MSD advice

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone had advice as to my distributor/ ignition dilemma. The engine i recently bought has the MSD Pro Billet Flat Top distributor #84891 but no coil or ignition box. It's a nice unit but I don't need it for clearance, seeing I'm not running a blower and have no intentions of ever doing so. So my question is, Is it better to run a MSD ignition box like the MSD 6M-2L and a coil, like the HVC-2 #8253, or buy the MSD Marine, "ready to run"distributor #83606 and a coil. When you buy the ignition box and a bracket its more than the new Distributor, not to mention more wires and stuff cluttering up the engine. I would guess I could also sell the flat top and recover some of the money. Is there a performance advantage to running the box vs. the all-in-one? Thanks.

Fewer wires and connections to fail. Plus it would be slightly less expensive. Both good, but not worth it if the performance will suffer.

You are right in saying the RTR dist are a nice all in one package no box no addition wiring. Clean and simple however, they are limited just buy themselves. Depending on the box you go with, the power of your spark will increase, you may have options like Rev limiter, one or two step retard and or the ability to program for different set ups. $200-250 for a MSD 6al vs $350-400 for a RTR when you already have a good dist. Just a thought.

Not sure what you're thinking, but I personally would leave it alone.

The performance gains are so minimal from what you have to going to a box, the bang for the buck simply isn't there.

I'd compare it to buying a 600 hp car your going to drive in stop and go traffic. It's cool and all, but why?

If you had nothing, I'd say upgrade, but that looks so clean.

I think I have it figured out. MSD recommends the Marine ignition and the marine coil to go with my distributor. I think that's my direction. Teague makes a nice bracket.

Sounds like he already has a MSD dizzy; the one that requires a box but he has no box. Should he buy the box? Or should he scrap that idea and buy the ready to run dizzy because of the simpler install. Is the box really worth it for him?will he notice a difference?.... hope that helped.

If it was my motor I would see if the MSD digital 6 box is compatible with that distributor, if it is I would run that and a MSD coil. Its a good box with some good features over the marine box..

I agree with blender here, you really dont need all the marine crap. Plus the digital 6 is a much better box. A regular blaster 2 coil will do you just fine.
