Title: Need one of these...
Post by: GeneralLee on June 14, 2014, 04:59:21 PM
Finally took my steering apart this weekend. Thought I could just slap another rack and pinion type steering in but I was wrong...does anybody know wtf this is? Can I convert to another type of setup? Does anybody have a working one sitting around. The cable is frozen up can't get it to free up.

Old Mercury Ride Guide... Obsolete as an ambitious 16 year old.   :sly:

Do yourself a solid and just buy the complete kit.

Should cost about a buck and a half.

Teleflex "The Rack"..

Problem is I have the the rack sitting in the garage and nothing fits. My hole on for the old steering setup on my dash is too big. The teleflex falls right through...is there some type of adapter? Do I have to glass my whole dash and cut a new hole?

Not to mention boat is a t deck I have a column extension on it which I didn't see teleflex carrying.

The bracket for the Teleflex should be larger than the old Merc.

You will have to buy a different extension. They don't make that cable anymore. As far as I know anyway.

The bracket is smaller unfortunately. If it was larger I'd just drill some new holes in the dash and call it a life.

Damn looks to me like I'll have to fab something up to adapt the teleflex system to my dash without having to glass the whole thing and cutting and painting. I'll post some more pics of the 2 setups next to each other tomorrow.

That's the problem it won't just go over the original hole brother. It pretty much almost falls through. I'd say the diameter of the teleflex is about an inch short.

What's the length of your cable?

Way too long hehe I'd say 16 ft. It was bent in numerous places that's why I think the cable froze up...The Rack and pinion itself is fine. The cable got stuck somewhere. Tried freing it up and it was a no go...i need like a 14ft and up
