« on: September 04, 2009, 06:46:55 PM »
I never talk bad about anyone....but.

My mom has an 88' Toyota pickup...still like new that I bought 4 her. (by the way she is 70 yrs.old)

She tells me it is smoking alot & wont move   ???

I look at it  and what happenned is she blew a 3/8 6 inch trans line...lost all fluid.

I said can't cost more than $30 labor/ hose /clamps....... Sooooooo she takes it to this place

called John's Automotive Repair in Whittier for fix.... Here is what they did  :banghead:

1. $ 18.00 for line
2. $55.00 to R & R line and clamps
3. $ 16. for 2  clamps
4. $ 65.00 to press. wash engine compartment
5.  $ 30.00 for 5 quarts of trans fluid.

Total  $  184.00 plus tx.

She picks up truck ... she breaks down....they shorted out charging system   :sly:

Anyhow I went down there and physically took care of bus. with managment.

What would u have done   ??? ???

Had a similar thing happen about 15 years ago with my mom and her Older caddy, Dave.  Went in for brake checkup and an alignment, next thing is the exhaust is f-d up (They grabbed it with a huge pair of water pump pliers and ruined the pipes and mufflers in the process, that'was how they "tested" them). Among other things they replaced.

My mother goes to pick up her car and they say "$1650" or something like that. Calls me in tears. I drove an hour and a half from Ohio to PA to confront this shop, and here the shop manager was a guy I went to high school with, and shoulda known my Mom.

Pipes and mufflers they destroyed were fine, as far as I could tell once they finally let me see them, brakes were OK as well, really didn't need them yet, or new rotors, wheel bearings, all the crap they threw on there. Ball joints, tie rod ends, etc were all fine to me. (Took me an hour to get them to ressurrect the old parts for me to inspect, and here they didn't change out the ball joints at all anyway, even though it was on the bill)

The guy ended up not charging my mom a nickel for anything, as when he was talking with his District manager, I was in the lobby telling people to get their cars out of this shop like NOW, or they'll be ripped off too. And they were.

I still see him from time to time when I travel back east, but he avoids me. Always thought maybe I was too rough on the guy, but hey, that was robbery as far as i was concerned. These chain shops are rediculous. Find a mechanic you trust, independant, and go from there. Support local business I say.

Ya...  A holes all the way.

That is why I don't refer customers to R & R shops.

We used to do that 12 yrs. ago... and customers still call me about that kinda work...but I cannot trust these shops.

So people  yank their engines out and bring them to us on there own....Sad

Most of you dont know that before I put on the JBP hat 15 years ago I put on average 90 k miles a year for 6 years on the car running from one end of the state to the other inspecting and reporting on warranty and insurance and legal automotive mechanical related claims (about 20k of these under my belt) I'm a qualified automotive expert witness in 5 Cali municpal jurisdictions I still own and operate and direct that company with 13 statewide inspectors covering now close to  80% of Cali . I personally still work locally as an "outsource" contractor for one of the "big three" on thier Dealer Tech program visiting dealers locally weekly . Before JBP I worked for Toyota,Mitsubishi , GM ,Ford Chrysler, Nissan and BMW as a Tech ,Service manager and Warranty Administrator If anyone from this board ever needs help on auto truck and RV related issues or a situation like above dont hesitate to call happy to help ! I borrowed my freinds big ass 1 ton dually several years ago, it had a trans cooler line leak and was smoking because it was dripping on the exhaust crossover.

So I'm in friggen Santa Flippin Rosa and it's Friday at 4PM  :banghead:

So i whip in to this shop and ask the dude if I can buy a hose clam and some hose.

The guy says "I don't sell parts, I only do repairs", so I say "fair enough, what do you charge?"

The guy tells me one hour minimum and the parts (1 foot of hydraulic hose, two quarts of ATF and two 720*hose clamps) it will cost me $98... :screwy: , so I'm stuck, I give the guy $100 and he fixes the truck. I start the engine to leave and the hose blows off because the dude is an idiot and it blows 3 quarts of trans fluid all over the shop floor and the driveway, the truck was only in gear for five seconds...

That right there is Karma my freinds, and yes, I was smiling when I drove off after I showed him how to fix it....He gave $50 back...
