Girl Dead after boating accident this weekend

I was reading this at HotBoat. A little girl died and alcohol was an extreme factor in this accident. I think we all need to slow down on the boatsoda's thet everyone brags about drinkin all weekend. Now I know why some boat cops can be dick's they have to deal with Focktards and accidents like this a few to many times a year.

I can't describe how sick this makes me feel. We had taken my daughters friend with us this weekend (both 9yr olds), and I could not ever imagine having to make the call to explain something like that to her parents.

Everone looses when it comes to drinking and boating.

The damage to human life, the damage to personal property and the damage to the drunks family after the fact are all things that drunks fail to think about before "it" happens. I hope the drunk gets jail time to help him realize what has happened.

Well there's New Rules on my boat. Nobody drinkin steps in the boat or goes for a ride. Now when the boats on the trailer and it's BBQ/camping time that's a different story. The water is fun enough without being intoxicated. We all have to stay sharp for all the other Focktard's on the lake.

Being the father of 2 young kids I still could not even imagine. After losing my frineds son on Saturday night snd now seeing this. Sucks big time. I think having your wife or g/f knowing how to drive your boat is VERY important. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Actually we drink our asses off while in the cove. We have two options. We bring our sleeping bags and stay the night in the cove or the wife drives back to the marina. We also have a boat tow company that will tow you to your marina for 100.00 Might be a busienss Idea for you guys out there. Dude stays out all day with a sign with his cell# on it. He said that on a saturday he will clear better than a Grand in less than two hours.

he said during the summer he clears a min of 1500 per weekend and all he is out is his gas in his boat. and its an old Glastron with a big ass 200hp outboard. He sits in teh party cove all weekend and watches the girls and the parties and at dusk he rakes in his money.

Not sure I want to post this but I will for the morbidly curious. A friend and co-worker of mine was with one of the families involved in the accident but not at the scene. What follows is his email to me this morning. I don't post on HB so you won't see this over there.

Here are the facts as best as I know them with regards to the accident. Our friend who has many many hours on the river was the one that had the alcohol in his system. I believe he blew 0.18%. With that being said, he was doing as he should, heading south on the right-hand-side of the river. He was doing between 35 and 45 at the time of the accident. The other driver of the boat, who, from what I understand, was sober, was heading North back towards Topock Marina. Based on a conversation at the hospital in Las Vegas, he said he was having difficulty seeing because of the setting sun, so he was traveling on the left-hand-side of the river (a no-no as far as I know). I am not sure of the approximate speed of this boat. When both boats finally realized they were dangerously close to one another, our friend veered to the right (I was just taught earlier that day that that is the appropriate course of action in such a situation as outlined in the Coast Guards guide) and the other driver went left which resulted in the head on collision.

I am not fully aware of all the injuries on the other boat other than that of the poor child's fatality. On our friend's boat, his wife and autistic child, having been situated in the bow of the boat, were flung into the water, landing safely and unharmed other than initial shock. Their other 13 year old daughter broke her arm and jaw, losing about 4 teeth in the process. The driver hit the steering wheel, breaking a couple of ribs and puncturing his lung.

As I was the designated driver that day, it was a long, long night as I drove from Park Moabi to Golden Shores to Fort Mohave to Golden Shores and then after an hour's sleep to Las Vegas and back. Also, as of last night, it looked as though our friend's daughter and he (or should it be: him) will be released today. And that, my friend, is the best recounting as I know it. Our friend shouldn't have been on the water with that much alcohol in his system but he isn't solely to blame and the bottom line is that no matter which side you take, this was a tragic event for all involved.

OK; 2nd to alcahol in causing boating incidents is ignorance; although you shouldn't be operating anything at .18 BAL, taking the email as-is, it was the ignorant sober driver, not following or not knowing boating rules, that caused this incident.

At the Avi . I had my wife ,10 month old and 6 year old , Bard , (woman) kate , my freind and his wife in my hallett and as we cruised at very low speeds an asshole on a jet ski with a young passenger is all but coming head on at us and misses the back of my boat by maybe a couple of feet .

The second time he almost caught a SCJB koozie to the face head on . The point is shit happens unfortunatly . I'm guilty of boating under the influence that very morning first thing . Beers or no beers , if we were all doin what we are supposed to , this stuff wouldnt happen . My condolences to the family .

According to the press release (now posted on hotboat.com) the accident occured on the Arizona side of the river with both boaters turning toward shore and colliding, putting fault on the drunk in the open bow boat heading south on the north bound side. He apparently is a friend of my boss, a local business owner and family man, but I stand by my earlier post (failure to think should be punishable).

My prayers are with all the families involved.

You guys would be surprised with all the alcohol related deaths/injurys we have here on the water. Not all of our news hits the paper. It brings bad publicity to Bullhead. So i have heard.

unfortunatley most boating and vehicular laws ALWAYS cite the person who has been drinking. There have been accidents in which someone rearended someone else and the one who got rearended was drunk and HE got the ticket. Bottom line if alcohol is involved and there is an accident you are going to be held responsible. In this case it sounds like this idiot was on teh wrong side of the river ,swerved the wrong direction and would have been held liable had the other individual not been intocxicated! You can thank MADD for that!
