Title: Lazy State Workers...
Post by: Luckie Stiff on July 16, 2009, 08:53:49 PM
I was driving home today and I stopped in for a "roadie" at a small store in the country near the prison I work at.  There was a couple of old men in the store, just kind of hanging out, they saw one of the vanpool vans go by and instantly started berating "those lazy state workers" that got me thinking as I finished my drive home, here's what I have on my plate on a daily basis;

20 Buildings & 10 towers as follows

1. Health & Safety-2 full bathrooms, janitor's room/mechanical room
2. Procurement- Same as H&S
3. Transportation- Same as H&S
4. IST- Same as H&S, but with a 3rd and 4th bathroom that are double the size of the others.
5. Administration-  1 Medium size full service kitchen, 2 large locker rooms & large bathrooms, 4 more large bathrooms, 1 Warden's bathroom, 2 inmate bathrooms, 2 janitor's rooms, 1 large mechanical room.

6. Visitor processing/Front entrance, 2 small staff bathrooms, 1 small inmate bathroom, 1 barber shop, 2 large public bathrooms.
7. Friends Outside trailer, 2 staff bathrooms, 2 public restrooms, 1 kitchen
8. Gatehouse- 1 small bathroom
9. 10 Gaurd Towers- Each with a bathroom, water heater, pressure reducing station and backflow preventer

10. Wastewater treatment plant- 2 staff baths, 2 inmate baths, 4 emergency showers, quality lab, piping @ the headworks
11. Shooting range/classroom- 2 full baths
12. Support Warehouse- a total of 4 staff baths, 2 large inmate baths, a small kitchen/break room
13. Recycling- Staff bath, inmate bath
14. Motor Pool- 2 inmate baths, 2 staff baths, 2 emergency showers
15. Firehouse- LARGE inmate bath/locker room, LARGE staff bath/locker room, kitchen, laundry room.
16. Farm Bldg.- 1 staff bath, 1 inmate bath, 1 emergency shower.
17. Lvl 1 family visiting- a 2 bedroom/1 bath apartment, full bath & kitchen.
18. Lvl 1 Program/Support Bldg-5 staff baths, 5 inmate baths, 3 janitor closets, Dental lab/exam room, medical lab/exam room, full LARGE commercial kitchen, full large dishwashing room, 1 very large mechanical room.

19. Lvl 1 Housing unit (2 of them) 1 staff bath in each, 4 medium inmate baths in each, 2 large inmate baths in each, mechanical room, janitor's closet (this shit gets abused)

20. Lvl 1 Hobby/chapel/visiting- 3 inmate baths, 3 staff baths, 2 large public baths.
21. Armory/locksmith bldg- 2 full baths, 2 emergency showers, mechanical room
22. Sallyport building- 1 staff bath

All that and roughly 2 1/2 miles of underground water/sewer lines from 3" to 18"

I get monthly PM (preventative maintenance) work orders for each fixture in my area, in addition to that I do ALL the demand (fix it) work orders, any projects that come up, order all my materials and schedule my time to get them all done, inmate timecards & safety meetings and staff BS, oh and I do all of this with 1 inmate worker.

The next time someone talks shit about lazy state workers, think about this post (the electrician & engineers have all the same buildings I do)

Thanks for the rant
Skip

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I get to do it @ 80% of my normal pay for the next year, thanks Arnie

Sooooo, what do you do on Tuesday?  ;D

The reasons for calling a state worker "lazy" stems from IMO the "Hot Potato" theory. Ever notice how easy it is to get a government employee to let someone else do their jobs?  I don't believe all or even most state workers are lazy, but I guarantee there are a lot of workers not pulling their own weight.

I was working on some 500 ton centrifugal chillers at a state college in the area and the facility mechanic walked up to the head engineer and told her he was not going to do what was on his work order and there was nothing she could do about it. She asked him what the problem was (very politely BTW) and he snapped back and said "I don't know how to fix it and I don't feel like reading the manual"! Just a speed drive was not running for a pump I needed to get started.

I don't mean to call somebody a lazy idiot, but if the shoe fits ......BTW, all he had to do (all I did to fix it  ;) ) was to turn a breaker back on because the morons doing the infra red testing left it off (State contracter).....

I feel your pain Skip, been pulling a three person sled around for a while now  :banghead:    :screwy:  :banghead:

New job in tee minus two weeks

I don't think of most state workers as lazy, I think most state workers have too many managers and paper pushers above them trying to make themselves look good and not getting anything productive done.

I think Skip should be working in Sactown showing those idiots where the sh!t really goes  ;D

Skip, I'm sure that you are a hard worker and earn less than you are paid. I think that part of the problem is that the state workers that the general public come in contact with really suck at customer service because they know they have ALL the cards--ie, DMV, State Parks, Franchise Tax Board (guilty until proven innocent), CARB, and other various state agencies.  After the frustration in dealing with these state people, it is natural to paint the rest with a broad brush.

Takes one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch!  ;)

However I am going to say this...I see a ton of them guys on my jobs and they are a bunch on stand around artist...know a couple people out here in vegas that work for various parts of the city...one guy told me yeah we get 2 days to plant a tree...so we do it in one and sleep all day in the truck the next...just crap like that...another deal is we got 3 clark county inspectors on one job...they are there for 10 hours a day! Their deisel 4 x 4 trucks idle all day...that's a lot of tax money down the drain in my book! Now I'm not saying all are lazy here but its a stereotype hate to say it, but it is...the one inspector told me...yeah I'm never in the field I work in the office but there's no work...so I'm out here and haven't got a clue what I'm looking at...nice guy but maybe lay offs or necessary...

Rant over

Still love me skip?
