Title: My Saturday, I know how to party....
Post by: GT Jets on April 14, 2012, 09:09:05 PM
Busy day today...

A new customer calls us about a month and a half ago and says "we have a fan with a little problem, can you come take a look?" Bear in mind this was on Presidents Day and we had it off, so this was an on call gig.

So my guy goes out there and I get this call, "Dude, this a 150HP main supply fan for a 10 story building and it literally had a bearing fail to the point that it welded the shaft to the pillow block"  :screwy:

I go out there to offer any help I can and we scrounge up a new bearing, cut the old one off with a grinder and a cut off wheel, clean things up the best we can and get them back up and running albeit temporarily....

I get them a quote for a more appropriate permanent repair which involved a new shaft, bearings and balancing of the whole ball of cheese...

We did it today...Two things; this fan was built in 1975, is on the roof of a 10 story building and has been repaired, let's just say, numerous time before, and the shaft had to be custom built and weighs in at a tick over 360 pounds... :o

Me and two of my best guys had the old shaft out before lunch and had her running by 5PM tonight.....

Pictures of the purdy new parts....

That nice shiney shaft weighs in at a mere 360 lbs., unfortunately so did the bent one we removed...

A couple shots of what we had to work with...

An idea of scale... :screwy:

That is a full grown mechanic, not an Oompa Loompa... ::)

Gonna go back tomorrow to balance it....

I bet that thing was making a little noise with the sheave wearing in to the bearing mount that far. I have worked in a few mines and it sucks when big equipment fails.

"Grease? You mean we have to grease these bearings? :o"

How tough was it to get that shaft out of that blower wheel?
Is that the only supply fan for that building?
