Title: need advice for rebuild
Post by: jonnygarcia on February 11, 2013, 11:01:41 PM
Ok were almost ready to drop our cash on our 460 rebuild. I live in chino hills and im looking for a dependable honest shop. Not looking to be the fastest. Just basically want to keep it stock and reliable. It needs a COMPLETE rebuild. Ive been doing alot of research and have found it needs marine gaskets due to rusting caused by raw water. Also it needs bigger clearance between piston and cylinder.  I think crank bearings need more clearance also?? Is this all true??  Also it has stock pan with oil pick up up front, ive been told i can get away with leaving it like that. What kind of oil should i run? So basically i want to take it to someone who knows everything and specs etc.. not looking to spend alot. Hope someone can help! Thanks

not looking to spend alot.

Hate to hurt your feelings but its a boat. On average from what I, family and friends have spent on engine rebuilds over the years a for a good shop to to do the machine work and building its in the range from 1800-3000 depending on what is needed and involved. Don't cut corners on a boat motor because paddling against a current is damn near impossible. I know there's a few guys on the forum that do it for a living so you might get lucky and get one of them to do it for a decent price. My grandfather always and still does have a spare motor as do I, so maybe you could find a good running motor for sale and just stab it for now to buy some time rebuilding and that way you would always have a fresh motor on the stand.

As for a recommendation I don't have one, the guy my family's used retired 2 years ago and has no desire to work on engines anymore. Took me a month of begging and bribing to get him to tune the carb  on my chevelle.

So Good luck, do your homework and hopefully someone that can offer more assistance can chime in.

I see a contradictory statement here

I want to rebuild my motor and I don't want to spend alot doesn't work bud  :screwy:

I rebuilt my Chevy fairly recently. Yes to the piston to cylinder clearance, yes to ring gap, no to main bearing clearance. I was lucky in that I live near Teague Marine and when I bought my pistons & rings there Bob came out and gave me the exact specs to give my engine guy for what I was doing with my build. I had my short block put together and I did everything else. Saves serious cash if you're capable. Spend the money on a marine oil pan & pick up!

Whats wrong with the motor?
Maybe it just needs a refresh, rings, bearings, etc..
No way to tell until its apart.
front sump needs to go for reliability.
Marine tolerances? thats an arguement right there.

that all I got

i dont know where to tell you to take your engine, but i can give you my 2 cents. take it for whats its forth. dont look for cheap!  it will burn you in the ass! if
all you want is just a nice basic 460  buy it new! or a reman from a reputable house ( ie summit , paw jegs) no hassle just put in!  and you get a good warranty!good luck!!!

enginedoctor, obnoxious001, andLakes Only are guys here on the boards that build engines.

enginedoctor - A and D engines is in La Habra http://mjmnetwork.com/aanddengines/ (http://mjmnetwork.com/aanddengines/)

obnoxious001 - Barry , is in Glendora. I think he's a chevy guy

LakesOnly- is up in central Cal I think, but is all about Fords.  http://www.highflowdynamics.com/ (http://www.highflowdynamics.com/)

Ralph Brunt is also a Ford motor head.

If you don't get too many responses in the thread, maybe PM one of these guys.

we took it apart last year after it blew. guy had a after market dip stick that read full at 2 or 3 quarts... i guess he was blind? but also my fault for buying a used boat and not changing the oil..  whole engine grenaded pretty much.. need ALL new parts and crank machined.

and ya (obnoxious001 - Barry) contacted me yesterday and we spoke for about 45 min about my situation, he defiantly gave some good solid advice.

Also it has stock pan with oil pick up up front,

Is this a stock auto/truck pan (5/6 quarts)? Most jets would run a higher capacity pan like 10 quart.

It might be something to look into if you don't have one already.

i have a guy up here in ridgecrest. I dont see a rebuild costing more than 1500$. at least that is the price i usually pay. My guy is good with jet boat motors and he stands by his work. He usually comes over to my house when i am doing a break in so that he can see whats going on. and if anything fails he takes care of it for me.

I live in ridgecrest though. No one ever comes up here to visit. lol. and i kind of like it that way.

Ya my buddy is a sheet metal worker. .So im gonna have him turn my stock pan into a 9 or 10 qt. Then order  milodon 18482 marine oil pick up from jegs for 84 bucks. Hopefully is works!

Careful. People a lot smarter than you and I have developed high capacity, high performance oil pans and still screw it up on occasion.

Would rather see you drop a little coin on a good used pan.

FWIW.

Yup.  I'd suggest a B&B Pan from Rex Marine as best bang for the buck in a pan that works.

I'd highly recommend spending the money for a good jet boat pan.

If you search "Milodon" you should find several threads about problems people have had with oil pans on Fords.

If you can find a used Armondo's oil pan buy it.  You won't find a better pan.

Check RacingJunk.com and some of the bidding sites to see if you can get lucky enough to find one.

I'd be on that, but I've got to be honest, I've had great luck with Milodon Pans. Even on the 460's I've run, and my Olds runs basically the same pan.

I've seen, and argued, the Milodon 460 problems from those on the site and others, and I'm left to beleive that these cases were running factory style front or center pickup tubes and not the Milodon rear sump pickup tube and proper oil pump in these Jet applications.

No one has shown me they were using the proper pump/pickup combination (Including relocating a main bolt) with the appropriate pan and experienced a failure or oil pressure loss in a Jet Boat engine application.

That being said, and us Ford guys will argue that to death and there are many of us that share my viewpoint, I would NOT hesitate on a Milodon on the Olds.

Odds of finding a good, used Armando's? Nil. Probably the same for a Milodon or a Canton, or an Olsen, or a Dooley. And if you DO, probably more than retail compared to what's out there.

Just my .02

All try points ray, all that consider I personally am going with a new Armandos pan and a kasse oil pump. This for a Ford, but all the motor work better with the best oiling stuff you can afford.
