Sealant Question

The picture may not show it too well but in certain spots the sealant is cracking. I have a polyurethane sealant used for forming "permanent water and weather proof seals." Can I scrape off what's cracking and just use this stuff?  It bonds to fiberglass and metal as well. It doesnt say marine grade but you think this will do the job?

Any help would be appreciated because I was going to do it now. Thanks

Just me, but I'd scrape it all off clear around your pump completely with a razor blade, then make sure it's good and clean with goobgone and acetone or thinner. Say what they want about this "Marine grade", but I'd be willing to bet my showers at home see more direct water in a year than ANYONE's boat does.

In most cases, "marine grade" simply means "More Markup"....... JMO

I dont even use any around the bowl.
Thats what the O-ring gasket is for.
You be be glad you used as little as you did when it comes time to take it apart.

This is an impellor I took out of my "fresh" pump that only had maybe 2 seasons on it.
It only takes an instant to trash your impellor and in some cases, the entire pump.
My pump comes apart at least once a year for this very reason.
I use all the gaskets that come in the kits and only use a very thin bead of pure silicone that I even smear on with my finger on either side of the transome gasket .
No muss no fuss with any of my installs and tear downs.
I think I'm going to be the only one that has this opinion though.  :-\



Jetaholic had a similar situation with a piece of trash in his impellor that ended up jamming the impellor against the housing and cracked the housing.
His boat began to take on more water than it could get rid of and all but sank it.

Silicon is for tits in my opinion .

Yup stock bowl O-ring used here coated with some vasiline to get it in nice and smooth. ;D

I use Marine sealant on everything.....The trick is to use piano wire in the gap before you seal it up....Then pull the wire out when it's time to pull it apart...Sort of like opening a canned ham.... :P

My last three boats were made of used up Coors cans, they move around more than you could possibly imagine :screwy:

I don't trust just the o rings because the angle of the transom and the adapter needs to be pretty damn close for them to work right...

I am a little weird when it comes to this kind of stuff because we almost lost a boat to the river on '01... :thumbdown:

So I removed all the old worn down crap around the bowl but it also took out the glue or whatever was in there. I sealed the bowl using the polyurethane sealant. Am I ok here or did I miss something? I ask this because it had the glue and the sealant and now theres only the sealant I just put on. I just want to be safe and have no leaks so did I mess up and miss putting something else in before I used the sealant?

I don't know if you tried a search, but there's been a few threads on how to do this.

If you decide to use silicone, all you need is something that is 100% silicone.
Use some masking tape to outline where it's going to go so it looks clean and doesn't make a huge mess.
You don't have to go crazy and gob it on, just put a nice bead around. Put on a rubber glove and use your finger to
even out the silicone so it looks all pretty. Then peel the tape off before the silicone dries.

If you go with silicone you gotta post pics of the end result so we can see how you did ;D

What I was saying in the post before yours is that I already did it. That's what Im asking...when I scraped off the old sealant the glue came out with it. There was no gasket. I sealed it back up with the polyurethane sealant, no gasket. The sealant is used for forming "permanent water and weather proof seals." It bonds to fiberglass and metal.

My question is, is this going to be ok or do I need to re-do it and do it differently. I havent done this before so I just want to make sure I do it right and dont sink my shit (knocks on wood).

Using poly will be OK, the issue is getting it back apart if/when you need to...The problem with silicone is when gasoline hits it, it disappears like money from your wallet... :thumbdown:

What sealer did you end up using? If I may be so bold.... :sly:


BTW, did you end up getting an oil pan?

Hmmm, hate to be the doom and gloom, I am not sure that pan is going to fit...The sealer may be OK...Not what I use, but that means nothing...

Yeah, as soon as I posted I saw your post. I think you'll be OK with the sealant. But like GT said, taking of something that
"permanent water and weather proof seals." might be your issue when you have to take your pump apart.
There shouldn't be any glue because these parts are designed to be taken apart.

Yes silicone comes off with gas, but if you got gas around your pump,  :sly:

My point was that it is not solvent resistant like a marine sealer is...Oil included... ;)

Why do you think the pan wont fit? "Blow it up" on this forum has the same pan and it worked for him. The mechanic looked at it and said it would fit as well. Im keeping my fingers crossed that it will.  X
