Title: May I vent ???
Post by: SoonerFan on January 17, 2009, 10:32:17 PM
Ok...Im new at the Jet Boat thing but if a person owns a boat why wouldnt they want to maintain it? Case in point...I cranked over the boat today and it started up, then I turned it off to run water thru it and when I started it up again it made this horrific noise and wouldnt start..pulled the starter and the nose cone was busted off ( and it was a brand new starter ) got the replacement from the numbers on the old one and replaced it...GUESS WHAT !! Snapped the nose cone!! and this was with all the shims in place...pulled it back out and called marine shop and they told me it was the wrong starter?? the nose cone was to big for the bellhousing?? Hmmm why was the other starter new?? hmmm then I decided to chech the plugs....look like they've been in there awhile !! and a couple of burned  errr melted plug wires  :banghead:  I just got this boat and this was the first really close look Ive taken....I guess inexperience shows huh.... well I have my work cut out for me before summer   what happened to preventitive maintenance???  Just had to vent  ;D

Judging from my recent aquisitions, maintenance to the masses means to tow it home after you grenade the engine. Then it seems to need looking at.

I am big on maintenance as well.  Take my boat in at the beginning of the season for the yearly service.

let me put a different spin on this. a lot of you guys buy boats from unknown people for cheep, then, complain when shit doesn't work. you get what you pay for or pay a price for not knowing better. my first boat i  payed 4,500 and it was a peice of shit :banghead: :banghead: i threw a bunch of money at it, just to give it away and start over :-[

if you don't know what your doing ask some one that does to go with you. why would you buy a boat with out a water test ??? i am a firm believer that if i haven't seen it run, know the person or the boat i better be getting it realllllly cheap.
rant over

I have to agree with Ralph...

Ive sent my G/F's dad to look at 2 different boats, both times he brings them home..
I ask him, well how does it run ? his answer  I dont know yet ???

he bought 2 boats with out even starting them. The boat that i have in the spam section ran great but we had to have the pump rebuilt. If he would have started the boat , he would have heard the bearing growling like a mad dog :banghead:

That has been repaired..

Now for the new boat.. he just looked at it with a flashlight and forked out cash..

Guess what. Its fuked up to....

I spent more time working on other peoples crap, i dont even have time for mine.

Today i spent working on putting the blue boat back together again.. Yeah somebody else's boat!!! NOT MINE

Well lucky for me its nothing REAL bad !! and if I knew someone who knew diddly about jet boats I would have taken them  ;D But at least from now on I'll know that it is being kept up....what do you think about this next winter pulling the motor and giving it the once through ??

i would think that depends on how it does through the season. If it has no problems and good oil pressure, if it aint broke dont fix it. my .02

Lol kudos, Steve,

I was only tring to make the point, and I KNEW my boats were projects going in to them, that it seems rare to find one of these turnkey and ready to run that isn't advertised with "Fresh engine" or similar. All seem to need something, and that equates to me that maintenance , and ignorance, is the issue. I think the original thread was aimed at that. You guys gave great advise to anyone looking at a boat prospect.

As far as mine go, I kinda knew what I was getting into, and needed the diversion. Wasn't planning on 2 of them, but oh well.

To Ralph's point, yes. If you buy a car you don't test drive, off the internet, you're an idiot unless you get some sort of guarantee. SAme thing applies to boats, cars and X-Boxes. I agree.

But on the other side of it, if you're looking for a project, well, that's exactly what you're gonna get. Part of my point was the maintenance issue is what makes so many projects available and for sale compared to good turnkeys that are not advertised, ":New engine, or rebuilt jet, etc.
