I'm left with a ragged leather collar with sharpened stainless steel spikes, ID tags and 15 years of good times and memories.
Some little stray miniature pinscher followed me home on my Schwinn when I , was 12 years old. I couldn't keep him. Pops wouldn't let me take him home because he had just lost a dog after 18 years.
For a week after I first met this dog we were stuck together. After school, I'd come home, grab my bike and I knew I'd find him at the continuation school cafeteria. They'd always feed him leftovers so that's where he hung out.
I was fuct cause I couldn't take him home but I was gonna keep him for someday. A friend let me keep him in his backyard a long as I fed him and picked up his shit.
For two months I rode my bike to Petsmart every day after school and bought a $0.59 can of cheap dog food, brought it over fed him and cruised the neighborhood letting him follow met on the bike. He was always right on my ass, got his nose burnt on the tioga comp III a few times from following too close.
I bitched and bitched and bitched about bringing him home so he could sleep in my bed. Finally, 13th birthday came around and I was expecting some cool gifts. Mom says, "I'll drive you to go get the dog food." I thought, shi t, that's cool. She pulls up at my buddy's house where he was kept... I'm confused at this point.. She said, "Your father and I talked about it and decided you can bring him home for your birthday present."
Holy crap, went and grabbed his ass jumped in the car and bawled my eyes out on the way home. He licked every tear off. I had the best years with that dog same bed. We were an item.
I moved a few miles away and he didn't adjust to the move, do he had to be with my parents. Saw him and sat on the couch nearly every day for the last 4 years. Health went down hill for him, he was losing to much weight and starting to stumble around. I had to make a decision before it was too late and he would stuffer. This was a dog that would catch a small tennis ball while doing a backflip... He had become a shell of a once vigorous animal. Mom (who had become severely attached) wasn't supportive at first. I set a date and time last week to let my dog go with dignity.
The same woman who drive me home with the same dog while I cried as a teenager, drove me to the vet tonight. While I cried.
I had to keep it together somewhat so he stayed calm. Hand fed him a double quarter pounder with extra cheese piece by piece all the while on the examining table.
Everything went as smooth as it can. Great staff at the VCA in La Mirada, they were calm and good with him, no yelps plus they let me hold him as he went.
Sorry for the long ass post. Just letting you know an 11lb stray mutt can bring a man to his knees.
