Title: Lake Isabella or Castaic
Post by: stc315 on November 22, 2013, 08:41:02 AM
I'm looking at a promotion out in the high desert near Palmdale Lancaster area.  If I take it, the nearest water is Lake Isabella or Castaic.  Which is better? Which has better facilities? Which is going to have less Ranger or LE issues?  If I take this job, I'll go from 30 minutes to the River to almost 4 hours to the River!  :sly:

Thanks,
Sam

Not great news for you - Castaic is LEO heaven, LA busy, and Quagga inspections....
Isabella is real low as they are repairing the dam - several year project. Main issue is that its a very, very windy lake most days....Morning runs!! Pretty loose on LEO's, no Quagga. Many campgounds!!
You can drop down to Bakersfield - Lake Buena Vista. Good campgrounds.

Good luck!

Silverwood Lake is close - never been there myself.

Forget Isabella it's nothing more than a puddle as far as the dam goes they haven't even started on repairs and non stop wind. But you have plenty to chose from in So Cal.

I liked going to Silverwood on weekdays, crowded weekends for sure and 35 mph. Cops are scarce on Mondays and Tuesdays. Only a handful of beaches that are nice and protected from the wind.

Hey don't bash Isabella, It's actually a nice decent size lake! Yes, the dam repairs are in the works and they're only allowing it to get so high, but that's not why it's so low.... It's low because there hasn't been any rain or snow pack the last year, look at the Kern, it's barely flowing into the lake! As far as the wind- what socal lake isn't blown out by mid afternoon?? We love Isabella, have had many memories out there and it's one of the few that doesn't enforce a speed limit....Jake

From Palmdale/Lancaster you could take the 138 to Pyramid Lake. Not as big as Castaic, but beautiful and less traffic. It also gets some crazy wind.

I've been to Pyramid before, but the altitude there is like 2,500ft so you got to re-jet to make your boat run good there.  I do have good memories of boating there other than the boat we had back then ran like crap there.

Whats the problem, as long as your out on your float, on any body of water should be a good time.
At least its that way while i'm in mine.
Isabella is cool because you can camp right on the shoreline, have a campfire, and some brews and have your boat beached right there and nobody says nothing. All the other local lakes are day use only. The river is a 3.5 hour drive for me and i still make the trek. Its just worth the drive time

Havasu is about a ten minute tow from the driveway. The in laws in Isabella  is about a 4 1/2 / 5 hour drive so it's highly unlikely that puddle will see my boat.

Isabella is a way better lake, no LA A$$holes there like Castiac or Pyramid But the wind does blow it out early and often , Paradise Cove is my favorite place to launch from and camp at there , If your moving to Palmdale just look around the west side between ave P to ave M from 15 st west to 60th st. west  O0

The job is actually California City, so I will probably look there or Rosemond, maybe Tehachapi.  Thanks for the advise though!  I see you're in Palmdale, we'll have to meet up sometime on the water for a cold one.  Is R&E Racing still in Palmdale?

Tehachapi is really nice and only about 20 mins up the 58 from cal city. Its one of the few places in socal that has real 4 seasons. Id live there if it wasnt an hour commute each way. Im spoiled, my office is 11 miles from my front door and it normally only takes 11 mins to get there!

Isabella is fun til the wind. Lake patrol is way laid back. We used to set up 1/4 mile pylons and not get in trouble unless you're doing something stupid. Do some checking on Cal City and Rosamond before you settle, not much out there. We are fairly close in Lake Elizabeth, not much out here either but low crime and very laid back. R&E is there but new owners.  Been out in this area a long time, let me know if I can help. There's always the bonus of Hallett Dave being right around the corner !
