So I know this is the best place to post this up, but I'm not a fan of the other boat sites...
So what is everyone's option of a 351 backed up by a cobra drive? I have seen a couple boats with this combo.
I am really green when it comes to I/O's. I now Alfa is the go to drive but that's about it. Also how hard would it be to find marine parts for the 351?

I know a couple guys who run King Cobras, and have heard from other that theyre pretty tough. 351's are not uncommon in marine applications.

What year? The problem with anything OMC is that they are Obsolete. Bomardier owns the rights. On the positive side, offer low and keep your eye out for a Mercruiser. The hull cut out and motor mounts are identical.
The King Cobra was pretty over built. No bad stuff. Just don't hit anything. Expensive to fix compared to a Merc.
JMHO, but offer low.

if yer gonna get a 21, jump into the bravo. i have the alpha one gen 2 and im always worried about breaking it if i jump on it too hard... :banghead:

So I was doing a little more digging and found a post that said there was an option package called the "351 King Corba" that was the normal cobra drive backed to a slightly increased hp small block. I also found some reading about the shifting issues on the Cobra drives, but it seems to be a simple adjustment or cable replacement.
I didn't even notice the Hawaiian doesn't mention the year.
Yeah, the only drives I know is bravo1. That is what three of our family friends boat have. I can't imagine that 351 would be able to put out enough power to go hurting anything though? I have been unable to find specs on what the drive was made to be able to handle though.
Anyone have an estimate at the speed I could expect from either those boats?

Unless you are making stupid hp, you will not break it on acceleration.
I have put in excess of 500 hp in front of a gen. 2. You won't break it.
I am putting a 356 hp mouse in front of mine. I don't plan on being real gentle on it.
The killer on then is heat, making a drive shower a must.

the king cobra is a different drive. It uses a cone clutch like an SX or a Bravo I. The regular Cobra used a lower gear case from the late 70's. Refined junk. Imho.

That's what I was worried about, I'm pretty sure it's a regular cobra. Everything I have read says they only back a king up with a big block...

Yea that's a King Cobra. Also the year designation in the HIN are the last 2 digits.
FYI a regular Cobra is not a bad outdrive, not the best but certainly not the worst, my 88 Sunray has one. As long as you service them regularly and keep the shift cable functioning properly, it will last. The junk OMC's were the earlier versions known as- Stringer mount/800 Series

Ive looked at it, but not in detail. It looks nice from the outside. I would say a good buff and polish job. It has a SEI drive on it, from what ive read they are the best aftermarket option to Alpha one's. And what will go on our boat when we break ours.
But yes it looks pretty clean. If i see it again ill stop and look closer

I use to work on the cobra back in the early 90s but if I remember right Volvo penta took over the patent in late 90s I think you can get part through them still

Parts come from Bomardier. The Volvo SX had very few similarities.
The King Cobra is virtually an early Volvo SX in a manner of speaking.

Yeah, I've attempted to look up a lot of different parts. And they all seem pretty readily available in a couple different places. I have however been unable to find any max horsepower rating for the drive, or much detailed information on speed capabilities. I do know there is a lot that goes into all that, but just looking for something.

Max hp for the King? I would say on the neighborhood of 500.
The regular Cobra, about 300.
Just on what I have seen.
The King can take way more rpm. Like 6,000. The regular Cobra was rated at 5,000.

It's an 82, guy got it payment for a job from a friend doesn't know too much about it. Ran it a couple times, been in it a couple times before he owned it.
I'm looking into back due fees and title liens, to be on the safe side.
More interested in know the hull details, if I remember correctly this hull went from Bahner to Ultra to Eliminator. I don't think is the current production hull. But any details or confirmation would be nice.
Also with that little 350, what kind of mph should I expect?
