Title: late nights alone + YouTube = zoomies
Post by: Ken on April 14, 2016, 06:03:20 PM
Working 10 and sometimes 11 hour shifts and living in an RV on my companies property, keeps me at "home" during the week. So I kill a lot of time on Netflix and youtube. The majority of you tubing is watching HotRods or Dragboats, and mainly what the Socal jet boat crew posts. Recently I've been mezmerized with the boats with Zoomies. Don't know why all of a sudden, but I have, and since I work at a header shop, I figured I'd make a set for my 460.

I wanted 2 1/8" tubes, but I couldn't swedge that size down into the oval 2" flange port, so I formed and welded in 2" stubs,  2 " long, and cut them down to 1" stubs on the mill, then laid them out.

I then needed to see what radius and length looked best, but since my jet is up in Washington, I just sort of winged it with a test block and tried to visualize what looked good.

Got the sweep, angle, and look I wanted, and tacked it up. Formed the 2 1/8" to the 2", welded them up, put a reinforcing bar in the middle and on the bottom, and sanded the welds smooth, so that when I have them ceramic coated, all the seams will be gone. Now the hardest part.... copy it exactly  for the other side

One side done. Tubes are 13" long, and I'll have them coated bright silver.

That looks like the equivalent of a drag boat for the street. Nice.

Looks good! People don't realize how the wrong angle, wrong spacing or wrong length can make it just not look right.

They are done. I'm not 100% happy with them, as I wasn't able to blend the 2 1/8" into the 2" as well as I wanted. But overall I'm happy with them. Off to Ceramic coating in a week and I show those results.

The sides, are in line, the ends are in line, and I'm happy with the angle.

Lining them up with a level was tricky as if the radius was off just a little bit, the level would fool you.

Finally got the Zoomies back from our coating facility. I spent hours sanding and smoothing them out, and the results are great. They almost look chrome. Now I just need to finish my boat to put them on.

Looks good.  Looks like you have a nice Model A in the shop too.

Thanks, yeah that Model A belongs to a customer of Walden's Speed Shop where I work part-time.
