We were out in the Blythe area over the weekend and someone noticed smoke coming from the other side of a pontoon boat. When I looked over my boat was the only one over there so I kinda ran/swam as fast as I could over to it to splash it out. Some other people saw it too and came over to help splash it out. My buddy that was riding with me had his lighter in a little back pack with his smokes and a few other things and I guess it blew up and caught the seat on fire. No real damage other than the back of the seat and no one got hurt so it was nothing that a few more beers couldn't take of. I was sure scared for a little while until I saw that it was just the seat. Has anyone ever had this happen before?
Also, when I was towing my boat out there the rear cross member of my trailer broke at the light and was just about dragging on the ground. I was able to get it fixed for $150 when I could have fixed it at work for free. Despite my troubles I still had a good weekend.

Ummm yeah, but on a much larger scale.............

Lemme tell you, a butane lighter did not cause the fire. Those things explode and split in extreme heat and leak butane everywhere, but will not ignite themsleves! You REALLY need to check your boat out thoroughly, and TWICE!

Im with Ray on the lighter not causing it. Unless your boat was in the 300 degree range and had an ignition source, I would look at the boat and make sure all is well.
Make sure you dont have a leaking fuel line or even worse a leaking fuel tank, we have all seen what that can do, hence the picture above this post.
Glad you had a good weekend otherwise.
was the trailer something like this

I have seen this occur before...its the cheap plastic clear lighters that do it...someone had one sitting on beach towels in the front seat of my boat and she went off...chared a towel but no fire...I was standing right there...caught me off guard a little bit....

I have also seen a lighter explode and start a fire, sitting in a locked car on the dash :screwy:
if you aint smokin pot, you shouldn't be smokin :D

wow im really going to watch the lighters on the boat now, everybody smokes on my boat... maybe its time for a twelve volt ciggy lighter.....

Wasn't there a Mythbusters episode where they tried to simulate this?

Well I have my suspicions about the lighter. They guy did light a smoke and it was just a little after that it started on fire. I do have black seats and yes they get fawking hotter than a mofo. I didn't pick out the color but I guess now is a good reason to change it. We did catch it pretty quick so it isn't too bad and I think I can just use some black duct tape and throw a towel over it for now.
And about the trailer: I had the back of it strapped around the pump to the rear cross member since there are no hooks on the back of the boat. When the cross member gave way the boat was resting on the side of the trailer and the straps kept the cross member from touching the ground. It was about two inches away from the ground by the time I saw it.

I wouldn't do that either, my father damn near burned up a near new Explorer I had about 15 years ago with one of those when he dropped it! (Opened like 7 beers from the case we went and got and dumped it down the console on the passenger side to put it out!)
Those things are even more dangerous, lol.
PS, I'd bet his cherry blew off too and started this, not the lighter ;)
Steve, that is GREAT siggy line, lmao! >:D

Saw the myth buster's and don't think it was the lighter (awhile ago saw it think busted). Buddies cherry would be my guess as well.
With a friend we blew up his parents Bayliner Capri after refueling did not vent the engine compartment.
