Title: Let's talk Insurance
Post by: GlassCutter on March 11, 2015, 07:07:56 PM
I am getting set to pay my yearly premium.  At the time I was reading on RDP about all the trouble people were having even finding insurance.  I started with AAA because I am already a customer but they wouldn't do it.  After getting a couple other turn downs I ended up with Progressive.  Now that I know George Soros owns Progressive (cute name George)  I want to leave.  The question is where to?

Anybody wanna compare comps?

1974 Wreidt Montara
300 HP  Covered motor

100/300,000 Bodily Injury
100 Property damage including fuel spillage
100/300,000 Uninsured boater
5K each person medical benefit

Comprehensive   Agreed value $10,000  (I paid 6K for it)  Zero deductible
Collision               Agreed value $10,000    Zero deductible   Zero deductible

Included with the Comp & Collision  is $250 damage coverage on trailer with no deductible

$500 towards Emergency Watercraft Towing and Labor for each incident.
$1000 towards replacing Personal effects lost/damaged by sinking.

Seems like pretty good coverage but it comes in at $335 yearly.    High?  Low?  So whatchu all think?  Can I do better?

Mine is not that high! But I did not put a value of 13 on my boat either. It's 250 .

Well I have my convictions but I'm not about to pay $700/yr either.  I insure my cars for that much and my boat hasn't left the driveway in over a year.  The quotes I got years ago were all over $500 and that seemed kinda high for a 40 yr old boat that gets used 10-15x a year at best.

I pay $550 a year for my boat but that's on a 2014 shockwave 21' open bow (60k is covered for boat and trailer). So the quotes your getting seem high

When I had insurance on my Southwind tunnel. I was using wozencraft insurance. 30k on the boat and 3K on the trailer. Agreed value. It was around 800 a year or so.

My first quote was Wozencraft, but nearly twice as much as Progressive was.  Coverage wasn't as good either.
Wow, I guess maybe where I'm at is still the place to be price wise.  That's sad.   Well at least I can still fantasize about shutting Flo up for the best 5 minutes of her life.   >:D

Who has had the best luck with O/T headers. I tried 3 places with no luck. But that was with the blower motor, hoping to to have better luck with my lil N/a motor. Talked to jake a lil yesterday and I don't mind paying the price to know if anything ever did happen I would be covered and not out 25k+.

I talked to a few companies that would only write coverage for boats with engine covers.  I guess a blower sitting on top of the motor doesn't count?

I was on the Parker strip circa 1991 when someone's boat was stolen from Sundance.  Allegedly the boat was shoved off and floated down river while the thieves stripped the blower and induction.  The boat was later found on the rocks, minus the induction.

This has always made me paranoid about my own boat.  Thieves don't need to know how to start it to tow it off.  When I attended the Hot Boat Regatta at Irvine Lake, proof of insurance was required.  I contacted the same lady at AAA who insured my boat for the previous owner, she said, "NO WAY!"  Wozencraft was the only carrier who would insure my boat, they would not put a value on it without receipts for anything.  Regarding speed and horsepower, I played dumb.  Wozencraft was kind enough to fudge the numbers enough so that I could be approved.  What I learned from all that is 1. the insurance that I pay for is not to protect me, it is to protect others if I make a mistake  2. if you can't document that you had it, even if it is in the pictures, the insurance company is NOT going to replace it  3. deviations from what is acceptable is grounds to deny a claim.

Bottom line, keep good records!  And YOU are the last in line for the safety and security of your passengers and vessel.

If they send out an adjuster after an incident, it might end come back to bite you if you lied about HP and MPH.

This insurance thang sucks! Got boat up and running yesterday and wanted to go test today and trying to be responsible and have coverage. Don't know why they take all your info give you a quote then last question is does it have a exposed motor ooooooh we can't cover that. That should be there first question what a waist of my time.

Try a company called Formost.  They asked Hp I said 350. They ask speed I said 50 mph. Both are true at 3000 rpm.
No pictures no question about exhaust were ask. I would not call in with a header burn to insure. I got avg. coverage with a know value of 20,000.00

I believe it was 350.00 a year. We have Farmers for all our insurance now but the don't insure boats so the use Formost to insure the boat and other toys.  We have had them on the sand toys also been good for that.

Wozencraft insurance in Orange County is big into boating himself and will get anyone covered no matter horsepower, I have mine thru them and couldn't be happier, they write for several different companies, mine is with farmers and have had a couple claims without any issues.
I was a adjuster for progressive insurance and went to them and wouldn't go anywhere else, if you need a number let me know.
I pay around 400 a year but have agreed value of 17k and high coverage for property damage and bodily injury.

Former adjuster and Fraud Investigator here....  Be careful not fully disclosing info on your boat.  In CA(where most of us are), ANY misrepresentation of info on your policy is grounds to deny any claim.

It'd suck to have something happen, then the insurance company walk from it, BUT IT CAN AND DOES HAPPEN.    ALWAYS remember, when you deal with an insurance company, you are dealing with a financial institution.  Any other thing you think is marketing influence.  Your coverage comes down to one thing, your policy.  They wont pay for something not on the policy.   Your policy is the contract.  If you misrepresent your end of the policy, or contract, the contract can be void.

There is no good or bad companies.  There are good and bad policies.  This is where a good agent comes in.  There are ALOT more bad agents then good ones.   I could provide a ton more info, but feel i'm rambling

Hey All,

I read all of your input on what's covered, what's not covered, what to tell your insurance company, what they're willing to cover and what value they are covering your boat for. Give me a call and I'm happy to give you all the information you want. The reality is that we never use insurance until it's a major accident or loss. I think Dennis was the one who said he didn't mind paying the premium because the alternative to not having insurance is being out the 25K he has into Becky and I couldn't agree more.  There are a million options out there and coverage combinations. Jet Boat Insurance is not one size fits all. And honestly as the price of a 55mph boat vs. a 85 mph boat isn't that different, being honest upfront guarantees that in the case of something major the insurance company doesn't hesitate on paying the claim.

By all means give Nikki a call.
She is very knowledgeable and easy to work with.
She asked me about engine horse power.  I replied it has never been on a dyno.
I told her the engine spins a stainless 'A' impellor to 6,000 RPMs.
There was a moment of silence and then a reply.  Well according to the charts I would say it is 750 HP.  We can do this Dave, no problem.
I feel we have great coverage at a fair price.
Thank you again Nikki and we hope to see you and James at the Mothers Day trip.

It all depends on the value and what limits you want/need. Average is typically between $50-100 a month.

Insurance is not manditory on the water but in all its a safety precaution. Imo why not protect yourself and belongings. And unfortunately my boat is not the easiest to get insurance on. Nikki was able to help me out and able to get me insured with ALL THE CORRECT information provided. She was extremely easy to do business with. She has my vote, recommendation, and will be my provider as long as I own a boat. And like she said above estimates are free!!

I did a long shot through my AAA and it was easy and cheap. Guy came out and did the inspection his only comment was beautiful boat. And he was an older man in his 60s didn't Harass me on open headers or being 700hp. Asked top speed I told him 75-80. It was less than 200 a year and covered for 15k.
