Title: Ken Nelson aka "Challenger"
Post by: Brad @ SCJB on May 25, 2010, 06:48:13 AM
Fellow SoCalJetBoats member Ken Nelson, aka "Challenger" was involved in a serious boating accident Sunday at Lake Elsinore while boating with his 5 year old son, Luke, and his brother. All 3 of them were violently thrown from the boat. The details of what happened are unclear, but unfortunately, his 5 year old son did not make it and Ken is seriously injured. His brother escaped with minor injuries.

I don't know much about Ken's condition at this point. What I have heard is he is in ICU and awaiting an MRI for back injuries. As you can imagine, he is in a ton of pain, emotionally and physically.

Luke was 5 yrs old and has a 3 year old sister Kaylie and an 11 month old brother Kenny and was awaiting the birth of his sister Stevie who is due in June. Ken and his Wife Kim are expecting another child in a couple of weeks.

[attachimg=1]

I have reached out to the family and asked if there was any way we as fellow members of SoCal Jet Boats can help. They have given me contact information as well as donation accounts to help the Nelson Family get through this.

I want to make this as easy as possible with multiple options for people to donate.

●You can donate directly the following paypal account: donations@socaljetboats.com

●You can donate by clicking on the PayPal donate button on the left front page of this site. This does not require a paypal account and you can use check or credit cards.

●You can mail me a check made out to Brad Martin or Ken Nelson to the following address:

Brad Martin
6440 Sky Pointe Drive
Ste 140-464
Las Vegas, NV 89131

●You can route money straight to the Nelson Family via the following information:

Luke Nelson Memorial
Account #2353621
Altura Credit Union
Po Box 908
Riverside, California 92502-9957

●Skip has set up an Auction here: http://www.socaljetboats.com/the-no-wake-zone/ken-nelson-'challenger'-fundraiser-auction

●Also, proceeds from stickers, shirts, hats, etc from SoCalJetBoats.com will be forwarded to the Nelson Family. Skip will be setting up another run of Hats, possibly shirts if there is any interest.

All money directly donated to SCJB will be forwarded to the Nelson family and will be presented from SCJB as a group.

And lastly, please respect Ken and his family by leaving all speculations of what happened out of this thread. At this point I have spoken to a few people that were there that are from the site. They all confirmed there was no alcohol involved and Luke was wearing his life vest. The accident did not involve any other boats. Although he was at the lake with other SCJB Members, no one from the site saw it happen. From what I have gathered, poor weather and water conditions contributed to this very sad incident.

Ken - We're pulling for you - get better soon! You, your family and especially your son is in our thoughts, hearts and prayers.

I feel truly blessed to have met this special little boy that day. He was an adorable little boy and he was having so much fun hanging out with his Dad, Uncle, and all the guys. You could see the love and strong bond Ken and his boy had. You could see the strong bond his Uncle Rick had with him as well. Luke was so cheerful and exuberant, you couldnt help but fall in love with the little guy. He was digging trenches with a hammer in the wet sand and was having so much fun. When I was BBQing Id tell the guys when a dog or a burger was done and Id look down and Luke had a bun and a plate in his hand just waiting for me. He was just like one of the guys. I will remember him and how I could just feel how special he was, for the rest of my life. When I heard what happened my first question was how was Luke. I was heartbroken when I learned he had passed. I have thought of him constantly since this happened and I am still in shock and Im just heartbroken.  That day, Ken spoke of his 3 kids and his 4th due in just 2 weeks and you could see how proud he was.

I pray for the family during this difficult time. I also pray that Ken makes a full recovery. And to the family; just know that there are a lot of guys on this forum that are there for you and if you need anything please dont hesitate to ask.

I know that for a lot of people, financial times are very tough right now...but guys, we HAVE to help.

Matt

Matt, you type with really heavy words. I got choked up on your PM yesterday....and now your post today. Thank you for sharing.

So lets get this thing started....

I got $100 in to kick this off.

If we can get the total donated over $500 by Friday, I will throw in another $100....and $100 for each $500 mark after that.

Just put my donation in the mailbox. Sending it to the Luke Nelson Memorial Account. For those wanting to send it that way, I spoke to a rep from the Altura Credit Union and you just need to write in "Luke Nelson Memorial" in pay to order of portion and be sure to write the acct# in the "for" portion.

I have two little ones (4 & 6), one in Kindergarden.

I read this and just sat here for a minute.............I finally called them both downstairs and showed them the picture of Lucas and told them that he was in a boating accident with his dad and uncle. When they asked me if he was ok, I couldn't tell them the truth. Instead I told them that we would donate some money to Lucas' family as his mommy was about to have another baby. I gave them both hugs and told them I loved them.

I couldn't imagine the pain the family must be going through at this time.............

My family will donate a hundred dollars to their account.

I have to go to Altura tomorrow anyway.    I will leave $200 in the name of Luke Nelson.

We lost my niece 2 years ago and her family is still far from being back on an even keel, especially Ashley's brother.   He is lost without her.

That is awesome Ray.

I just received the following email:

Quote
I'm sorry I had a missing number on the bank account on the last email I sent you.  If donations were already made the bank said the funds  would get to the right account and not to worry. (New Account Number is 2353621)

Also the update on Ken is he is being transferred to Kaiser in Riverside because he didn't fit into the MRI machine were he is at.  Again he is able to move and can sit up now but he is in a lot of pain.

I pray for your fast healing Mr. Nelson. I'll see what we can give.

Re: Cost

We paid $800 to the same paper you were reading about this incident for a 3 day obituary announcement for my mother.  My neice's notice was several thousands but that was a way diff deal.   I think the mortuary services were  3K before the caskets, flowers, limo, etc.

Tip of the iceberg. I hope theres a family member that steps up to try and handle/organize all this.....

C'mon guys, don't gotta be large, $10, $5. It all adds up. Theres what? 2200 members on here? $5 each and you have the chance to not only bankrupt Brad and I (No more boats, much to many's amusement), but the opportunity to give a family a chance! I think we all already know what Challenger was facing before all this.

Hey Kim,  my name is John
                                               and I am a boat-a-holic   ::)

I would have been out there for a few hours Sunday w/o the boat just to meet up with some of the newer members that I haven't met face to face like Ken.  First off, again let me express my condolences and continuing prayers for your family.   This truly was a tragedy of epic proportions.   If the family was sent to either Inland Valley Regional, Loma Linda, or RivCommHosp  I have family that has or does work in all those ER's.   I am in awe of their skills and work ethic.

Anyway, as I had the worst case of stomach flu ever, instead this weekend,  I didn't make it out.   Would it be possible to post a pic of Ken and/or the rest of the family, so we can see who we are talking about?   When he does get better, I want to know who it is that I am beating at horseshoes   ;D   I spend waaaay too much time around local lakes, and I am sure we will cross paths someday.  At least I hope to . . .

That's IT!!! I'm never playing horseshoes with John around ever again! (And ESPECIALLY with Marc as a partner.......I'm surprised noones boat got hit.....) John's a ringer....... :sly:

Then again, I've sworn to NEVER listen to Rivertard before too, and yet.......he still suckers me in!

Thank you for all that Kim!

Yes, you will never find a better group anywhere! Kinda of like the "land of misfit toys", this crew, individually (Myself included), are nuts. Collectively, we are there for anyone as a single entity it seems at times. Times like this. We are all thinking of you guys right now.

Oh how he loved to go boating;  My son, my life, my pride and now my angel!
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone for the many of kind words, support and prayers that you all have sent. What you all have done for me and my family is helping us out a great deal. There is not enough words I can express to tell you how thankful I am for everyones generosity through this all. I am thankful to be apart of this site, because we all know the struggles that are present in our world now and you all came together to help me and my family out. This truely means so much to me.
Again, thank you dearly for all that everyone has done. I hope one day I could return the generosity you all have given me.

Ken,

I have nothing to compare your loss to, but I sincerely hope that you don't blame yourself for this. You did everything you could to make sure Luke was safe and ready for a day on the lake. I have gotten many messages and emails from people, not just on SCJB, but on PB, RDP as well as people with no ties to any of the forums. A lot of people are asking as to services for Luke. What are the plans for that? I know lots of folks want to come and celebrate the life of Lucas. PM me any details.

Keep your head up brother, it does get better.

$100.......sent to the bank today, from way up here in Reno, Nevada......God bless the family

Over use the words "I love you"

Never say "I'm too busy"

We only get one chance

My seven year old just sat down with me to talk about this tragic accident.  He walked into his room and came back out with his allowance to give away.  Boy was I choked up!  God speed little guy

That brought tears to my eyes.

Ken,
I heard about this tragic accident when we got out to the river. Our deepest condolences are extended to you and your family. I wish you a speedy recovery.

For those of you who haven't met ken, he has a serious passion for jet boats. I met him at a birthday party and we B.S.'ed about boats and even this site for atleast a solid 2 hours!

Ken and Kim,

I am not sure why I feel the need to be there at the service tomorrow but I do.  Two years ago we lost my niece, at 17 she died in her sleep.  After months the coroner gave up trying to figure out why.  She was a special girl, the perfect kid.  Over 700 people came to the funeral and people are still posting on her MySpace and FB sites.   Yesterday my best friend called and tells me that HIS 19 yr old nephew died in his sleep.   To the family he was everything.
With support and love for each other, the Nelson family will get through this, I know it.  There is so much positive energy and prayer directed towards your family right now that that is the only possible outcome.  It will seem very dark right now, but in time the pain will diminish and you will be able to focus on what lies ahead for you.  Love your spouse and kids all the more, laugh and enjoy everyday with them and keep yourselves open to the good things that life will have to offer you.   I know things are awfully painful right now, but it is remarkable how at times like these you will find strength and love that you had no idea was there.   I will continue to pray for anyone who has lost a child, and please know you are not alone.       John

I managed to get today off work and left early this morning for Norco to attend the services on behalf of SCJB . Met up with Matt (Mblack)  and John (Glasscutter)...real nice service at the church, then lead over to the cemetery where they released white doves over the casket at the final resting spot for Lucas. it was pretty moving.

Matt and I headed over to the reception and got to sit and chat with Ken for awhile. he said hes still in a lot of physical pain, but the doc's said he is on a steady road to recovery and should be back to 'normal' in 2-3 months.

Ken is absolutely surrounded by a large loving family, but I let him know we are all here for him. I also delivered the check from all the donations made as well as paid auctions up to this morning. The remaining auction payments and any other donations will be mailed to the Nelson family as I receive them.

Everyone, thanks again.

It was a nice service, the minister really had a lot of nice things to say about Luke in particular, and the family in general.   I wished I had had more time to talk to Ken, but clearly today wasn't the day.   Brad it really was very cool of you to make the effort to come in for this, I am sure it was a welcome surprise to the family.
Matt, nice to make your acquaintance too, but happier circumstances for the next time I pray.  The freeway looked jacked up already at 12:30
