O0
-
Hey Keith, sorry to hear about that. I know the rib thing can stay with you for awhile.
But the good news is, you have " The Driver " to help get you through the
upcoming summer time apple pie excursions to the river. ;D
* Warning, stay away from any funny people * And this one time, at band camp. Oh never mind.
Get well soon !

LOL! True, very true. Us old guys gotta watch out!
Hard to beleive the ribs aren't causing any distress though. I cracked two over the summer horsing with the kids and their friends in the pool and landed kinda on the steps. Wasn't so bad until a week later I went to get up off the couch, sneezed at the same time, and apparently finished them off.
Fell the the floor, passed out, and walked around like Quasimodo with Muscular Distrophy and a gimp leg for what seemed like 2 months.............
