Ya we have two sides to our shop, we have a stainless side for like commercial kitchens and what not, than we have the architectural side. All commercial/industrial. I think the union guys top out at like 35ish plus there benifits and pension and everything on top of that. And then for non union guys is really depends on skill level and the company u work for I guess. I would say anywhere from 30-40. Plus we do a lot of PW. So thats like 52.46 or somthing in sd county.

Did your separations class help you get your resume set up? There are so many career choices being a vet. I'm by no means trying to sound like a d-bag, but if you're looking for a "job" hit Home Depot... Now if your Looking for a career, Start sending that resume out brother. I'll be finishing my 8 years up in August and I have already applied to Operating Engineers, Electrician Union and gonna be setting up an account on BNSF's website. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I could only imagine how sketchy it was getting out after 8 years man. I'm nervous as all hell to start from the bottom again at 26 yrs old. Have you thought about going reserves?
I noticed you were a mechanic while active. Check out BNSF man, could definitley be a good career with excellent benefits. Again lmk if I can do anything to assist in your hunt.

If you received a disability rating of 30% or more, you can have VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION (VA) help you land a career...they also may help with living expenses, education, etc...
if your not collecting disability compensation and you feel like you WANT to (anything in your medical record can be claimed...sore back, tinnitus, etc) make a claim, feel free to PM me and I can give you sone pointers...example: im at 40% disability. 30% for anxiety and 10% tinnitus(ringing of the inner ear). I collect tax free just under $600 a month..its not alot but hey, its a car payment or a place diverter lol

San Bernardino and Los Angeles hiring right now. I.e. apply today!
-
River rat is right, use all of the benefits we have earned. If you haven't gotten rated start the process. It will take a long time to get thru the system but it will pay off later not only with a few extra bucks monthly but the VA healthcare system is pretty good and free! I am 70% from multiple deployments to Iraq as well as Afghanistan hence my screen name Brokedik, it's what we called all the old broken down soldiers who couldn't jump anymore (now I'm that guy). Lol
That being said I will get back to your question. First if you haven't already used your GI Bill use it. If you don't have a preference look into University of Phoenix. They have many locations and you only go to campus one night a week for 4 hours. That will get you 2k a month for three years and you can still search and work a day job. You will also look more enticing to future employers.
Second search USAJOBS daily. It has all of the government and state jobs listed every day. I own ,y own company and make a good living but if I had to do it all over that is what I would do. A federal job is the best. Funding almost never gets cut just reassigned, you will have the best benefit package around(it will become important later) and most of all it's usually easy work with good pay. The key to being successful with federal jobs is having a clean record and don't stop with the education until you have a masters degree. Having military experience is a huge plus and will get your foot in the door. Just don't give up, stay in school and milk the GI BILL for all you can.
I know it sounds crazy reading it saying get a masters but trust me its not that hard at Phoenix. I have earned my bachelors and now working on my masters all while raising a family and owning business with 10+ employees. The key is dedication and persistence just doing it one day at a time. Use the skills you have learned in the military to nail your interview. Think of it as a promotion board and you need to explain how you know not only how to give orders but take them as well.
Don't settle now as a civilian cause real life only gets harder. Push yourself to get a career that has good future. If you settle for a job that pays $17/hr as a machinist, in ten years you will be a $17/hr machinist with 3 kids to feed (no offense if anybody out there is a $17/hr machinist ;-/ ).
Anyway that's my .02. I have given this same advise to all of my soldiers and I have already been to 3 graduations with a BA and 2 who got there MBA. All of them (myself included) came from nothing and had nothing when we started. We also all got thru it with no student loans to repay which puts us a leg up on everyone else. The military got their use out of us, now it's our turn to get our use out of them!!!

Is a big deal if you don't have a cover letter on your resume page? And it says you can't apply for the same position til after 6 months
-
The cover letteris no big deal. The six month thing confuses people because they aren't clear. If you apply for a position, INTERVIEW, and get denied, then you cannot apply for the same position for six months. Any other condition you can apply as often as you want.

Thanks! I'll keep my fingers crossed still. I'm working now, just tired of phoenix and looking for a change. How's Barstow?
-
Wanting to move "back home" to So.Cal., I applied for the track repair maintenance position, in Pico Rivera.
But with the curve ball life has hit me with, even if they are interested in me I may have to pass on it. Although a "real" So.Cal. Job is been my goal since 1985.
Good luck to you with your search.
Ken
-
I put in for that one also. I would love to live in so cal because I am sick of the az heat and sun every freakin day. I can't move put there for a 10.00 an hour job so this would be awesome if I could get on board...lol
-

Barstow would be a down grade from pheonix
-
LOL! Well if I got on there you can always move up from there! Its close to the river though.
-
I think there were 2 or 3 openings on that track maintenance position? It would be cool for them to hire two "out of towners" willing to move, be maintenance noobies, and both have drag boats, to have fun in SoCal!! Ha ha!
-
Getting in is the big part. You can transfer after the first year.

Look into applying in the elevator union. We should be hiring a lot real shortly with all the high rises going up. Look up IUEC local 18. Also utilize the helmets to hard hats program. I used that program and got right in. Not sure how it works now. Starting pay for a helper is like 23-24 bucks and journeymen get 49 bucks. Great benifitS too.

74hondo is right about BNSF. If you don't get hired the first time don't give up, keep trying. I have been trying to get hired on for years. And my persistence has finally paid off. Recently got hired on in needles, CA for conductor. Good luck on your job search though.
For those that are interested...I know the city of bullhead city will be hiring in the roads dept for 3 full time positions very soon. Just keep an eye on their website for the openings. Kinda far away from you though.

ive never been to one for BNSF. But i wear the same thing to all ofthem. I wear a full on suit, slacks, button down shirt, tie, vest and jacket. Personally id rather not have someone who is stuck on appearance judge me because i didnt dress up to their standards. and for people who really dont care, you're above the standard
-
Dress shoes, slacks and a nice button up shirt is plenty. You will be interviewed by people who will be a co-worker, not just a manager. There are people who have been hired wearing jeans a t-shirt and tennis shoes. It's what you say in the interview that counts. It is all day thing usually but lately they have been making it shorter. Let them know you are from out of town and they will usually get you out faster. Just make sure you let them know you will be living close very soon. They don't like to hire distance. It will have a job overview and talk about the work and life style. Then a hair folicle drug test and an interview with a panel of usually three people.
-
Damn it, I feel bad for those that didn't get the BNSF move forward email. And unfortunately I DID receive one. Actually an Email, text mssg., and phone call, to go interview, but EXTREMELY RELUCTANTLY, with the life changing event of my little girl being diagnosed with Cancer, 4 days after I applied and took the online test, I hatefully have to pass on it.
I just can't imagine my wife and child up here in Washington, going thru what's happening, with me down there in L.A.!!! I can't imagine NOT being by my little girls side during this either.
Maybe with my having to pass, it will open up a slot for one of you guys trying and am able to proceed?
I just can't believe I've been trying to get a "real" job in So.Cal. For 20 some years, and I'm turning it down.
I hope it doesn't hurt my chances in the future when my little girl is all better.
Good luck guys, Ken

In my BNSF interview I wore dress shoes, slacks, long sleeve button up, and a tie. There were people there wearing full on business suits and there were people there just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I got the job. But I don't know if how I dressed had anything to do with it. Like 74hondo said....it's all about how you answer their questions. Their number one thing is safety. Be sure to mention safety in some way. They want someone that can be a part of their team. Not just an employee. At least that's how my interview made me feel. Good luck.

I went to interview and drug test in commerce yesterday. I think things went good now on to next stage. They talked about working so much you forget what day it is and your gone from home all the time off much so sounds like no time to go boating. Just have to wait and see what happens now. Pay and bennifits sound great.

Well I didn't make it past the interview. I guess my moving to socal will have to wait for now. I seen a few jobs out there but I can't move out there and make 10 bucks an hour. I'll have to keep trying

That sucks! Sorry man, but just keep at it, "the squeaky wheel, gets the grease", It took me 3 interviews to get the TIG job I have, and I knew 5 guys and a couple of supervisors there!!
-
Ya. Just gotta keep trying. At least I know what to expect for the next interview. They said I can't apply for that until 6 months. I will re do my resume and make a nice cover letter to add to it also. I'll be there one of these days soon. I was just bummed earlier because I just got the e mail.

Sorry to hear this man. The six months thing is only for the position you interviewed for. Just try to get in for any position and you can transfer after the first year.

Do u have any experience welding?

Just prepare to work away from home if you get on with bnsf. I've had to chase work all the way to nebraska and texas. Money is good though. Even better if you get the crew managers to pay for your travel expenses and lodging.

Keep watching Amtrak as well. About the same money but you're home more. Start of as an assistant conductor

The California department of corrections is hiring.. My brother has been in the dept. for 18 years and the pay and full benefits are great.. Start out pay is $3k(bring home) and that isn't including over time pay. 5% pay raise every 6 months for 6 years. The first 2 years you are in the apprenticeship program and after that is completed you get a $700 pay raise on top of the 5% raise. You top out in pay at 6 years( about $6k bring home)... Prior Military/ law enforcement is highly welcomed.
