Anyone know how to reset (turn off) 'engine' (aka 'idiot') light on Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0?
Does that have to be done by computer?

I was messing with something in my jeep and unplugged sensor into throttle body; must have been smog related because now the engine light is on (and I want it off). I have to get it smogged and will not pass with the light on.

That won't work (I'm pretty sure); the failure is now logged onto the microchip.
I'll try it if I don't hear anything else (then I'll have to reset all my radio stations again  )

my suggestion is to drive it....it will clear itself in time.

What i ususually do when a light comes on is i take it to the school i graduated from and let the auto shop teacher clear it for me for free. Thats what i recommend if you know your old shop teacher.

On GM vehicles there is usually a way to have the computer tell you what error codes are currently in the ecm.  Usually something pretty silly to prompt for the code., that or you have to plug a wire into an empty plug on the computer harness...research it on the Jeep forums.

The cause has been corrected but that doesn't clear the engine light; that won't clear until force cleared by the computer I guess; I thought there may be a non-computer way to reset it.

You should be able to get an inexpensive code "reader" that can also clear codes.  Check the adds for PepGirls and Kragen this weekend.

You normally have to drive a vehicle at least 50-100 miles for the computer to cycle through its system checks before you can complete a smog test.

Just pull the Neg Bat cable off for a few minutes put it back on and you will be good to go. Doesn't put the light/error code on anything. If ya was to take the light bulb out of the idiot light it WILL show up on the smog test, and you wouldnt pass.  Resetting radio presets and the time is what a 2 min job? Big deal. Also if ya knocked off a vacumn hose or cracked one that will set off the light too. So check all your hoses also. Have had a place tell me once that 2 out of 3 of my 02 sensors were bad,didnt even look under the hood. Wanted to charge me about 320 bucks to fix. I said not just yet, went home and checked under the hood and found 4 rotted vacumn hoses, replaced and after about 40 miles the light went out. Jus my 2cents    mark
