I just put brand new rotors and pads on the front of my trucks no more then 8 months ago. i drive a lot of highway miles....and im already metal on metal on the inner passanger side....WTF? :mad: ...something was obviously screwed up. :sly:
so I see these brakemaster shops around town advertising "Lifetime Brakes" for like $90......i know, you get what you pay for...and brakes are nothing to skimp on..but really....whats the story? pads and rotors for my truck run me around $300 just in parts....i know they are advertising pads only, but is it worth a shot?

i cant tell...and didnt want to rip it all apart to find out. that one is the only one thats metal on metal.

you need to know, because if so then i would be thinking a caliper is going out

The lifetime brake deals are the cheapest pads they can find.....and they charge you labor each time tomchange them, then Upsell the hell outta the job. You won't save any money. Call me in the morning. I work for centric parts/stoptech/powerslot.....I'll set you up with good parts and we can talk about why things failed so quick on the last set.

These have a bad brake habit. We have two Silverado shop trucks and they both recently had calipers put on them and a service bulliten was performed but don't know what that entailed...
I drive a 1 ton Chevy van all over the place, over hills, stop/go traffic and freeways and the brakes are like new (just had them checked) and the truck has 56,000 miles already (2009) :screwy:
I thought it was the way our idiots.......I mean drivers drove...LOL :D
My 1994 Z71 1500 had Powerslots...Great stuff. :thumbup:

Sounds like the caliper or slides are sticking, some shops won't warranty any commercial vehicles (for brakes)

Glen, give me a call....we just developed some new pads that you need to try out on those trucks......some of the highest cold friction we've tested and they have a max operating temp of about 1400 degrees.

I went with NAPA Lifetime pads at 50K on my MegaCab. I bought the rotors but when I took the wheels off, it was gonna be such a pain to pull the hubs apart that I just installed pads and returned the rotors. 49,000 miles on stock MOPAR brakes, most of it commuting the 91 in rush hour. I am very pleased to get that kind of mileage out of factory stuff. I hope the NAPA parts go that long. I think the pads were $89 and the rotors about $250 for my 2500.
Brad I think you have a rotor sticking somewhere. And don't go cheap on brakes, sometimes glue fails or crooked attatchement on the parts, and the quick and dirty tech won't bother to check or tell you.

My dad has you beat by over 150,000 miles...He has a 2000 Silverado 4X4 and has only had to replace the emergency brake shoes....It has 275,000+ miles and still runs like it's scared.
Amsoil in the crankcase too :sly:

As of about 4 years ago, there is no aftermarket rotor or drum production in north America.....bendix, raybestos, Wagner.....all the big boys have gone to china. I know the foundries from which most of these guys get there rotors.
These days, country of origin has little to do with quality. Quality is driven by how much one is willing to pay the factory to manufacture the part. The Chinese are just as capable of producing top shelf parts as anyone else....but won't do it if they are beaten down on
Price like most of their customers are used to doing. You just have to educate yourself and choose your purchases wisely. When it comes to brakes, I can help.....I dunno shit about anything else though

I would agree its a caliper issue when the pads don't wear evenly.
Here's another one you don't hear much about. Fluid and the flexible hoses to the calipers! Used to see this one on U-Hual trucks all the time, regardless of brand of vehicle. All new pads, rotors and calipers, let go the steering wheel and hit the brakes, hold on for your life! You were pulling one way or the other!
Brake fluid really needs to be flushed, like transmission fluid SHOULD be, not just drained and changed, at about the same intervals, for one. Second, anytime you change calipers, do not be a cheapskate. Change the hoses! Here's why. While soft, decrepid hoses will mildly increase the amount of pedal pressure you need to apply to stop the vehicle, the same restrictions will apply when you release the brakes. In other words, the lack of pedal pressure when you release the pedal does not immediately completely release the pressure in the hoses, allowing the brakes to ride or hang for maybe a few to more than a few seconds on the rotors. More of a problem braking just a 'tad' at freeway speeds than starting and stopping all the time around town. This is likely why we identified it at U-Hual prolly 7 years ago. That and, well, we've all rented U-Hual trucks, and run 'em like we stole 'em, right? >:D
In a nutshell, if the pads were wearing out prematurely, say in 30k or so miles, a service bulletin was issued that the system was first to be flushed, the hoses and calipers were changed along with fresh cut rotors and new pads. Then bled properly with the same flushing device. Never saw that problem resurface on the same vehicle. Just food for thought!
Oh, also make sure you're coating the shit out of the slides/liners with Motorcraft brake silicone.......... I've noticed more of a problem with my rear calipers because the rear axle is in the water so much. When they squeak at all, time to pull the wheels and calipers and relube the little S/S liners.

i dont have time to fix this shit myself so i took it to brakemasters this morning thinkin i could just get away with a $100 job and get it done correctly later....
they called me with a $730 quote.....So I called Pat....he hooked me up with the parts I need and is getting them here to vegas first thing in the morning. :thumbup:
